2017 Recruiting Class Thread....

Look at Andersons Hudl tape.. The kid is a head hunter to will drive u to the ground, and continue to drag you across the turf if he could.. Definitely has a mean streak which you cant really coach.. He is on the light size 6'3 270(according to rivals) 280(according to other sites) nothing a college weight and nutrition program cant fix. He may be 3* due to him not being a instant factor on campus.. He will probably need to red shirt and get his weight and strength up

The odd thing though is that everyone has probably seen Anderson's tape - from Indiana all the way to florida at least. And most programs understand that guys need to bulk up. I'm not trying to crash on our commit, just saying that there must be some variable which makes him a lower 3* and has kept big-name programs other than UNC from offering him.

What's the latest on DT Gill from WF High School..Are we looking good with any DT at all...

FSU has been after Billy Ross.
Yes. FSU knows high quality, even when it is not 5 or high 4 star rated.

That FSU is after him does not mean he has ruled out UNC. Far from it. We are the leader for Ross. Part of that, compared to FSU, is location. It will be very easy for Ross' family and friends to drive to Chapel Hill to see him play, as well as to see every other year Away games at Pitt, UVA, VT, Dook, and MooU. Part of the reason we are the leader for Ross is the staff. He knows he can shine on the OL with Fed's offense, and he likes Kapilovic. And any guy on the OL is going to take special notice when the OL coach becomes OC.

I think we are in pretty good shape to land Ross.

Who knows.. He could be one of those guys who is just now gaining steam ..He claims 31 offers.. Some of those include Big 10: Indiana, Big 12: Iowa Sate, ACC: Wake Forest, Syracuse,(UNC) and also East Carolina, Cincinnati, Memphis.

I wouldn't waste my time picking apart a 3* ranking in June.. As we know, rivals like to re rank after the summer evaluations and camps are done, and then again after the season.. I trust coach Kapilovic and who he signs off on. Also, Don't be surprised if he starts getting more offers after once recruiting boards get thin.

Just for informational Purposes

Anderson right now is a 3* 5.5 prospect

This is how rivals justifies their rankings

A five-star prospect is considered to be one of the nation's top 25-30 players, four star is a top 250-300 or so player, three-stars is a top 750 level player, two stars means the player is a mid-major prospect and one star means the player is not ranked.

Rivals also assigns each player a number in their evaluation. Here's what they mean.

  • 6.1 Franchise Player; considered one of the elite prospects in the country, generally among the nation's top 25 players overall; deemed to have excellent pro potential; high-major prospect

  • 6.0-5.8 All-American Candidate; high-major prospect; considered one of the nation's top 300 prospects; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team

  • 5.7-5.5 All-Region Selection; considered among the region's top prospects and among the top 750 or so prospects in the country; high-to-mid-major prospect; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team

  • 5.4-5.0 Division I prospect; considered a mid-major prospect; deemed to have limited pro potential but definite Division I prospect; may be more of a role player

  • 4.9 Sleeper; no Rivals.com expert knew much, if anything, about this player; a prospect that only a college coach really knew about

I think the staff has known for a while that Gill has little if any interest in UNC.
247 does not show him as warm for anybody. Is he just keeping it close to the vest? The only DT's that we seem to have any involvement with are Jaylen Twyman who visited with Nathan Proctor and Alec Jackson 6'5" 270 listed as warm .

Foster has eliminated us but has Kensucky in his top 8. The other 7 are legit FB teams , but freakin' azz Kensucky for football? He must have taken some real shots to the head last year.
I saw that. Not sure what that's all about but Just has a 4.2 GPA and has intentions on being an engineer. He's a smart young man and a great kid. There is a great article in the Charlotte Observer about him. At 6'5" tall and 255 pounds he'll go wherever he was to go. I'm a Heel fan. I'd love to see some of these kids from the Western part of the State get interested in the Tar Heel program. Problem to me is that if it's past Charlotte they're not all that interested most times until it's too late. Cleveland County is big time. Jonathan Bullard just became a millionaire Brandon Spikes (I know, I know) and many more. Look at the kids that went to college the last two years from Crest. Shelby is seven miles away and they stay loaded. Justin will not go to Kentucky. He is going to go where they won't encourage him to change his major.

With McCargo being told to start practicing for Center, I don't mind them choosing someone like Anderson a ton. But when you have a guy with no questions (a 4 star) versus a guy with something questionable (a 3 star guy), it is hard to argue with the 4.

Hopefully the rest of the OL class is studs. Billy Ross is super close to committing.

We've had a little bad luck with OL every yr
-Jarrod James
- next graduating class lost JJ Patterson & Will Dancy
- two classes later Jared Cohen, Caleb Tillman

How do you know the 4 star has 'no questions? Are not some 4 stars overrated, some of them terribly overrated? It seems to me that is more true on the OL than anywhere else. When the FSU O-line went way down, starting in 2001, it had a 2 deep of something like two 5 stars and eight 4 stars. And much of the year it looked like a gaggle of slow, dump, lazy 2 and mid-tier 3 stars.

Even if it is not public knowledge, aren't there 4 stars with character issues? Grades? Drugs? Rumors of manhandling girls? Close family members and/or friends in murderous drug gangs?

To put this in an area of current need: I would much rather have signed the high character mid-range 3 star DT than another Marvin Austin.

Coachability, speed, frame and size potential, strength, skills, instincts, attitude, competitiveness, etc are the main things these 4 main scouting services review via film and camps.

When guys are amazing in all of the above they get 5 stars.
When they are solid in all areas but not amazing they get 4.
When there is one thing missing or questionable (like too small, too slow, bad hands, horrible technique, low motor, etc) they get 3 stars.
Obviously if they had too many questions they'd be 2 star or unranked.

If there isn't much film or camping and guys are under the radar they could be misranked. Of course there are bumps when elite schools make an offer.

Anderson has a bunch of offers, he obviously isn't flying under the radar. High character wasn't somehow apparent to our coaches alone. There is obviously something missing in him compared to 4* centers and guards in the southeast.

I trust the coaches. I'm guessing that sometimes the coaches are having to 'settle for less' when they just don't get traction with big-dawgs.

Recruiting services have gotten better every yr at ranking kids (due to all the media and camps). To ignore the rankings is silly.

This kinda sounds like a "stars mean nothing" response. If that is your feeling, let's start a new thread on this matter.

And not just with our OL but our DL as well. We need that to change. Would love to get a commitment from Ross in the near future!

And wouldn't it be nice to have a guy of Lawrence Taylor's ability roaming the field on defense again? We desperately need some bad arse defensive linemen and linebackers(my favorite position in football) to sign up.

OT Jerry Drake Jr. 6'6" 323 was at the freak show and is now listed as warm for UNC as well as Joshua Fedd-Jackson 6'3.5" OG now listed as warmer for UNC. Billy Ross says we are his leader.

He was there.
Yeah I went back and looked at 247's time line and it showed him there but it was so devoid of entries that I couldn't tell if it was this year's or last year's. His time line/visits etc. show's very little activity for a major prospect. Anybody know what's up with him?

Does 247 just not charge for any of their info? Seems like a bold business strategy.

Oh yes they charge for VIP articles with the most detailed info/rumors. They do have a nice amount of free content. I really like the player time lines so you can see upcoming visits etc. If you go to select your team they also have team time lines so you can see upcoming visits.

Marcus McKethan Is the newest guy on board....6'5 328lbs....I see he is not ranked but showed out at the Freak Show...Any chance he moves to the DL...
With that size, I would love to see that guy squatting over our opponent's centers. But I assume he got the offer from showing at the Freak Show on the OL.

Then again, that doe snot mean that coaches did not see him and think that he could make a move to the DL> I've said before that we might not get a 2nd DT in this class, even with the need, unless we sign a guy all or most see on the OL and plan to make him a DT.

That's what I was thinking. He likes Kap and so he's coming here to be an O-lineman but his frame, athleticism, etc,....sure make him look like a great D-line candidate to me.

I am sure he'll do well either way if he listens and learns from the coaches. He seems to have the raw talent in terms of size (looks all muscle), speed, movement (pulls well in the scouting video), etc,....Kind of surprised he's not rated.

Haven't seen anywhere that shows he has any offers besides the MooU. Have only seen that SoCar and a couple other have shown interest.

Not having many offers is generally a negative but look at the guy's size, speed and mobility. He also plays basketball. Not sure why no one has noticed but with the right coaching and development, this looks like a great future player and NFL bound. You just don't see those combinations every day.

Read the comments under the 247 article. He hasn't been to any camps and evaluators aren't traveling to Barnwell. He should get noticed now with a power 5 commitment.

Very impressed with this guy's size, strength, and reach. Appears to have quick feet as well, always a good thing for a lineman. We may have just stolen one guys.

Jeremiah Gemmel LB from Ga is the newest commit....24/7 is saying that we are done at LB for this cycle...Reports are the kid can play inside or outside...

Okay went and looked at this kids JR Highlights on Hudl....He will be a impact player on special teams off the bat...He blocked 3 punts and a xp also would have blocked a fg but the holder lost the ball and he lit him up....Fast s the word bird...If he was playing Football in NC he would be a 4 star and in the Top 20 in the State...Good God Ga is deep with players....

That's 3 out of GA in this class already...I like it also..We landed 5 last year...The State is rich and UNC might as well open that pipeline...Any DT in GA...We got PT.....
