Any Changes Coming for the Carolina Coaching Staff?

What Would Jesus Do?

As this disappointing season wound down, UNC faced this dilemma:

1. Do we throw money at building a better roster...

2. Or do we throw money at improving our coaching situation...

3. Or both?

Apparently we chose #1 - not #3.

But even though Hubert's job is secure, does that mean the entire coaching staff is returning?

As a mere fan, I don't know enough about Hubert's assistants to know their roles or to judge who should stay or go. So I'm looking for input on that.

Proper order if this was a professionally managed organization:

1. Replace Bubba Cunningham as Director of Athletics for retaining HD and unjustifiably extending the contract of HD, who is not even a top 10 or arguably top 20 basketball head coach.
2. Make sure our NIL funds will support our mission to be a top 10 program.
3. Hire a top 10 basketball head coach (UNC connection not required), who would hire a top 10 team of assistants (we do not currently have elite assistants).
4. Then pay top dollar for talented players.

For most of his time here, it's seemed to me that Hubert is good at some of the things a head coach needs to be good at. Recruiting and halftime adjustments, for example. Sure the recruiting thing got dinged this time, but many think more money will restore UNC on that front.

Other things have been less impressive. Pregame prep, for example. Assuming that's what's behind so many slow starts. Roster construction and flexibility, for another. It shouldn't take 2/3 of the season to figure out your starters.

No coach can be good at everything. But the coaching staff in its entirety needs to be good at everything - if it wants to be a top program. Which is to say that it makes sense to fill the holes with assistants who excel where Hubert doesn't. It's not clear that our current staff lives up to that expectation.

I’ve had season tickets for over 20 years and I’m seriously considering not continuing. The survey sent out about the new arena with ticket prices, increased Ram’s Club fees and now having to fund a NIL (not the original intent of NIL) is a big turnoff.
I gave up my season tickets years ago, but that was mostly because of the commute costs from Commifornia...😁😆

I have asked numerous times this year on the premium board about why the asst coaches seemed to be getting a pass and all of the blame on Hubert. Does anyone know how our asst coaches are generally regarded? they are all former players that we all loved but what about coaching? I know we never hear about any of them being in the running for a HC position so that may be telling us something.

I feel like we can apply many of the lessons from the football team constantly changing assistants but having zero impact on the real issues.

I honestly don’t think Hubert listens to the assistant coaches

If that's true, he is very shortsighted as a leader. I have assumed they all have areas of expertise, i.e. Sean May working with bigs, Marcus and Lebo working with shooting mechanics, etc. I have heard that Marcus in particular had taken Eliot under his arm.

I have been saying this for a long time, and have been criticized for it. But it has been obvious to me. The assistants may not be the greatest cast ever assembled but they aren't dummies either. I have seen their frustration during games and at other times. I have Sean talking directly to players at times (not sure how that went over with Hubert). I've heard a lot about Hubert's stubbornness, and I really do think that not listening enough to his assistants has contributed to problems.

I have a vivid image during one game of Hubert yelling at an assistant. The camera was overhead facing Hubert, so I couldn't be sure which bald dome was arguing back. If I had to guess, it was Brad. It was very intense - judging from the extreme hostility on Hubert's face - and went on a bit.

Reminded me of that photo of Roy screaming at Tokoto. Disturbing.

I’ve saw Sean look so dejected on the sideline… at the start of the Clemson game like “ damn Hubert, we all told you start withers at the 4”

I said this past year that I don't understand the process of how Hubert put together his staff. I mean, I get it that they all had to be UNC guys. But if Hubert wanted to implement certain ideas (like smaller ball), then why would you have assistants that don't have any experience on that. I didn't follow Jeff Lebo's career so I can't say for him. But the rest of the guys on the bench basically played for Roy so they certainly weren't coached that way and none of them had bench experience with coaches that played the way Hubert looked like he wanted to play for the last few years.

That's where I question the logic of it. If he wanted to play 3 players who were 6'3" and under, then I think he should've tried to get a former player who played under that system or gotten a coach from another program that coached under that system. I don't know the relationship between Hubert and his assistants and I don't know how much influence the assistants have. But the way the staff was put together was odd to me. Basically the only requirement was to play at UNC.

We'll end up seeing how good the staff is. If they're perceived as good assistants, a program will hire them to be a head coach. Those days are probably over for Jeff Lebro. But if Sean May or Marcus Paige are viewed strongly enough, they'll get a head coaching job with one of the 350 teams in the country. It would honestly be a bad sign if Hubert goes 0'fer with his assistants becoming head coaches.

@gary-7 if one of the assistants had to be interim for a season who would you choose? I always expected Marcus to end up on the bench and said so on this forum at the end of his run at UNC but have no idea who has shown chops among the group. That’s not even getting to how much the job has changed in the last couple years.

Boy oh boy, is that a telling question to be posing, huh?
Actually, I think I even answered it earlier this season. I'd sit them down and ask which one is willing and able to teach what he was taught when he played here and not reinvent the damn wheel.
