I actually thought about starting a thread on this the other day. People say all the time that the book is "better" than the movie and I'm not sure I agree. They're two totally different mediums that each offer their own pros and cons.This is generally a good life rule.
For example, I love The Lord of the Rings books and movies but in completely different ways. The former sparks my imagination while the latter is more pleasing to my senses. I think the problem is that the book (almost?) always precedes the movie, so if the movie fails to capture the essence of the book it's considered a failure. Almost by default, movies can't offer the same degree of detail because they pull you forward in time before you're able to fully appreciate things at the same pace as in a book.
