At the Movies

This is generally a good life rule.
I actually thought about starting a thread on this the other day. People say all the time that the book is "better" than the movie and I'm not sure I agree. They're two totally different mediums that each offer their own pros and cons.

For example, I love The Lord of the Rings books and movies but in completely different ways. The former sparks my imagination while the latter is more pleasing to my senses. I think the problem is that the book (almost?) always precedes the movie, so if the movie fails to capture the essence of the book it's considered a failure. Almost by default, movies can't offer the same degree of detail because they pull you forward in time before you're able to fully appreciate things at the same pace as in a book.

I can't remember if it was discussed in this thread, but I thought The Greatest Showman was a decent movie. I'm not a musical kinda guy, but I think you can keep your man card and watch this movie.

I waited for wolverine to appear the whole movie

I mostly agree. I just think a book can take you to places that a movie can't get you in terms of storytelling. But the same is obviously true in reverse for movies and pleasing the senses like you said.

I think it depends on the book and the movie. For instance, I would say Jaws is a better movie than book. But as it has been pointed out already, they are different media with different pros and cons. Filmmakers are often limited with the run time of a movie for example, so they have to cut/condense things that the authors don't have to worry about. Sometimes that works in a movie's favor over the book, sometimes it makes a stronger argument for the book.

I'd just like to point out that I never understood the characters of Merry and Pippin from LOTR until I read the book and figured out they were high AF constantly.

Did any of you guys check out A Quiet Place last weekend? I saw it, and horror isn't necessarily my go-to genre, but I thought it was great. It's more tense than anything else, but it's got some great performances and it's a pretty unique idea, so even if horror isn't your typical thing, I'd say check this one out.

Going to see it tonight. Movie Tavern-style theaters aren't my thing, but I'm intentionally going to the Movie Tavern near me instead of my regular mom-and-pop theater because Movie Tavern prices out the riff raff.

And by riff raff I mean teens who will come to a movie on Friday night and talk during the whole thing and ruin the movie. It's a pet peeve for sure. I'm the narc who will not hesitate one second to go grab the cop poasted up front and get him to escort out someone who's talking overly loudly and just not even pretending to watch the movie.

And I know A Quiet Place has long silent parts in it, so people talking is not gonna fly with me. I saw the first Paranormal Activity at Southpoint Mall (sp) in Durham and some of the... clientele talked a ton and giggled and sh*t during that movie and about ruined the whole experience for me, since the 'effect' of that movie hinges a lot on silence and building the tension.

When I went to see it there was a slight amount of talking in the theater right at the beginning but I think from about 5 minutes in, everyone was kind of scared to make a sound or cough

LOL. My workout mix would scare the average person. Lots of old A7x, old Atreyu, KoRn, Every Time I Die, Norma Jean, etc.
I think that's the first time I've heard of In Flames. I'll have to check them out a little more when I get home. I've been on an acoustic kick lately, so it will be a nice change of pace.

Oh,.for real? On hearing of In Flames I mean. They're your typical heavy/goth metal band from Scandinavia, but they stay away from the demonic stuff.

"The Quiet Place" is them probably them at their most melodic, but it still has parts that hit hard. Some other songs I like by them are:

Discover Me Like Emptiness
Take This Life (very heavy)
Cloud Connected
Only for the Weak

Also, just looking them up since I haven't listened to them regularly in a decade, they have 3 new albums since 2010. Who knew? Lol. Cannot say if any are any good. They're one of those bands where I just listen to specific few songs, not full albums.
