Bigs

1 guy in 13 years is pretty lousy.
So is your theory that Roy doesn't recruit NY hard enough or that we've simply lost our connections there? I'd go with the latter.

As for NY players, I remember Jimmy Black, Brian Reese, King Rice, and Derrick Phelps off the top of my head.

Roy didn't get here til 2003.
And our NY connection has been selective and productive when it's happened. Dean always seemed to have a couple --- Jimmy Black, Sam Perkins, Doherty, Kenny The Jet (and he tried like hell to get "Little Kenny" Anderson), King Rice, Phelps/Reese, et al.
I think Roy early on relied on his KU network and went midwest/west a lot more than Dean to supplement the closer kids. It's good to see him go to NY and get Platek and going after Bamba and showing his face more in that part of the country.

As far as I'm aware, a scholarship was never confirmed to Mitchell Robinson. Again, we only report what we can confirm and no one on staff here was ever able to confirm.

I don't even recall very many visiting in the last 10 years and I am talking about top 30 type players.

I'd love to see us have a little more of a presence in that area, Gary. We've gotten some very good ones from there.

Agree, I'm going with the latter. Some of the top coaches at the top programs don't have relationships with our staff. It can easily be fixed and it seems as though Roy is making headway in doing just that.

I agree. And don't forget that Roy spent many years in Kansas where his recruiting footprint included signing many kids from California, a recruiting hotbed, something that just isn't going to happen at UNC.

...and we should be thankful for Roy's midwest ties. While I think his last experience in Cali soured him a bit on that, Psycho, Marcus and friends have been very good to us from the heartland.

Another thing is Roy has expanded southward more than Dean did --- which of course matches the nation's demographics and is becoming very fertile. I'm elated the staff spends so much time down here in my neck o the woods, and they've done some real damage in Florida.

More than 1 in 13 years. I'm not blaming anyone, just stating a fact that we haven't landed players in what is a hot bed of talent and it's frustrating.

I do agree with you that we could use some of those tuff NYC kids.

Yep. Between JB and Tony we've snatched two of their best players.

Hopefully we can continue it with some of the kids at IMG and Monteverde in the 18 and 19 classes.

Yep, Dean pulling Vince Carter was HUGE. Vinsanity is still worshiped by a lotta FL HS kids, and Roy getting Henson was a helluva recent in-road as well.

The Stokes recruitment seems to be under the radar(no pun intended) , other than the Crystal Ball which seems to have merged football and basketball picks there just doesn't seem to be anything out there. I can't even figure out if he is 235 lbs or 285 lbs.

He's right at 250lbs. Told me himself. I genuinely don't think he's as far along in the process because he's still trying to get adjusted to life at IMG. He may not get to his visits until later in the process but once he starts things may develop quickly.

I saw on another site that Roy and Steve met with Stokes on Tuesday. He has 4 officials set (Tenn , ISU , UF and TCU) and UNC is hoping for the 5th.

Realllly want Stokes. Haven't wanted a recruit as bad as him since Berry. Like what I see from him.
Wouldn't go that far, but yes, would be really happy if Roy landed him.
Zion on the other hand..... I would be super pumped if he became a Heel.

Totally agree!

Zion, yeah, the real deal there! IMO he is a game changing wing and will be totally jacked if he comes to us!

Roy always has one or two to sniff about, ya never know, could be a diamond in the rough...just sayin'... I sure would take two of the three we're on but this sure seems to be the "insurance" kid...

Yes 3 on rivals and scout , 0 on 247 and not on ESPN data base. I am sure ESPN and 247 will rate him now that he is being mentioned with UNC.

At least the kid has size which is nice. Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling though that we're going after 0 (or 3?) star kids. Can't imagine it sends a good message to elite recruits either.

Message? What, that Roy isn't going to wait forever on specific needs? Sure we communicate to the kids that are "elite" (would that be Bamba) that we may hold a spot but we sure do not intend to wait too long. Come on in or not. We have other kids, their interests and ours to look after....

I know how you feel Jericho. We've wiffed on so many top players the last few years it would be easy to accept that as how it will always be.
I think PJ is our most important potential recruit as far as keeping us competitive on the court next year but Knox might be more valuable in the long run for creating a compatible atmosphere for future top 10 kids (OADs). Should we get both......well that's a game changer, right?
Keep the faith! We can take a couple of these bigs now, assure them of the PT they will need to develop and have scholarships and PT for both PJ and Kevin.
Now that's being a lot more optimistic than recent history might support but I've seen hard times before even during the Coach Smith era, and the cream has always risen back to the top (thinking of you Woody).

Over Knox and PJ yes. Don't know about Zion.

I am thinking that this comment is more reflective of a lack of desire for us to get in to the one & done movement than it is a comment of Stokes being a better player than either Knox or PJ.

I don't agree with your position on Knox and/or PJ, I would love for us to get some one & done talents, I just don't want to see us load up with 4 and 5 of them and see veteran players become marginalized. I would love to have both PJ and Knox, I just don't want to see us basically have recreate our team each and every year and I do like players that stay for a while that we can see grow and develop, not just as players but as young men.

Kid has had catastrophic leg injuries (think Paul George) that shut him down for extended periods, but was a fast-riser as a frosh/soph. WVU and others stayed on him and Indiana is getting involved. Just showed up on Roy's radar because I think he is a Carolina fan and someone reached out to the program about him as I understand it. Dunno if it will amount to anything, but Roy's going to check him out.
