Did anybody see this on Richt?

why was richt interested in leaving georgia? it seems like a sweet job with one of the top recruiting states in the country. were the fans at georgia fed up with his lack of conference titles and his losing record in 2010?

Before he went to Georgia.

Dick was the worst AD in the history of college sports...He was Bball only and he couldn't even get that right...Glad he is gone...Just look at the mess he left Bubba to deal with....

This was was he was a coordinator at Florida State.

Yep and guess who hand-picked him? :(

But yeah I'll always be furious at DB for his Bunting hire. That set UNC Football back 10 years, and that's without even including the impact of the subsequent sanctions. It's kind of a small miracle we aren't a perennial 4-win program right now, that we aren't a Kansas.

Richt is a class act. Georgia's gain was our loss. They have always been my favorite SEC team mainly going back to the years when we had Bill and they had Vince Dooley as our head coaches.

In my opinion, all this crap started way back when Mack left for Texas. UNC should have hired another high profile coach to fill the void left by Brown. Instead they chose to do the ole "Promote the DC" move. That one doesn't work out very often. THEN the John Bunting debacle set us back 10 years. You have a program hitting on all eight you don't regress by hiring unknowns. If they were willing to throw that money Mack's way they should have been willing to pony up for a proven head coach. When they announced JB as the new head coach, a lot of folks, like myself said "Who?" We were on our way back to having the talent level of the Mack Brown era when the whole scandal thing hit and Butch was fired. I think UNC football is cursed and while my blood will always be Carolina Blue, I have given up hope of ever seeing them be a perennial football power. The fan base is jaded and has been burned for so long. We only need look at that bright shining aluminum in Kenan on Saturdays to prove it. It sucks. But it is what it is. At least most games are on TV now.

So much truth to this it is sad.

It only takes a couple of great players to make a program a lot better...a Peppers is worth a few games. NC State did well when Russel Wilson was QB as did BC when Matt Ryan was QB, as did Marshall with Moss.

It is getting a few of those great players....

Oh I know who hand picked him...But I will leave that alone because for some he is the greatest thing to ever walk the earth...Don't forget Dick told Mack that the Football coach would never make more than the Bball coach at UNC...The whole thing when Mack left was just a complete mess...From naming Torbush head coach to hiring That jerk Bunting a few years later...It was almost like UNC was saying hold up football you are getting to big....So sad...Thus is the life for a UNC fan that cares just as much about the football program as the Bball program....

If that fool Baddour had hired Richt, who knew the ACC inside and out and was the most sought after OC in the country for the next HC, Richt;s 1st UNC team would have been 2001, with Peppers. I said before the season that that team should be 9-3 - Bunting was 7-5. Richt I think would have delivered 9-3, and he would have hit the ground red hot in recruiting. And ACC football would not have gone into a decade long funk. Richt's emergence at UNC would have forced Bowden to retire earlier at FSU. And it would have forced Miami to not hire the mentally challenged Randy Shannon as HC.

Oh, wow...don't get me started on this. L'il Dickie Bad-odor was a disaster we are still paying for, but his REASON for ignoring Richt's interest in UNC is what really burns my @ss. Bad-odor thought Richt was "too Christian". I tell you, it's the last group of people you can openly discriminate against and get away it; Christians. But I understand why everyone is so afraid of people of faith....I mean, sure, it's the Christians I'm worried about and fretting over when I lock my doors and windows at night before I go to sleep.

We did interview him, and he asked for the job. Bad-odor then declined to further the conversations, citing Richt being "too Christian".

Bad-odor should've been fired when he failed to keep Mack. A competent AD would've gone a long way towards avoiding the resultant Torbush hired/Torbush fired/Torbush re-hired/Torbush fired again/Beamer handshake deal/Bad-odor stiffed at the altar by ole' lop-jaw/Bunting hire/Bunting kept 2 seasons too long fiasco. What an incompetent bureaucrat Li'l Dickie was!

THIS.

NO ONE in their right mind would have let Mack go at that time. Mack wanted to stay, but Tejas was throwing everything but the kitchen sink at him. He would have stayed had DB made even a modest move to keep him, but he didn't give three shiites about football and didn't care if Mack could command the money Tejas was offering, he wasn't about to give him or his assistants anything close to what they deserved.

When you factor in the Torbsh and Bunting screw ups, letting Beamer play him like a cheap fiddle AND letting Richt slip through your hands, he HAS to be one of the worst AD's to have been hired in the ACC. And with Yow at Udderfondler U, that is saying a LOT.

Mark Richt is one of the classiest coaches alive and the fact BD wouldn't give him a shot as coach because of his religious beliefs is beyond contemptible in my book.

Honestly hadn't heard the religious slant to the DB - Richt dynamic until now. Interesting, if true. The University community and even our insanely liberal student body would've loved Richt though. He does so many good deeds in the community and he's very religious but isn't in-your-face preachy about it....nor does he ever talk his political views in public.

Roy and Mark Richt would be like the classiest, most-charming coaching tandem ever haha. We'd never lose a recruit.

I can't say for certain how true it is, but I was part of internet discussions on it at the time. I don't recall the DB defenders claiming it never happened - instead, they tended to assert that maybe Richt came in preaching and thus made it inevitable that DB would have to knock him off the list.

The same crowd was opposed to us even interviewing Gus Malzahn. And again, more than a few of them got around to admitting that the known religious views and activities of Malzahn and his wife meant they would not fit at UNC.

If Richt was Islamic, we would have hired him in a New York minute. Horrible decision by a horrible AD.

i'm not a dickie b. fan with the bunting hire, being punked by frank beamer, etc. but i don't believe richt was not offered the unc job because of his beliefs. dean smith was known to be a devout Christian who attended church regularly, and the unc community had no problem with him. the difference is that dean smith did not use his position as coach to routinely proselytize his religion during interviews ostensibly about sports. if you like that fine, but i don't. if you google richt and religion you'll find that not all georgia fans are fond of richt's religious proselytizing either. richt has every right under our constitution to promote his religious beliefs any time he wants to. but some of us prefer a football coach who sticks to football. whenever i want religious guidance i go to church or talk to my priest. i have a right to switch the channel if i don't want to hear religious preaching, and i prefer a football coach at unc who doesn't make me switch the channel.

I prefer a football coach at UNC that WINS! Richt has won significantly more than Torbush, JB, and Fedora COMBINED!

IF he proselytizes, big deal. Don't listen if you don't like it. I promise, his words wouldn't hurt you. An unlike true religious zealots, he won't burn you alive (see Jordanian pilot)

And some of us prefer not to hear our hall of fame basketball coach talking in support of a mind-numbingly dumb government healthcare program or our previous hall of fame basketball coach fervently oppose the death penalty. But, here we are.

And FWIW, all they talk about on the radio here in Atlanta is UGA and I've heard a ton of Richt interviews and have never heard him reference religion once. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it's not like every other sentence he's throwing around a Bible verse or anything.

Dicky B 'pooched' our football program and should've done whatever it took to keep Mack, or at the very least bring in a proven HC or top shelf coordinator like Richt to keep the momentum going.

But dude....dude, Bunting LOVES Carolina man. Like...he BLEEDS blue you know? He'll succeed. I mean.....he has so much experience you know? A position coach for the CHIEFS!

And for head coaching experience, he cut his teeth at Rowan University (in NJ, not Rowan County in NC) coaching the mighty Profs who play their games at......wait for it..........

Dick Wackar Stadium.

Seriously. Look it up.

Preach it, bro (pun intended)

Gotta be very vigilant about those who might be citing the occasional Bible verse....yes-sir-ee, Bob. Now, the real religious fanatics who KILL in the name of their religion, it is important to be tolerant of those sub-humans and protect their "rights" at all costs!

I am not sure that I could have said it any better.

Yeah I LOL'd when I looked up Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State) and saw that. Okay, technically it's Coach Richard "Dick" Wackar Stadium, but I took the liberty of shortening it lol.

If Bunting had been brought in as DC for Richt, Bunting could have been a big success in Chapel Hill. That's 'could,' not 'would,' Bunting was not fully qualified to be a DC of a Major conference team. He surely was not remotely close to being qualified to be a Major conference HC.

But dude....dude, Bunting LOVES Carolina man. Like...he BLEEDS blue you know? He'll succeed.

Yeah, you and I love UNC sports as well, but Bunting was barely more qualified than half of the posters on this board at running a power5 program.... as we found out, unfortunately. That UNC-loving dude went 27-45 in 6 (SIX!) seasons. Of those 45 losses, 24 of them were by 17 or more points! Thank goodness he loved UNC so much though... otherwise we might have really took some azz-poundings if we were being led by a coach who didn't LOVE his school nearly as much as Bunting did.

Haha so true. I hope you sensed my dripping sarcasm in my response to your post above. The Bunting era was so incredibly damaging to Carolina Football for so many reasons beyond simply losing a bunch of games.

His tenure (2001-2006) overlapped with a time where college football really, really surged in popularity nationwide. Of course it was always popular in the South, but the late 90's and early 2000's seemed to me to be the time where it began gaining nationwide traction. You had several teams with national appeal (whether it be due to disdain or love) and cachet competing for national titles. Miami beats Nebraska, Ohio State beats Miami, USC wins a couple, Texas wins one over Michigan, etc. etc. More and more bowls pop up, BCS-driven media coverage swells, and college football suddenly finds itself as a hugely popular sport nationally.

Meanwhile, we plod along with ol' JB at the helm, winning TWO and THREE games a season. Two or three. How is that even possible? All that momentum that CFB was gaining, we barely experienced a lick of it because we were so bad. His regime set us back 10 years. I truly believe that.

AFTER it was too late and Mack had already accepted Deloss Dodd's offer to go to UT. No way to put lipstick on the pig that was Dickie Bad-odor as AD. He hired Doherty, Bunting, re-hired Torbush, got a pie in the face from Beamer when he didn't have him sign on the dotted line before leaving town, and screwed up Roy's return to Chapel Hill the first time. One of the alltime WORST, if not THE worst, AD in major college athletics history. If I was the kind of person to do it (which I'm not), catching him out in a dark alley would be fun...my visceral HATRED for that man for what he did to Carolina is only surpassed by that I have for the @ss-covering Little Weasil, Holden Thorp.
