Georgia Tech at UNC on Saturday 4 January 2020 game thread

This is going to be a season with many ugly moments. This team lacks fundamentals, which means it cannot make up for lack of great talent and experience.

The one thing you can’t do is lose home conference games to bottom feeder schools and that’s what just happened. I just don’t see how this year gets much better at this point.[/quote]

We are THE bottom feeder this year. Leaky is a huge steaming pile of disappointment. Keeling plays afraid and seems like he actively avoids the ball. Our defense is pathetic.

Platek in all likely hood is not coming back is what I was told; I could be wrong, but there is more to the "ankle sprain" than meets the eye. @imajericho that good enough for ya?

I'll keep watching and hoping for a victory every time the Heels play (just like I did during 8-20), but this team is so frustrating and disappointing to watch. I didn't expect a FF squad this year but I sure as hell didn't expect the kind of first half (lack of) effort we saw tonight from any Carolina basketball team.

Roy has some decisions to make after this season, he doesn't have to honor those schollys, they have to be earned..

Yeah, it’s extremely frustrating to watch such minimal basketball IQ. Too many injuries, too little talent, too little experience, too little fire, and not one good outside shooter. Hard to overcome that.

Roy doesn’t roll like that, nor should he. Limited as several of them may be in talent, they committed when others wouldn’t.

I don't mind the lack of experience, talent, too many injuries, etc.
The thing that frustrates me is lack of consistent effort, fire, and hustle
Any athlete can get on the court and give those if they want to.

I started watching but had to stop and use my time for something better. I couldn’t see wasting my time for that mess. Second half started out with promise but quickly went south again.

Just a thought should we abandon the frantic pace of play and slow it down? Along with ramp up the defense and try to win low scoring games like uva? Reason being we just don’t have any great ball handlers. It’s not flashy or Roy’s way but is working for the hoos.

We had ONE guy we absolutely couldn't afford to get hurt. And of course he got hurt - along with everybody else.

I am not giving up on the season yet, but will continue my mode of watching games after the fact, and only if we win. I am getting to frustrated with our struggles. Man! I wonder how Roy and the players must be feeling?!

Roy has three issues. And I dont know that he can overcome any of them:

1-- this is just a bad shooting team. Got all kinds of good looks in the first half, and many more than they made in the 2nd half. They just cant shoot.
2-- a total lack of lateral quickness. This is what is causing all the issues on the defensive end. Not a player on the team can stop the dribble drive. And to add to that, help doesnt come as urgently as it needs to.
3-- Just a general lack of toughness. Brooks has it in him from time to time, but across the board this team is about as soft as I have seen. I dont know if they lack confidence, or have already resigned themselves to their fate and just figure why bother

Told by whom?

This team lacks consistency, drive, chemistry, heart, as well as fundamentals. If Platek is transferring out, perhaps it is to get away from all that, shall we say, less than desirable mojo.

That gets us to an issue: Roy is a system coach. He coaches according to one vision. He runs.

Bear Bryant was a football example of a coach who made major changes to get the most from the talent he had. When he had top QBs, he passed more than anybody in the SEC. When he had no QBs on campus who were top level passers, he switched to a wishbone.

Roy intends to run his system come Hell or high water.

Yea that was a weak effort to say the least. I’m worried about division within the team at this point. I dont know what else can explain it. Once again...i hate it for roy. I know he pours his heart and soul into these guys and to see such.....i dont know what to call it....lackadaisical effort maybe....is hard.

That's what I'm wondering too - is there some chemistry or bad attitude(s) behind the scenes that are having a negative effect on this team? Maybe it's just me but something doesn't feel right.

10-2 st the first TV timeout. Why Smith came in so early is a mystery. Carolina putting up bricks from every direction. Brooks already o for three. May have to put in Pierce early again.

I was listening to Jones & Eric on the radio, Montross said it was Jeremiah’s responsibility to get back on one of Ga Tech’s early run outs, also said he was certain that’s why he came out so early. Apparently he did a bunch of other stuff that pissed Roy off too, but not rotating back was the culprit the first time he came out.

Sure. Then it sucked the post after. While also stating you are a fair weather fan. So, grats to that, bruh.
uh naw bruh i am no fair weather fan, but I wasn't gonna watch the rest of that game. I took my 2 youngest out to eat and let them pick a toy from a store. Sometimes I gotta step back so I remember there are way more important things in my life than a bball, football, soccer, etc game goin on... I also follw field hockey lax, and any other sport that unc has... I am many things fair weather fan ain't one of them

next game start brooks & the last 4 guys on the bench who never play .. till the first tv timeout

Other Gt dunk and Black scores on a baseline drive 96-83 final and it is Platek’s plus minus that decides the game.
That’s a low blow.

Other than Brooks, GT had about 3 times the "want to" than we did. And that is not only disheartening but very concerning.
Yes, it is. I’m not sure the guys on this team understand the level of commitment that it takes to play at UNC.

And to his credit, Roy took the blame for his players’ shortcomings, most coaches would have said something along the lines of “My guys played like they’ve never seen any of the principles that we work on in practice every day! They played with a lack of heart, execution, and smarts.”

For some reason, this team just isn’t listening or “buying in”, call it what you will. Our chemistry just isn’t good right now. Part of it is injuries but there’s more to it than that. I know one thing, I’ve never seen Roy this frustrated before. In the postgame presser, he said he wanted to keep the players out on the court to run sprints at halftime, but didn’t want to embarrass them. Perhaps he should have. That would have made a statement to the players.

The players have to want to win as much as he does and frankly, most don’t. And I don’t know what he has to do to get through to these knuckleheads.

Pretty bad when Roy says the guys don’t seem to be buying in or getting it and think they can just put the jersey on and roll out there and play.

You are missing one of the fundamental points of Carolina basketball. While I find your suggestion unethical you are right it might provide some short-term benefit. but the long-term success of this program is based on doing the right thing and building a family. I'll trade a down year occasionally for that.

Big time reinforcements coming next year. If there is any truth to Platek transfering, maybe we can add to it.

ETA: let me add that I'm not saying I want to see AP leave. I hate to see any Tar Heel leave.
I have not heard anything about Platek having finalized a decision to leave after this season, I have heard that it is a consideration because his projected PT does not look good with the talent we have coming in to his position. I do not buy that the ankle injury is a story to cover up that he is transferring, he has already played in to many games to be a transfer that could use this season as a red shirt. I have heard NOTHING to indicate Platek is in any way in Roy's dog house, all I have heard is the kid is legit hurt but is expected to come back and play in a few games.

As I shared early season, there are 2 current guys on our roster that would not even mildly surprise me if they transferred after this season simply due to the talent level coming in and their desire to play. If they do, they will have Roy's total support but I do not believe Roy wants either of them to leave and he does not move good kids off his roster in order to bring in freshmen, just not how Roy does his job.
