This should come as no surprise to anyone who's watched d00k basketball under the "guidance" of the LOM. From Laettner stomping on a player when he was on the floor to Henderthug breaking Hans' nose to the routine leg whips and flops. It is SOP in Durham.
And when the LOM says "Henderson is the real victim here" and trys to defend Allen's actions, he's simply showing his true colors.
To wit, his comments to reporters following the latest incident:
"When you write a bad article, I would just expect you to call me and apologize, but you've never done that," Krzyzewski half-joked with a reporter, then continued. "I handle things the way I handle them, and I think I've handled this correctly, and moving forward I will continue to handle it correctly, and I don't need to satisfy what other people think that I should do. And I'm a teacher and a coach, and I'm responsible for that kid. So I know him better than anybody. So to think that it's the last thing said about this to him is wrong. Obviously we will do more. Doesn't mean you have to see it, or anybody else has to see it, but what he did tonight was right. That's what people do. They say they're sorry. They accept responsibility. They want to make sure that the other party knows that. Anyone else who wants to take shots about anything else -- about Duke and me or whatever -- go for it. Go for it. Because that's territory that I'm comfortable with."
The CBS article goes on to say:
This is not a good look for Krzyzewski. In trying to get his message across about knowing his player best, he also puts on an air of superiority. The last time Krzyzewski was this defensive in a postgame news conference, he wound up having to backtrack and apologize after video caught him admonishing Oregon's Dillon Brooks after the Ducks bounced Duke in the last season's NCAA Tournament.
So it's Allen's 3rd tripping incident and his coach get's defensive and makes it more about himself and how he runs his program than about getting a very troubled young man the help he needs. IOW, it's all about the LOM once again.
I've always admired the LOM's ability to coach, much as I admired Bobby Knight as a coach, though it's common knowledge that I think they're both royal arses. But I have to give Knight credit here, I don't think he would have allowed this to happen twice, let alone three times. He would have nipped it in the bud. This is as much an indictment of the LOM as it is Allen. He is the adult and as a self proclaimed "Leader of Men", he's responsible for addressing Allen's behavior in no uncertain terms and getting the young man help. As Bilas aluded, Allen's behavior is bizarre. He hinted that Allen needs counseling and I agree. He's not going to get help from the LOM, and that's a shame as well as a disgrace.
