Harry Giles with another knee surgery

I guess maybe that 100% recovered injury report on Giles dukies shared was not exactly 100% ...

I hate to hear that. He seems like a really nice kid. My daughter and I met him one time in Hanes Mall in Winston and he took the time to say hello to her and talk for a bit. She was 7 or 8 at the time so she thought that was really cool. He was respectful and a nice young man.

I don't wish injury or re-injury on any kid and I was not looking to poke fun in my comment. We were shared by dukies that Giles was 100% recovered form both knee issues and my point was and is that clearly he was not back to 100%.

I'm not sure who shared that but it is and was incorrect. He was getting close to 100% but most people (who know anything about the situation) didn't expect him to be at 100% or start game 1, they expected Duke to bring him along slowly... well it just got a lot slower. I hate it for him and hope that this is the last procedure he has to undergo.

Hate it for ANY of the kids to get injured. Hope he has a full/speedy recovery.

Hate it for any kid, even one going to dook. Beginning to wonder if Giles will ever get over his knee issues.

Yeah - that's definitely a concern now. Good and bad news is that he's young. He can recover from these things quickly and fully. At the same time, if your knees are bad at 18, they are usually much worse by 25.

Hope Duke doesn't rush him back too soon and jeopardize the kid's career.

.......easier said than done. We all remember Delvon Roe, Michigan State. His knee issues also started in HS..........

Sucks for the kid, looks like he is a special talent. Hopefully he comes back and is able to perform at full potential.

Sad for Giles, but Duke is well-stocked with bigs this year, even without Giles.

Jefferson
Obi
Jeter
Bolden
DeLaurier
Vrankovich

Plus, in a pinch they can play Tatum or Robinson (both 6'8) at the 4.

Obviously you don't want to have a guy as good as Giles on the bench or playing under par, but Duke is loaded.

There are some who think Bolden could be OAD but might not have gotten enough minutes to prove it. This might change things for him.

First year in awhile dook actually has depth underneath,I agree. Know you are loaded when you can withstand not having a potential top 5 draft pick available for awhile.

The Duke is loaded argument is an interesting one to me.

Yes, they certainly appear to be- but games aren't played on paper.

1) There have been more than a few Duke highly touted freshman in recent years to not pan out. There's no guarantee all of these will.

2) Duke is heavy in the paint, and run an offense that rarely runs through the paint- if at all.

3) It's not their strongest 3 point shooting team in recent memory, which is where they succeed the most.

4) Depth- which they seemingly have in spades- is a problem for Duke. K likes to run 7-8 deep at most. Too many players on this roster expecting big minutes for that to be the case. That takes K out of his comfort zone to a degree.

5) Allen sharing shots, minutes, and the spotlight spells trouble. Look no further than multiple Thornton shoves and tripping incidents to see that he's a hot head. This could spell locker room issues.

On the one hand, Duke could win all but 1-2 games and coast to a national title. There's certainly reason to justify this possibility.

On the other hand, they could be "too loaded" if that makes sense, have too many egos to manage, and struggle at times from their youth.

I don't know which way it will go...but let's stop referring to a team that may start 4 freshman as loaded before the young men have ever stepped on a college basketball court.

I always like Duke pessimism, but I gotta disagree when you say they aren't loaded. Unfortunately, even without Giles for December, they're stacked.

"3) It's not their strongest 3 point shooting team in recent memory, which is where they succeed the most."

Well, Allen shot 41.7% from long distance and Jones shot 41.5%. And Kennard only shot 32% but he looks to be a significantly better shooter than that. So I'd say they'll be pretty darn good from downtown.

.

Not sure about the Natty, but I don't care if Dook wins 30+ games as long as they get 2-4 losses.

Specifically, those losses should occur on:
Thursday February 9th
Saturday March 4th
Saturday March 11th
And on any given day from March 16 to April 3.

Preferably, each loss will be to the team wearing the correct shade of blue.

It is interesting to think about what k will do with this deep a roster. As mentioned he usually sticks with 7-8 guys at most. You'd have to imagine if he stays with this strategy there will be some very unhappy 5 stars sitting on the bench. I almost have to believe he will adjust this strategy a bit and play more guys like Roy does. We shall see.

The first time in game action that Giles tweaks his knee,he is done. His parents will shut him down and take their chances in the draft

I am very sorry for Mr. Giles and his family! I hope he recovers fully and plays for a long time as an elite level pro. I will pray that this is so.

I also hope he and his family take their time and make a decision for their own best interest and for Mr. Giles long term health. Rushing back could be disastrous!

With or without Giles, duke IMO will be a tuff out. But it is not as if this duke team does not have questions, first and foremost to me is they really do not have a PG. That is a strange situation for duke, they have a couple of combos in Allen and Jackson that should be able to handle the PG role to an extent but it isn't what duke is used to.

Last season they had Thorton who gave them 25+ mins a game and Ingram grew up as a PG and was very comfortable putting the ball on the floor and distributing. Allen did spend a lot of time at the point last season but he looks to score more than distribute, he had the green light to score at will last season but guys like Tatum, Jackson, and Bolden, and Giles when he comes back, they need the ball. I don't think making those guys re-bounders as Allen skips and trips his way to drives to the basket as he falls down when someone breathes on him, not sure that is going to work so well this time out.

Im surprised this isnt a turn off for some kids. Just like the perception of one and done at Carolina, and how its apparently used against us. You would think this would be used against K. If Giles wasnt hurt, does Jeter see the floor at all? Hell, he still might not see too much action. Just using Jeter as an example.

I wouldn't doubt it. Multiple knee injuries have already cost this young man a ton of money. The pros have to be wary of drafting him in the lottery.

Yep. The surgeries are racking up, and NBA teams are noticing. I wouldnt be shocked if he decides to take his chances of not playing at all this year.

^^ He's projected as the #3 pick by draftexpress and nbadraft.net

He's gotta play this season if teams are going to invest time and money in him. Other than the Sixers, you think any NBA teams would be interested in drafting someone in the first round that has missed 3 of the last 4 years?

I've watched Jackson a few times, and he is GOOD. He is not Thornton, not even close. He will run this team and run it well at the point spot.

Literally every NBA team would draft him. He'll be 19 years old that plays like Kevin Garnett.

He'd be drafted, sure. But the idea that sitting out the season would be more beneficial to his draft position seems a little premature.

First of all, I wish Giles a full recovery. But, if anyone of you recall I posted an "Open Letter" on this board to Giles after his injury in prep school and told him to skip his year with Duke because of his two knee injuries. There is no way this kid should be attempting to play a year at Duke with his entire NBA career at stake. If the kid was smart, he would not play for Duke this year. There is a search feature on this board and I'm going to try and find that thread. Mikey, can you locate it? Again, I wish the kid the best, but if he comes back a rips his knee again who gets the blame for this? If Giles wants to play one year of college, why not redshirt this year be in good shape next year in lieu of taking a risk and ruining his career? Bottomline, Duke fans are selfish and so is K, The Leader of Men. Since K is the expert on redshirts, why not redshirt Giles? There is no way Giles should be playing this year.... no fricken way. I repeat, I hope he gets well and not have anymore knee injuries, but if comes back and hurt the knee again this year it's on him, his family and K's selfishness.

That's great and all...but a UNC fan telling a Duke player to sit out a season isn't exactly an unbiased opinion.

Feel bad for young man. I actually picked Duke to win it all this year, without Giles they are just another good team.
