Hubert Davis

Was thinking last night, as I was sipping my bourbon and smoking my cigar... Could Roy return for two years? After watching the program this season and seeing the lack of a real roster next season... love the program too much to sit by idle? He could be really refreshed. May have learned more about NIL and the portal over the last couple years. Maybe he has a better coach in waiting this time. Maybe i had too much bourbon when I pondered of this.
No, it’s a good thought but I think Roy is enjoying retirement and all that drove him to retire is as bad or worse. I don’t think he’d ever come back at this point in his life but sure wouldn’t with current nil and transfer bs.

I agree that Roy likely would not come back at this point. But I can't help but wonder what his thoughts are about the program. He seems to be at most games, so he knows what is going on. Has he spoken with Hubert, and if so what has been said?

Maybe we could lure K out of retirement for couple of years & he could show unc the ropes on recruiting top players legally now !! LoL

He's doing well, but why would he be interested? Maybe I'm wrong but I imagine the Houston job was always his dream.

That's the case for a lot of decent coaches. Unless money is their main objective AND we are willing to pony up - which is by no means clear - why would a top coach leave the job they now have?

If they have a great gig now and aren't disgruntled, why would they want to risk that? Whereas if they are disgruntled, do we want them to bring that with them in the hopes that they will become gruntled here?

We're not getting Mark Few to leave Gonzaga. We're not luring Brad Stevens from the NBA. I suspect Shaka Smart has found his forever home. Dusty May is in his first year at Michigan. I see no reason to think Nate Oats will leave Alabama. Just to mention some names that routinely come up.

In most cases, I'd guess those other coaches would simply use our offer to help them get a raise where they are.

While I like Wes, I agree he hasn't shown himself to be the answer. So let me ask again: Who's on the List?
Kelvin is from Pembrook, plyed at UNC-Pembrook , has always been proud to be from the state of NC as well as his Lumbee heritage. He has family allover Roberson county, I think he has a home still in NC. Rumor I have always heard is that UNC was his dream job but never felt he had a shot at it. He has had some "run ins" with the NCAA in his past back when the NCAA was actually enforcing their rules. He does have a son and a daughter that work in the Houston athletic dept but they could easy come with.

Much like Calhoun did for UConn, Kelvin has made that Houston job a great job, it wasn't all that when he took it. I think he would love to come home to finish out his career with the flagship school of his home state. Top of my list for sure.

You make him sound like a more plausible option than I thought.

I'm still wondering why there hasn't been a team-only meeting. Or has there and we just haven't heard about it?

If not, does that mean the team feels good about the coaching they are receiving? I mean, maybe they think Hubert and company are doing a good job.

Let's face it, if you're on the team you probably know its shortcomings better than we do. Maybe they think Hubert is getting all he can out of this squad at this point in time, and that they are heading in the right direction.

Anyone have insider dope?

Does the change in football apply more or less pressure to Hubert/basketball? I say more since it’s such a dominant part of the brand. That makes me think it’s possible that if the POB see recruiting way off and results on the court going the wrong direction that a change might actually take place.

Kelsey is off to a good start at Louisville. Looking at his coaching record, he looks pretty good but not sure fire. And yet he took over at a dumpster fire and is turning it around. So far.

If he proves himself at Lvl, we're back to the "why would he leave" question. Why jump ship when you're already doing well at a storied basketball venue?
If we’re entertaining the “why would he leave” scenario, the luster of the UNC job based on the last 6 years (yes, including Roy’s last 2) is probably as low as it’s possibly ever been over that long of a time period… so you could make that argument that no coaches from any perennial NCAAT schools would want it.

It’s very plausible that the majority of the names people will throw out on here would likely say thanks but no thanks. I don’t think the job would be fawned over the way many on here think.

you are right, and that was my argument from the start when Hubcaps was hired. if it doesn’t work, you have set yourself back at least 5 years and hope that he didn’t run it down to the point where it’s not appealing. sadly, i think we are in that scenario where it’s not what it once was.

The person who IMO always has the best inside info about the progrum is @bleeduncblue - if he cares to weigh in. I think he knows people in the office and some big time boosters quite well and what they are thinking and saying

Many of us that disliked the hire also liked Hubert personally. None of this is an attack on his character, he just simply wasn’t qualified and should have never been handed the keys to this job. Now 4 years later we are swimming in mediocrity, poor roster construction and playing disorganized basketball with another double digit loss season coming. This isn’t Carolina basketball and this isn’t was success looks like. Carolina can either cut bait this year or prolong what appears to be inevitable.

You just cannot allow a program to sink further unless you’re absolutely confident a 180 turnaround is happening.

I do not have a lot of info that I trust enough to pass along publicly, but I will say that Hubert is benefiting from the Belichick hire as it is currently taking attention off the bball struggles, to some degree. However, it's a 2 edged sword bc NIL is going up across the board and Hubert and staff will be expected to pick up their portal skill IMMENSELY in the off-season.

Along with the NIL increase is going to come staff expectations beyond the Head Coach. We will see a bball GM hired and some staff changes, for sure. There are 2 scenarios at play: UNC misses the NCAAT and the entire staff is replaced. Or UNC makes the NCAAT, Hubert is retained but his staff is changed to some degree. There is zero chance we have the same set of coaches on the bench next season.

Appreciate you chiming in. You’re an old timer on this site like myself. Always appreciated your insight from within the basketball office.
