Hubert Davis

Their 2025 class is top-ranked (per 247) but isn't nearly as good as the current freshmen.

Scheyer showed he could fill in the gaps from the portal pretty well, but he'll need to do more of that - depending on who returns - to keep Duke on top, even in this mediocre conference. And if Hubert has the NIL he needs, he could give Scheyer a run.
Duke is still investing more in high school recruiting than the portal, in other words playing freshman over upper classmen. They have been fortunate to be able to get the biggest and best of high school recruiting. But Ky was doing it before duke and slipped when they had a class that didn't work out as projected, freshmen don't always work out as day 1 super stars. They have built their run with the best BIG MEN coming from high school ball, your big men are the real different makers.

My sense is that there are fewer "failures" among top freshmen these days. They are still freshmen, but they play a lot more in front of big crowds every summer, so they are more "ready" for the next level.

I say that's my sense, but I don't know if it's true. Are there numbers on that?

You have to decide what type of talent/make up you want. What has hurt UNC in recent years is they will recruit a top kid and that kid will sit much more than he would at other places. That's because the UNC way is to reward seniority. Teams like UK and Duke turn over their roster more frequently so more minutes are available. It's tough to get top kids to come play 15 mins off the bench. So, either UNC needs to play the best talent and bring older kids off the bench, or they need to admit they won't get top kids as frequently and need to find kids that can develop. The latter is not the state of current college basketball. You need a mix of high school and portal kids each year and your roster will look different year to year. I'm not a fan of that, but it is the reality of college sports.

If I were to rank playing positions n order of importance to a team winning I would have the center position as most important to wining, followed by the PG position. Argue if you will but I say this not as just what I believe but to as well bring up the point. That point being how many centers has Hubert successfully brought to UNC, he is about to wrap up his 4th season as head coach? I believe that number is 2, they being Pate Nance and Tony Shaver. I do not include Lubin in that because I don't buy him as a 5 at 6'8", sorry but just don't. How about PGs Hubert has brought in, I believe that would be 1 single PG in what is about to be the end of his 4th season as head coach, that 1 being Cadeau.

Now Hubert has brought in several 2s, 3, and an interesting assortment of 4s but the 2 most critical to winning positions, 2 centers, one being a total bust and the other was made to play way out of position, used as a stretch 4 Pete Nance? One single PG... So we are having now to play a lot of guys out of position, must go in to every game we play with the disadvantage of having one of the smallest front courts in the NCAA to now go along with one of the smallest back courts in the NCAA as well. Right there is the problem and we fully realized this before tip off of the first pre-season game, we didn't just learn this 2 weeks ago.

Excuse me if I struggle to understand why so much fury now for something we have known all season? I am not in to the burn it down now movement, I am more in to finding the problems and fixing them so they are not there for who ever our head coach may be. I find it near impossible to believe that Hubert went in to the last portal (as examaple) fully knowing just how badly we needed a solid center and all we can come away with is Lunin and Claude? I want to know what real factors played in to that and that is not being discussed, common sense tells you there were other factors at play that no one seems interested in talking about, I want to know what they were and how they are to be or are now fixed. I find myself nearly every single game we have played this season think to myself "sure wish we had got that big man"? I want to know, for example, why Syracuse can get a Eddy lampkins but UNC can't?

Btw, what was with Hubert's response to a pretty vanilla question about the GM search?

“Yeah, I’m going to stay away from those comments in regards to a GM. I feel like over the last couple of weeks, or two-and-a-half weeks, in response to my answer to a question on a radio show, it’s been twisted in regards to supporting different narratives. And my focus right now is this team and coaching this team and trying to reach our full potential and trying to become the best that we can become this season.”

Just very odd. Now it's becoming a media vs UNC thing even though Hubert can completely control the narrative surrounding the GM search. He knows that this kind of response will open up more theories and opinions about the future of UNC basketball. He had an opportunity to set the narrative and decided to have a passive-aggressive type response.

This is a really minor thing, but it's part of being the CEO of an organization, in which the head coach is in major college basketball.

He just opened up more opportunities for his words to get twisted. Not very savvy for a person who was in the media.

This is correct. UNC will be in the SEC within 6 years.
Yeah, I said last week we would be out of the ACC in 5yrs, 2 would not surprise me, I was being conservative in my estimation being honest. The ACC is about to be blown up, FSU and Clemson may be holding the dynamite but UNC holds the torch for the fuse.
