I have a horrible idea.

A van down by the river
I'm going to let OOTB decide where I'm going on my next vacation.

So, I've been mulling this idea around in my head for the last week or so. I have to make sure there are some checks and balances so that some ludicrous option doesn't win out. Ultimately, I reserve the right to not be bound by the results, but if you guys play nice this could be fun and I'll defer to the board's decision.

Here's the background. I'm going to take at least a week of vacation, probably sometime in late April/early May when students are still in class. I'm willing to go anywhere in the continental U.S., i.e. the lower 48 states. Many of you know I like camping, backpacking, and have two touring kayaks that are capable of navigating coastal waters, lakes, and slow moving rivers (class I rapids). I also like exploring new cities. My trip to Canada last summer was awesome because I was primitive camping on a lake one night and in a hotel in downtown Halifax the next. That said, I'm also open to (most) new experiences.

Here are the ground rules for you, the voters. You are welcome to submit as many vacation suggestions as you'd like. The more detail, the better. It can be somewhere you've been before, somewhere you'd like to know more about, whatever. I'll leave the nominations open indefinitely until I feel like you guys have run out of ideas. I am also allowed to submit suggestions. Once I close the nominations, I will pick up to 10 of my favorites. This will allow me to weed out any smart ass ideas because **** you, I'm not spending a week in the Bates Motel.

I will then create a poll with the top 10 picks, and each of you will have the option to vote for up to 3 of them. Of course random poasters will be able to vote, too, since this isn't a premium board. You can change your votes at any time but the poll will close after 10 days. Whichever option receives the most votes will determine my next vacation. If there is a tie, I will create a new poll as the tiebreaker.

I'm probably forgetting something, so I reserve the right to amend the above as necessary. Otherwise, let it rip.

======================

Edit: Keeping a running tab of viable suggestions in the OP.

- Acadia National Park / Bar Harbor (Maine)
- Bald Head Island (North Carolina)
- Buffalo National River (Arkansas)
- Bourbon Trail (Kentucky)
- Catalina Island / Charter Islands (California)
- Chattanooga (Tennessee)
- College Baseball Trip (Carolinas/Virginia)
- Glacier National Park (Montana)
- Lake Powell houseboat (Utah)
- Ocracoke Island (North Carolina)
- Olympic National Park / Seattle (Washington)
- Sanibel Island (Florida)
- Washington, D.C.

On a serious note, I visited The Richie Rich house last year. Never saw the indoor McDonald's, but damn that place is amazing.

If you've never been to Glacier National Park is great.
This is at the top of my National Park bucket list, not counting Alaska. I'd love to bring my own kayak but the drive is too long. Can always rent. My uncle lives in Sandpoint, Idaho which isn't too bad a drive. This one has a good chance of making the top 10.

Hmm. The time frame cuts out the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas due to possible heavy snow.

Are you taking the dogs?

RH, 71 brings up a good point a lot of areas in GNP will be snowed in including the Going to the Sun Road during this time. You don't want to miss it.

I rented a houseboat, and a small cruiser boat on Lake Powell last year and highly recommend it. We stayed 4 days and there is no cell phone signal so you are truly in wilderness.

Have you done Seattle - Olympic Peninsula?
I lived in Tacoma for 4 years. Didn't really want to move away when I did but made a compromise with the ex (which of course I regret in retrospect). I've done a lot out there but wouldn't mind going back. It would take a lifetime to experience everything the area has to offer. I never did the full loop around the Peninsula so that's a possibility. Mmmmm, Dungeness crab.

I've actually kayaked the upper part of Glen Canyon on Lake Powell. Beautiful area. I like the houseboat idea, although it might be overkill for a single traveler. Need to look into this.

In all seriousness, I can't contribute anything to this thread cuz y'alls idea of a vacation is doing strenuous shit like hiking, backpacking, and kayaking.

My idea of vacation is like.... relaxing. Like going to the beach for five days or going to a destination city for a few days and getting drunk.
Not necessarily. I was freaking exhausted after my Canada trip. Recommend me a great beach town or whatever and I could be equally content just kicking it for a week. Those kinds of vacations are better for recharging than ones where you're trying to fit everything into a limited amount of time.

THIS I can do. Let me put some thought in it.

I don't know what all you'd do there, but my very first thought when I read your OP was Montana. You've probably been there, but seriously Montana is the most breathtaking place, in terms of natural beauty. I've been several times, but only in the winter (to ski). Never been in the summer, but I'd really love to get out there in the summer.

You'll laugh, but Bozeman actually has a really hopping downtown. That could be your home base. When I ski, I go to Big Sky, which is an incredibly scenic hour drive from Bozeman airport.

ETA: Plus, I've been watching the show Longmire on Netflix (it's in Wyoming, but....you know, close enough) and it's really made me want to go see Montana again.

I hitchhiked from Missoula, MT to Cheyenne, WY in the fall of 1995 with a stopover at the Holiday Inn in Bozeman. There's actually a couple of great stories here that I'll tell some other time. I'd definitely go back. Like you said, beautiful country and not far from @prlyles suggestion of Glacier National Park. All sorts of outdoors things to do in Montana.
