If Mack has any decency

What do you think about the Coach at Army…
Jeff Moncken has been the most successful Army coach in many decades. The man has 2 double digit win teams and 2 more 9 win teams. He is the only Army coach to take 3 consecutive teams to bowls. His teams are defined by endlessly tough battling. They are never soft, never complacent.

The big issue is that he is a Paul Johnson running triple option coach. That is a key help for service academies with their built in limitations, but it is limiting to any program that would aspire to win a Major conference championship.

Could he hire an OC who is not about triple option run game? Yes. Rat Face coached very differently at Army than he did even in his first year at Dook.

not at all trying to make excuses believe me, because there are none. But I also won't pass up an opportunity to bitch about poor officiating. That first dook TD was scored because on that play, the refs missed a hold against one of our guys who almost certainly would have cut him off just as the dookie was cutting up toward the EZ.

That being said, after DECADES of being a diehard Carolina football fan, for the very first time I have all but completely lost interest in us. Of course I said something similar after JM yet I was right there again for dook.
I completely lost interest when they was moving in the right direction and pushed Butch out, we were on pace to move the program in the direction Clemson when in when they hired Dabo, but we killed that.

I'm with you there my friend. Butch Davis was literally a dream come true for me, and when the dust settled enough for it to be known that he wasn't being held directly responsible, I was ecstatic. And then the moron representing the 'football smells dirty to our elitist-wannabe crowd' lowered the boom.

I didn't completely lose interest in football at that time but my perception of my beloved university will never be the same. To me it was like the University of North Carolina at Mayberry where Dean Andy Griffith had retired and Barney Fife was now trying to run the show.

I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed what I think I have over the course of time. When we are svcking our worst, it seems that the fundamentals have regressed to pee wee level. I notice it mostly in tackling. In the dook game for instance, we looked refreshingly adept in that regard in the first half, but in the second half we did a lot of grabbing at the upper body. I wonder if what is missing is the coaching of toughness and discipline.

I also thought some of the playcalling was mindless. Why go downfield when you desperately need two yards and the 'run Hampton up the gut' play isn't consistently effective. Are you telling me you can't dump a ball short or install some comeback routes?

Yes, that is missing. Mack is in coaching terms an anti-Dooley. Mack is all about Image and playing for the cameras. He is all mouth, all charm. Dooley was about toughness and discipline. Mack should coach girls badminton or golf or tennis. Maybe croquet.

Also it seems we have had a punt blocked in every game this year…And yet still line up in the same formation…

He should have fired on the spot after JMU…

You said it. Bill Dooley as HC is what made me such a diehard fan. I LOVED that guy, pacing the sidelines with his cigs and producing tough football players and winning teams Maybe a tad conservative on offense but I wasn't complaining. He was the first of so many disappointing missed opportunities in my time. I never have gotten it clear what happened, there were so many scenarios presented. I just believe that had he continued coaching us, we would have seen football as well-supported and successful as BB. I would have let him be AD and coach in a heartbeat if that in fact is what he wanted.

I've always been taken with hard-nosed, effective playmaking defense and the current tendencies are not easy to deal with. I'll say what I say every now and then, where is Denny Marcin and Carl Torbush when we really need them?

Sounds like what UNC needs…Also I see his cousin is Todd the OC at the Ravens…I believe he was at UGA also…As far as the triple option goes hell everyone is running the option still just in a spread formation…

Man give me tough and disciplined football players and you can win a lot of games…

That much bad Special Teams Play and Dooley would have wanted to strangle which ever coach was in charge. And everybody in the stands or in front of the TV would have known it.

All those penalties - we are back to the worst of Fedora days.

the penalty thing is bothersome to say the least…that’s discipline and details…does mack ever address this in a presser?…every nfl coach in a post-game interview is always asked about this, every one of them.

i can almost deal with aggressive penalties, almost, especially when you’re generally not a high penalized team…but when you are, as we’re seeing, you cannot afford this and be in + yardage situations…have not done a deep dive with that because i simply don’t want to spend the time…is that apathy, probably.

the pre-snap stuff, no excuse…that’s why you bench dudes…this coddling thing because you’re the best player we’ve got at the position is bs.

Monken would be acceptable to the PTB because he would uphold the integrity of the University. He is also a strict disciplinarian.
We could do a lot worse than Jeff Monken.

I would not want the running triple option. Other than that, I like him a lot. Can he get an OC in the Mike Leach school, which means he wants to use a passing game somewhat similar to what triple option run offense aims to do.

Mack Brown was touted as the super lovable Hall of Fame coach whose very presence would keep fans ever optimistic and ready to buy tickets. Mack the savior. Mack quickly came to believe, as did his fanboytsm, that Mack saved UNC once before: that Mack took over after Dick Crum drove UNC football to its lowest depth ever and then brilliantly built it back against all odds to heights it had never seen before.

Of course all that is utter crap. Crum's worst UNC teams were 5-6. His last team lost to 3 Top Ten teams. If Mack had played that schedule, he'd have befouled his pants and blamed it all on Crum.

Mack took a 5-6 team, with quite a few starters and even more lettermen, coming back and turned it into a 1-10 team. Then he repeated that record. Mack took UNC football to its lowest depth ever, and then since has lived the lie that totally overrated reality.

Mack is and always has been a silver-tongued devil. Around him always grows a system of endless spin, which is advertising, propaganda. Such a person requires subordinates who are his formed Yes Men. Mack needs assistant coaches and other staff whop are his former players and other BFFs to feed his ego.

The phrase that best capsules the entire Mack coaching career is: Image is Everything.

But reality always eventually pushes its nose under the tent. This coming Saturday will be another such event. The Mack fanboys in Admin and among boosters are certain that no coach could ever inspire more devotion and confidence that Mack: its an article of faith. If that were true, then UNC fans would have faith that Mack the HOFer can right any season back to3ward a conference championship and so would fill stadiums of any size. Pitt is 4-0 and has won the ACC while Mack wasted Sam Howell. If UNC fans had. any faith in Mack the Self-Slobbering Mouth, Kenan would be overflowing with Carolina Blue fans come Saturday. The spirit there would be festive confidence in the future of UNC football.

What we will see is a stadium no more than half full. And most UNC fans will be despondent. Pittfasn will be disappointed that Mack has so driven down UNC football that Pitt with a Road win to go 5-0 still won't be ranked, just as 5-0 Dook did not earn ranking after coming back from down 20 to Mack. IT just means nothing to real CFB people for anybody to drub Mack and his team.

Mack never should have been rehired. If he were hired, the moment he named his staff, he should have been fired for Cause (stupidity, perhaps early phase dementia related). If Mack had been kept with utter crap staff, he should have been fired after his 3rd season went down with a losing record.

Mack is now a definite and growing liability, which should be obvious to all and sundry. No 6-6 minor bowl team can change that, nor can any 8-4 upper minor bowl team against such a weak schedule.

Right - that's why I mentioned Leach. He was always clear that his offense was meant to be a passing-first version of the triple option running game. Spread the D as wide as possible, with the added advantage that the passing version also forces the D far back. That last part works only when you have a first rate passer and at least 1 top WR deep threat.

I could see a Jeff Monken regime bringing back all the team discipline needed: reviving the now long lost tough football culture of UNC.

I wish I could say that without chocking. But because I knew how Mack and his closest people always lied all the time about what UNC was when he took over and this how he was THE SAVIOR of something he inherited that had been taken to its all time depths, I followed Mack's fall at Texas closely. So I knew all his mistakes and saw how they corresponded with his mistakes with assistants and players at UNC.

I knew Mack would come back to UNC and repeat his Texas errors. He cannot change his leopard spots. His ego is far too string to ever think it possible he could have made huge mistakes that needed correcting.

yeah I know, I was joking.

And I followed Mack's performance at Texas and I was underwhelmed. No one in the entire country had as rich a recruiting hotbed as he did, and he harvested it well. People will say wow he had a great record there, but considering the talent he had at his disposal, it should have been better with multiple natties.

So I'm with you to a great degree in that regard. So far as his honesty and that sort of thing, I don't care too much about that stuff. I just want to not suck when there's no reason to..

having a jeff monken doesn’t mean they’re married to his offensive philosophy in this day and age, we just need discipline and a steady hand…saban went right to the spread with kiffin.

the problem is the other side of the ball…this program isn’t going to refresh on defense with the spread or the option on offense…the kids just aren’t developing.

Part of that development is use is certainly lack of proper funds, entals based coaching in HS. But a good staff on D would get the job done.

Dick Crum certainly did not take UNC football to "the lowest level ever" or anything like that. His recruiting was suspect, but I have heard players, including Lawrence Taylor, praise his Xand0 coaching. If you want "lowest level" coaches, I would offer George Barclay, Jim Hickey, Mack 1-10 (twice) and probably some others.

Tell that to the most Mack-slurping Mack fanboys. I still have to keep repeating it to pole who have come to believe, as the Mck lover sin the media early in his UNC time, were promoting. It was all Crum's fault. crum made UNC football its worst ewve3r. No coach could have done better what the nothing that crum left than Mack the savior.

Mack has always used his ability to talk golden crap and persuade pile, too con people into giving him what he wants and and thunking of him as he demands. And that necessarily means that other people get tarnished falsely. Crum is an example. Mack at UNC had lows far lower than Crum at UNC did, and Crum's UNC highs are higher than Mack;s UNC highs. Anything else not asserted as central to evaluations if Mack are lies for mack the glib conman.

Dick Crum was a really good coach with a bland personality that many judged him by. The fact is that he felt hamstrung in recruiting because of the pressure to recruit students and not football players. After watching some of the play-calling in our current game, I'd about give anything to have Crum back.

Mack Brown still shows no decency. I for one am not surprised even a little bit. He is and always has been Mr Uber Ego.

You don't think he showed decency yesterday? It's unfortunate you lack perspective.
The subject is his need to retire, not a player dying from cancer. That subject did not originate yesterday nor could it end yesterday unless he announced his retirement.

Nothing stops in life no matter deaths or hurricanes or anything else we find terrible. The poor ye shall always have among you.

Mack, if he follows his life's major patterns, most likely will milk the fact that a player of his died far too young from cancer to try to stay as HC for many more years. That would be about as indecent in this situation as can be. On the other hand, he could take the very different approach and use that death to re-examine what he is doing and why, and accept that he can never achieve any goals above minimal as HC this late in life but could use his time and fortune to work for things like better health care for student athletes.

dude, I've joined in your criticisms of Mack from time to time, but this is ridiculous. Unless there is some overbearing outward sign of Mack or anyone else exploiting the death of someone close, the humanly decent thing is to forgo any baseless positing or even conjecturing to that effect. Let it go for a day or two.

It's my belief that for all his perceived faults, Mack Brown is a decent human being whose high profile does NOT excuse this kind of reckless attack on his character.

Just STFU and renew your angst next week.

That you chose today to hop back on that horse is what's disturbing.

And your comments are a disgrace. How shitty is your life that you must spread your illness onto others as you do?

One thing is for certain, you won't like my column tomorrow, and I really don't care.
