Yup Luke stepped up big time when we needed it most! Love how aggressively and confidently he plays!

Not against the Davidsons of the world. However, I think anytime Luke plays against teams that are ultra athletic (Indiana, Kentucky, Duke) or not undersized on the interior he will need to learn how to be productive and understand his role. My question with Luke is what exactly will his role be as we face the type teams that we will have to beat to win the national championship.

!!!!!!!!!!!! SMILE !!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!! GO TAR HEELS !!!!!!!!!!!!

Any more questions?

I thought he played very well. IMO, he got jobbed on that offensive foul in the 1st half, that should have been a made basket and an AND1 . .

Its plain to see why Roy had him on the court against Indiana when he was healthy enough to play. Luke has to feel that Roy has confidence in him, and that goes a long way for an athlete's state of mind.

Sorry, but this is still true. He looked over matched vs IU.

Maye gives us exactly what we need. A breather for our bigs, hustle and some scoring, rebounds and D. He is a capable backup who rebounds instinctively, shoots pretty well, and usually does not hurt the team. This is all we need from him.

Hansbrough was not "undersized" or "unathletic." It's a lazy comparison to compare Maye to Hansbrough just because both are white.
Undersized and unathletic is EXACTLY the pre draft scouting report on Hans. He's 6'8"-6'9" and not quick afoot. It's even lazier and weak to assume that whiteness was even a criteria I was considering.
This is from NBA Draft.net:

Weaknesses: At 6’ 8’’ Hansbrough lacks ideal size for the NBA PF position ... Struggles defending taller and more athletic players even at the college level ... Not athletic enough to overcome his size disadvantage to be a standout at the next level ...

sooooooo.........

Love you Mike but it was against Davidson who isn't even as dangerous as some other Wildcat teams in recent memory. The kid is greatly overmatched against a majority of the teams we play this year, especially those in the upper half of ACC and across the top 25.

Do we really have to call someone's post stupid to disagree with it?

Careful reading would indicate that the comparison is only in that they both are undersized and lack athleticism. This is an accurate and intelligent way to refute that peeps with these deficits have a low ceiling! Hans is one of the greats in Tar Heel History and everybody knows this!

Are we really mentioning Hansbrough and Maye in the same sentence? Have you guys lost your damn mind? How stupid.

You're not THAT stupid, but if you can't read for comprehension any better than this, then I may have to reconsider.

I was responding to a post that said the ceiling for an undersized unathletic player is pretty low. I simply pointed out another player that was undersized and unathletic that had a pretty high ceiling. Luke played his butt off, and I'm tired of people denigrating our student athletes.

Add something to the discussion and stop being a dick.

No offense but its still a really really dumb comparison... Luke Mayes ceiling IS pretty low, so your comparison with Hansbrough is nothing but emotional window dressing, sorry.

Different year, same Radar.

Luke Maye and Tyler Hansbrough in the same thread? Next up, Joel Berry = Phil Ford. Oh wait.....

Well weve already had Sterling Manley, the 250th ranked recruit in the 2017 class and a UNC signee, compared to antawn Jamison. Not only compared to him, but was labeled as an "Antawn Jamison clone". So Im pretty much to the point where anything said here doesnt surprise me.

Yeah seriously, enough with these lameass comparisons. Maye is a role player at best who can give us some solid minutes for Hicks, Meeks, and Bradley. Just because he had one good game against mediocre competition doesn't all of a sudden make him that much more valuable.

What's dumb is that peeps can't tell that there was NO comparison between Hans and Maye! Never saw the Antawn/Manley comparison ( a little silly if true), but I bet it was also misread, lol!

Why not just argue the point and not stoop to middle school level tactics; men can disagree while maintaining civility and intelligence.

The level of discourse on here is lower than in the past for sure!

No, dean4 pres started off by saying "Hansbrough says hello" insinuating that Tyler is somehow in the same realm as Luke Maye. So even though he clarified after that he WAS still making the comparison even with the qualifications. Its still a really really dumb "comparison" or "observation" as the two are worlds apart talent wise .. Tyler was a first round draft pick, so using NBA draft net to prove some type of similarity to Luke is beyond absurd. Hes basically saying that Tyler overcame limitations to be a high level player. What he fails to mention is Tyler was the number 5 recruit in the country and was hardly considered unathletic by college standards, which Luke assuredly is.

If you cant see how unintelligent even mentioning the 2 in the same sentence regardless if it was a straight up "comparison" or not its probably because you are resorting to semantics.

You certainly are persistent.

I disagree with everything you just said except the fact that Maye and Hans are on vastly different levels in talent.

And I'm done.

I think it was a joke.. Lets keep it going. What about Kevin Mchale? Tom Chambers? Detlef Schrempf? Rik Smits? Mark Eaton?

People of THR, comparing a low level role player to one of the best to ever play in a Tar Heel uniform makes this board look like a laughingstock. Can we please stop trying to over compensate and look at this with a degree of common sense?

You and I saw that one exactly the same Billy, and I rewound and used the slow-mo to verify. There was no shove and the Davidson defender was neither set, nor squared up.

Luke's per minute figures were pretty doggone strong. Yes, it was Davidson, but we needed every positive thing Luke did to help us to the win and THAT's what matters most.

Butt, let me clarify what I mean when I said "Antoine Jamison clone". I meant that he had some of the same moves around the basket as Jamison. If you look at that open gym video you could clearly see that. I never said he would be as good as Jamison in his career. That open gym video was not much, but I think the kid has a lot of potential. We will have to wait and see. There are many examples of low ranked high school players becomimg superstars in college and the NBA. This kid only played 10 games his junior year and missed the entire AAU circuit this past summer. But yet, Roy offers him a ship after seeing for the first time in an open gym. Lets see how this kid progresses with a healthy senior year in high school. Dennis Rodman and Steph Curry are two examples of players that came out of nowhere to make it big. In fact, Curry's father had to beg Davidson to offer him a ship. Now he is arguebly the best player in the NBA. Not comparing Manley to either of these examples. Just pointing out that Roy saw something and I see something also in this kid. Lets revisit this once the kid completes his senior year and see what his rankings look like at the end of the season. Every fan has an opinion and most may agree with you. If that's the case, than I'm puzzled on why you harp on a minority opinion. Our own Hubert Davis is another example of a player that got a token ship to UNC and surprised everyone.

You didn't seriously just go there did you?
The original post that started this squabble was "How much better can he get? The ceiling on an unathletic, undersized, worker-type player is pretty low." The answer is he CAN get pretty good. While I'm in no way comparing anybody with anybody Larry Bird was pretty slow, undersize, and unathletic. He was also one of the toughest SOB's to ever play and made himself into a Hall of Famer. So the answer to the original question is there really is no ceiling. Some of you folks need to learn to develop basic reading comprehension skills.

Who cares how low his ceiling is or how he will struggle against better more elite players? Why not just say he had a good game and was a big help to us last night. You know, the game we just played and needed him for.

I have no problem saying Luke did very well last night and scarily enough we needed him to. The game and team we were up against is a team Id expect Luke to do well against.

The issue comes where the OP states "any more questions" as if a solid outing against a mediocre Davidson team should just make us all realize Luke Maye is a great player and should play a lot of minutes against top flight competition. Then you have others throwing Hansbroughs name around and well- you shouldnt be surprised with what you get in this thread.
