Manley

John may have been 155lbs.
Henson STILL doesn't have too awful much bulk, but he doesn't have the bone structure to carry much weight either, so.. What the UNC strength and conditioning program churns out every year is nothing short of a miracle for some of these young men!

Manley named MVP of the Jared Sullinger Play by Play Classic this past weekend. Several future D1 prospects participated.

"Sterling Manley (6'11 C / Pickerington Central / 2017): The North Carolina signee looked the part of a future ACC big man on Saturday in leading Pickerington Central to a big win over Northland. Manley controlled the paint, rebounding at a high level and finishing through contact around the rim. All in all, Manley led all scorers and rebounders, finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds. It will be hard for most elite teams in Ohio to take down this Pickerington Central team when Manley is playing at the level that he showcased on Saturday."

Yup. I think with the set backs this young man has faced, nobody has any idea how quickly he can get up to speed. He is like one of those African or Caribbean players that did not play bball as a kid. He has the athleticism and physical gifts, but just needs time on the court against good competition and in the gym to develop as a player. He has some real potential. I trust our coaching staff and I love the persistence he has already shown. He should improve rapidly IMO and should be a starter level contributor by his sophomore year!

IMO, you're right on both counts. I think he's starting to show why Roy didn't hesitate to offer him. Watch the rebound and outlet pass at the beginning of this video.

Nice! I love the body changes between videos. He is showing more definition, stamina, and aggressiveness in the latter ones. Love the multiple jumps and rebounding outside his zone. These and the heads up outlet show he has the instinct and motor to really excel! His footwork looks a good bit better and he is keeping the ball higher already. I'm prepared to really love this kid! (Huffman is already a load!)

I completely agree.

I have been saying for a while now, this kid really needs his conditioning to increase and still believe he needs 10lbs of muscle. I don't care how many stars he has, I am looking more at him as a potential player and think of how he may be able to help us next season. What I see is a small step back from Tony Bradley. Now I know, folks gonna freak at me saying that but before you do consider.

I love Tony's upside but Tony needs a bit more stamina to play for longer stretches and he needs to add some muscle. No matter how many stars Tony came in with, he is not a one & done type of kid, he isn't near ready for that next level, not yet. Right now Tony is a long kid that can make opposing players have to adjust their shot but gets physically moved around a bit. On the offensive end he scores right at the basket, does not show range yet. he is a kid that comes in and gives us 10-15mins of solid play but is not dominating, not right now, I do expect him to be more than this next season.

I see that in Manley, the ability to be a close in scorer, get some rebounds, alter some shots, maybe a bit less than Tony but not that far away. It does not matter to me 1 bit if the kid comes in as a 3star or a 5 star, he is still the same player no matter how one expert compared to another expert looks at him. It is way more about how he fits in with what we do and can he contribute and I think he can on a slightly lower par than Tony has as a freshman. But he could do even more, it is hard to tell until his stamina is improved and we see if he adds bulk in the weight room before the season.

Huffman I think is more physically ready, IMO he is more of a poor man's Bam, not much range as a shooter but a kid that can play strong and physically inside the paint with a solid motor. I think Huffman is a jump hook, step thru, mid range jumper away from being looked at as a 5 star. All moves he can develop with us, not the first time we have seen freshman big men with little range as freshmen. Tony, Ed Davis, Alec Stevson, JMM all come to mind in that aspect. I see him very similar to Alec with a touch better motor.

Just saw where Sterl had 18 and 10 in a big win against an undefeated opponent. He also hit two clutch fts to go ahead by a point with ten seconds left in another game recently. I like!! Keep grinding big man

Here you go. He hit 2 clutch free throws to win the game.

But, but, but he's only an unranked 3* player. He'll never amount to anything.

On a serious note, he knocked down those FT's in a pressure situation but he's going to need to work on that motion. I continue to be very impressed with the progress he's made this year.

Arch, I tell ya.....I would not mess with that motion. He hit 10 of 10 in an earlier game this season. As long as it goes in who cares. He has several other things to work on that would take priority over free throws.

Well, I haven't seen his stats. But if he's shooting them well, don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Okay this excites me for many reasons

He keeps the ball hi
He doesnt gather himself to leap or
Shoot
Very quick
Excellent foot work
Uses his body well to hold off defenders

Doesnt seem to have a soft touch would be my only criticism but looks to me like he should be ranked much higher

Still a little awkward, but boy he has some real potential and his progression is staggering! FT motion is a little weird but effective. He needs to constantly work on increasing agility, stamina/strength, and footwork (not just post moves, but moving the puppies quickly and efficiently) Tire drills/Ladders should be his friend!

Am I the only that doesn't see him playing any defense?? Newark got a bunch of layups with him in the middle of the lane.

Yeah, tough match-up, the Newark C looked like lightning, turns out he's a 6-6 3* forward, committed to Kent St.
From that game it seems Stirling does need to improve his awareness on D, and especially his help D.

It is a bit hard to tell if it is more his mates and he is having to help off more or if he is just lacking in defensive fundamentals, I suspect both but hard to really tell from these clips. I do notice him bite on a lot of shots fakes from smaller guys, I would not call him a defensive intimidator right now. How much of that is stamina related with him playing on tired legs and how much is just lacking in his development is a hard call for me right now. I suspect both are factors, I see what looks to me like some tired legs, kids bite on more when they have tired legs. Both factors are things that once he gets to us can and will be addressed.

A look back at Manley when he committed...some comments. Have always been high on the kid.

No way I was going back through 4 pages, but I still stand behind every post I made!

Love this kid and I'm happy to see him progressing even faster than even the most optimistic among us! I pray the kid has no set backs either through injury or plateauing of his skill development.

Manley will be a load next year and I'm giddy about it!

Yeah, I stand by what I said as well, he has IMO come further than I may have thought he would but the real test comes in ACC play. But I really do like the game by game improvement I see in him and his mid range is really pure!

Steat, did you rehash a thread from Feb to try to prove something? I stand by exactly what I said, he looked bad in that video because he was coming off injury and to expect improvement.

We got improvement.

Dak, I was not directing my comments to anyone in particular. The kid has surprised many folks.
