Overconfidence is our worst enemy. If you are Roy, how do you motivate your team to take State seriously?

Defeatism is their worst enemy. If you are Gott, what kind of game plan gives you your best chance to beat Carolina and to convince your players they can do it?

They were 12-3 before playing us and none of those losses was a bad loss (Creighton on the road; @ Illinois; @ Miami).

Then we clobbered them - starting a 2-9 slide.

It's almost impossible for them to make the NCAA. Maybe if they sweep the regular season and win a couple of games in the ACCT.

OTOH, they have a better shot at the NIT. They need to win nearly all their remaining games. And they need a signature win from either us or UVa. But when you look at that roster, they should have a shot at it.

So . . . their chance to play in post season could be on the line, starting with this game. For guys like Smith and Abu that could make a payday difference or even, in Abu's case, determine whether he has any shot at the next level. Henderson (also a senior unless he has a redshirt year left) may be good enough to play in Europe. So he will want to play well. Dorn has been riding the pine (which seems really stupid to me because he's very good). So he should be up for it if Gott lets him play. Rowan played better than most against us last time, but should still want to do better. Yurtseven has disappointed, but he isn't that bad. More uncertain than unskilled. I imagine Smith has something to prove against Berry because Berry really outplayed him.

Point being that State has something to prove as a team and individually. So even if Gott has lost control of his team, the individual players may come out with fierce determination.

Normally I would think this game was a big time trap for us, in their house, team falling apart, coach to be fired at season end, time for them to rally around the flag and play with nothing to lose to end that losing streak.

Problem is we are coming off that loss to duke, we have had a week of Roy drilling his players, and Roy hates state any way. It is the wrong time for the wuffs to catch us, there is a kid named Berry just itching to wipe out that feeling he had after that last game vs duke and he will face yet again a kid that is projected to go ahead of him in the draft? Nah, maybe closer to 20 this time than 50 but nah, not the time for the wuffies to catch us.

Hope we whip the stink off of them! We are due for a game where we play at a high level for the entire game. This has the feel of just such a game.

Hope we win convincingly and without any further injury!

LOTS of problems at mooou right now. :D

Contain DSJ as best we can and we win. It's his show now. He has stated he will NOT play in the NIT. Ouch if you his coach what do you do?

Maybe Gott will sit him as punishment.

Yeah, contain Smith and don't let Rowan get hot. Their big guys may score some but I don't think they beat us that way. If we can get Smith frustrated early he may check out.

I wonder if Gott is definitely out or if he can save his job if he gets them into post-season play?

Hard to imagine what it would feel like to know you are getting canned no matter what you do. Has to suck. Hard to put your heart into it.

Which is to say that it seems really dumb for the PTB to let him think he has no chance to keep his job. Yet from what the news people are saying, that's what it sounds like.

Might be better to just let him go and let the assistants finish the season.

I believe I heard his contract has a $2 million buy-out. Not too shabby. But I suspect he'd rather keep his job. It will be hard for him to coach again at a high level school - after failing at 2 majors.

I wonder if State would consider hiring Lutz back. The problems seemed to coincide with his departure.

From what I've read the only way he keeps his job is to beat us and make it to the NCAA tournament. That would probably require them to win out and win a couple of games in the ACC tournament. I think the chances of that happening are about as close to zero as you can get. If we blow them out again I'd be willing to bet that he's gone before their next game.
