Newest Yahoo! Article on FBI sting

Yeah, I wasn't making that stuff up. It was quite real and I was actually careful how I phrased it. Truth is Tony's dad was not being very smart during that time and was listening to the wrong people. We can only hope he didn't let it cross into an eligibility issue. Beyond Tony leaving being a stupid move, that was my real concern at the time. I HOPE Tony Sr. is telling the truth now about the details, but I can't say I'm completely confident of that.

Meh not sure one can say Bradley leaving was a stupid move. It's his choice and he was a first round pick. He just came off winning a national championship and was promised a first round selection. Sure, he PROBABLY would've improved his stock if he stayed and averaged like 14 and 10 but can't fault the kid for leaving

Not to mention it opened the door for Luke to have the breakout year that he's had. Things tend to work out the way they should, even if we can't see it at the time.

please let's not start this again...

From USA Today:

In the Yahoo Sports report published Friday morning, the players — or, in some cases, their family members — are listed as receiving impermissible benefits ranging from a $70 lunch to more than $40,000 in loans.

Among those listed on a 2015 balance sheet as receiving five-figure loans while they were in school, as reported by Yahoo Sports: Former Kentucky forward Edrice "Bam" Adebayo, former LSU guard Tim Quarterman, former North Carolina State guard Dennis Smith, former Maryland center Diamond Stone, former Seton Hall forward Isaiah Whitehead and Fultz, who starred at Washington.

Several current players are also listed as having met with Miller's associate, Christian Dawkins, including Wendell Carter of Duke, Kevin Knox of Kentucky and Sexton, who plays for Alabama.

In another paragraph:
The website reports that players, or family members of players, from the following other schools are listed in the documents: Clemson, Creighton, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisville, North Carolina,

I haven't dove too much into the article, but my question is: how much of the evidence actually implicates the schools? Much of the evidence seems to be between individuals and agents without schools participating or seemingly knowing about what took place.

Will say once again, I am not in any way worried that we will have a problem in this investigation !!!

I WELCOME the investigation by the feds, it was a very good day when I first learned of this, it was because after 6yrs of fans of programs that hate us that screamed and dreamed of our being killed, death penalty was their favorite dream, we can now sit back and watch them sweat! And the 3 most vocal fan bases, NC St, Ky, and duke and every one of them should not be nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs!

I have heard that duke has a real problem with BOTH Bagley and Duval, don't know if the feds have them yet but these 2 but I have heard thru the grape vine $150K was what it was going to take to get the Bagley commit and $50k for Duval. I am not saying that is what was paid to them or that was what duke paid to get them and that I have proof of this but those numbers are what was being thrown around and really were not a huge secret. I will say this as well, I do not believe Wendyl Carter's recruitment was dirty and I do not know about Trent, Reddick on the other hand smells and Barrett may as well, Zion maybe family took some, do not think Zion knows.

Brice was not a $100 lunch, it was $100 total bill for 3 people, the agent, Brice, and Bethea. Panties are not in a wad over $33, at most it is a secondary violation deal and Brice will have no problem at all paying back that 33 bucks!

Tip of the iceberg in the investigation, with the FBI involved people will start singing/talking so this will change hourly...

The documents link some of the sport’s biggest current stars – Michigan State’s Miles Bridges, Alabama’s Collin Sexton and Duke’s Wendell Carter – to specific potential extra benefits for either the athletes or their family members. The amounts tied to players in the case range from basic meals to tens of thousands of dollars.

Hmm, potential extra benefits for the athletes or their families....Hmmm....so was it breadsticks or cash? Guess we'll know if Wendell doesn't suit up next week.

As of now, neither Duke or UNC have anything to worry about over these "paid lunches." Duke & UNC names were used as clickbait, but still remains to be seen if anything MORE comes out.

Coach, you seem to be a fair guy as well as a guy I would enjoy to sit down with and share a beer or 3 so don't you take anything I say personally! But honestly, had UNC got so many of the top 10 kids over the last recent years as duke had, wouldn't you think or at least suspect we would very likely be in big time dodo? I mean, if we were in any way involved in this, we REALLY WERE NOT GOOD AT IT! Because how many top 5 have we got over the last bunch of years, I mean wasn't Barnes the last top 5 we got? We have offered a bunch but they said no and went to either you guys or Ky or Kansas.

Let me be clear, kids involved in this FBI stuff were not kids that were going to be in college 3 or 4 yrs, it was the 1&D kid so the agent and shoe company could recoup their investments much sooner. The finger is going to be pointed at the 1&D kids and we have not got those kids, but respectfully, who has...?

I'll stay tuned, but as long as UNC, and even Duke for that matter stay in the lunch category and not in the money received category I just can't see much to go on.

Loans is another area with me anyway. When you start taking cash money EVERYONE knows that is wrong. Lunch come on! We all use to know someone that worked at the local fast food chain and got plenty of free burgers, and we still laugh about it. So an athlete gets a free burger and its the death of an entire program!

Again there is prolly more to come from this, but a pizza (TB Family), and awful Carrabus is crazy. If cash money gift is involved even with UNC I would have to agree with being punished, can't have guys getting money because every D1 blue blood program is telling there guys about the consequences if this . LUNCH PLEASE!

Fair question and I'm not screaming Duke has done nothing wrong. ( I honestly don't know ). The only thing I was pointing out is that the Carter thing (paid lunch) is nothing just like it is with Johnson & Bradley for UNC. The NCAA rules state that is the meal is under $200 the player has to pay it back to a charity of their choice and eligibility is not affected. There are even rumors now circulating on the Duke side that Duke knew about this BEFORE Carter enrolled and it was self-reported and taken care of. (I cannot confirm/deny is that's true).

But as for your question.........as a Duke fan, I would like to hope that Coach K wouldn't put the university or his reputation at risk for some OAD's the last few years of his career. You guys claim that Roy would never do anything like that either and I actually don't think he would and agree.....BUT as a I have stated all along, SOME college coaches will be indicted in this I'm sure, but for must universities it's going to be agents dealing with players/families and I'm not sure how much that can be put on the coach. Do the coaches turn a blind a eye to it? I'm sure it happens, but there's no way K or Roy can know ALL of the things that goes on. Did Roy know about Johnson & Bradley? My guess is no, just like K can't possibly know about all these "meetings" that take place. The NCAA will find secondary violations at every school they look into. I played Division III basketball and they lectured us there and our school still had to report for stupid stuff, so it def goes on everywhere. My hope is that Duke is not found guilty of major violations and if they are, I hope we are punished.

ETA: I am not going to cast any stones until the facts come out and it's probably wise for all fan bases to do the same. It's easy to scream "we didn't do anything, but everyone else did" but in reality none of us know yet and may never know.

At least six players were identified in the documents as receiving payments exceeding $10,000. They include Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr., who received $73,500 in loans from ASM before he played for NC State; Brooklyn Nets shooting guard Isaiah Whitehead, who received more than $37,000 around the time he was a freshman at Seton Hall; and 2017 No. 1 NBA draft pick Markelle Fultz, who received $10,000.00.

Many of these articles are click generators, as mentioned above, and that is why UNC and dook get thrown in the group.
I am curious what Carter's "extra benefits" were.

Well this is turning out to be a fun weekend!

I believe one Roy Williams said his program didn't do anything wrong in the first witch hunt and peeps scoffed! How'd that turn out? I believe one Roy Williams said he was not worried about this one either so......

There is only so much space in Durham to hid your cheese; at some point a rat will poke his head out of the hole!

Very fair reply coach, we are both fans of rival programs, what I would suggest, K is at a point n his career that he is crafting his legacy and sometimes that opens the door for short cuts so maybe he is a bit more accepting of what Capel and James offer up than he would have been a few years back.

End of the day this will give us some ammo to ridicule ky and $tate but wont really hurt them. They’ll have to vacate wins but neither did much with their ineligible players in the seasons in question. And assuming no direct ties to the schools, as the case seems to be, there wont be more than that moving forward.

vacated wins that don’t mean anything...that’s nc state in a nutshell.

Dave, my AAU coach friend told me last week that all four of Duke' commitments for next year will be ruled ineligible, including Zion. I asked him why and he said "Nike shoe transactions". He said when Capel and K tell a recruit that "they are set for life" that means "future shoe deals", not education because many of Duke OADs will not come back and get a Duke degree. This was strictly a rumor. I hate Duke, but not wishing that much bad luck. Doubt this is true, but it made my night!

In the agents leger sheet did anyone, because it is very small print in the article, notice the mention of Brendan Haywood for $351.00?
Everyone else is way more recent. I'm sure that the $351.00 was paid back or to one's favorite charity.

So based on what I read in this thread regarding Tony and Brice, we're fine, right?

As a long time fan of college basketball who has seen the culture change over the years I am looking forward to cleaning up the sport and punishing those that contributed to it's decline in illegal ways. Let ALL schools who participated be punished no matter who or what. At the same time let's find a solution for the one and dones who don't want to be in college in the first place. For the sport to be the sport most of us have loved for many years changes and punishments must come down and I for one am looking forward to finding out the truths, dealing with them appropriately, and moving on.
