NFL 2017-18

Yeah it's hard to stay on top from one year to the next in NFL anymore.

Any truth to the Gruden / TB Bucs rumors? I keep reading that he's already talking to potential assistant coaches.

Seriously though... a few teams (NE, Pitt) have had long runs of success in the last 10-15 years but they are not the norm anymore.* Both have had solid coaching and HOF QB's that have been healthy for most of their careers. When Brady and Ben retire, I expect those two teams to still be good depending on who replaces them. But will they be SB favorites practically every year like they are now? Probably not.

*when I first started watching NFL in the mid 70's (back when I was just a knee high), basically the same teams were division winners year after year: Dolphins, Steelers, Raiders, Cowboys, Vikings, Rams. This was pre free agency days and teams could usually keep their stars.

I don't understand the Jon Gruden thing. He had that great Super Bowl season with Tampa... and that was basically it. People act like he's John Madden or Tom Landry.

I agree. The offense wasn't even that great during the Super Bowl year, but their defense was well above average. That's what won them the Super Bowl.

In 7 seasons w/ TB, Gruden had 4 winning seasons, won 3 division titles, and was 57-55; 3-2 in the playoffs. Like you said - other than the SB season - good but not great. However since then, the Bucs have gone 49-94 in 9 seasons; 2 winning seasons, 0 division titles, 0 playoffs.

NFL head coach reboots have had mixed results: Vermeil worked out for the Rams, but Gibbs part duex was just meh for the redskins. Since Gruden's been away for nearly a decade, I would think the odds aren't favorable.

I wonder what a Bucs fan thinks... what say you @TarHeelNation11 ?

Do you think Garrett is back next year?

yep...someone is gone, probably linehan and dooley, but i bet red jesus stays...jerry believes he’s the guy...the players have never quit and they like him.

i tell fellow dallas fans this all the time...jason believes in “our best beats your best when the execution is great”...there is no scheming with him, it’s norv turner’s offense...if you’ve watched this team play under him, you can call the plays based on formation and motion...and if we’re on the couch calling it, the guys that get paid certainly know it.

i don’t get the gruden thing at all...players hated him and he doesn’t like young players at all...there’s a local media guy here that covered the bucs and he said gruden is a better play-caller than team builder or walk around coach.

if bruce arians gets fired, he’d be perfect with that young team.

Detroit will likely be looking for a new coach as well. I would be shocked if Caldwell comes back.

I give him credit for coaching a team to a SB. I guess I just get this vibe like he's some modern-day Lombardi. Probably just my misinterpretation.

NFL cancels Sunday Night Football this week. Goodell was probably worried about more bad ratings.

Huh? Do you mean the Monday night game, because I don't think they play on Monday night on week 17 so that it wouldn't potentially have a playoff team getting a short week.

Maybe they are not playing any games late on Sunday night either for the same reason?

I do like the way the final week is scheduled though. All the games are Sunday, and 9 of the 16 are afternoon games w/ nearly all of those having division title and / or playoff seeding implications.

Landon Collins calls Eli Apple a "cancer". The Giants definitely have some chemistry issues to resolve before the 2018 season begins.

Let's also get rid of that stupid-ass rule where if you fumble just outside the end zone and the ball goes through the end zone, they give the opposing team the ball at your 20.... when they NEVER had possession of the ball.

I love that rule!

I don't mind that rule. It's punishes the offense for the fumble.
