OOTB Carolina football discussion thread

So no thoughts on this from @TarHeelNation11 @Raising Heel and @gteeitup? I guess @uncboy10 and I are the only two fans left.
I'm still waiting for UNC to confirm it (even though I know it's true) because it's still hard to believe. I'm thrilled with the hire, but I'm a bit more pessimistic than most on how much this will help us.

At some point, we need to put some coaches on staff besides Gunter Brewer that know how to coach and develop players. We seem to be a coaching staff of excellent recruiters who are meh (at best) at "coachin' 'em up."

But we shall see. If Thig can help is get 1-3 more in-state studs per year, it will be worth it. Sure wish he had been on staff this past year though. The 2019 N.C. class isn't as strong as the 2018 class IMO.

Are there any TN recruits we might try to flip to us now that he's on staff?

Unfortunately we won't see the bulk of the benefit of Thig being hired until somewhere around 2020, assuming he sticks around that long. If you're playing the long game then that's probably our next shot at a big breakthrough season anyways, so maybe we get lucky and this all times up nicely...

Also completely agree with THN. We need coaches who specialize in teaching fundamentals and player development. That and a new OC

I Forget the stat exactly, maybe @Raising Heel does, but its something like this, 10 of last 12 natl champs have had top ten defenses. And every single one had had at least one top 5 recruiting class on their roster. Most have had multiple. Anyway i dont see us getting over the 8 win hump any time soon without major def improvement.

at this point, with this head coach and his “philosophy”, i’m from missouri, so show me.

will thigpen be able to help get the right kids to play well enough in this system, who knows...will the possible bump in recruiting help bring bigger athletic lb’s, better edge guys, or a space eater inside to help everyone?

i tend to believe it’s too hard to win with this system over a period of time...i hope he in his territory and deke in georgia, can change that.

What system are you referring to? Most of the top programs in the country now run a similar offensive scheme to what Fed runs, just with differing points of emphasis.

The defensive system seems to be up the DC. Koenning and Chizik were both allowed to run their own defensive schemes. We just haven't recruited at a high enough level or developed talent well enough.

Fed made a good point during the coach's discussion during the Bama vs Clemson game. Those guys play hard. And they practice hard. They play and practice hard because they have to play and practice hard to keep their spot on the field. The consistent high level recruiting means top level talent, AND depth which means that guys develop more because they're pushed by the competition at their position.

the different principles on offense are one point...i've talked about it at great lengths in other threads...i promised not to do it anymore after this year, mostly because he was so limited with personnel.

i hate that it appears he scripts plays and that it doesn't matter what defense they are playing, what the weather conditions are, or who is healthy.

i hate that he says he doesn't care about balance until the end of the year...that makes no sense to me.

i don't like his in-game play-calling, never have...he adjusted this year when he finally faced adversity.

finally, maybe, is that d-coordinators hate working for coaches that run this...i've heard them in interviews...it doesn't matter what their scheme is on defense, they can't be physical during the week in practice...you better have elite 2-deep talent to hold on during games, only a handful or programs have it.

that's a condensed version.

Those are mostly fair criticisms. Fed is still a young HC though. Hopefully we see the play calling and personnel management/development improve.

I watched a good chunk of the FCS Championship today before Carolina's bball game (and then flipped back to it once I couldn't stand seeing Carolina get beat to loose balls or fail to rebound the ball any longer) and I have to say, I want zero part of Mike Houston ever coaching Carolina. Y'all can tell me all you want that he's a winner and that Carolina is his dream job, but that dude is not ready to coach for a P5 program. Not even close.

I would say that on Blitz, but I swore off that board until next August.

Who wins the runner-up game tonight?

Agreed, but it's making the stadium a lot smaller. I didn't think it would reduce capacity by that much. Of course, it's not like we needed the seats anyway.
Oh for sure it's a hit to the ego, but to be honest....... we needed that stadium capacity reduction. I HATE that we needed it, but I'm a realist, and we do.

Here's to hoping we get really good soon, and need an expansion.

Where would the expansion come from at this point though? The way the stadium is set up there's not much you could do.

Cheerleaders sitting on your lap.

In all seriousness, they could build up the upper bowl higher along both sidelines, if they really wanted to.

But honestly, we don't need an expansion. Our fanbase blows and we are a much smaller school than our flagship peers. It is what it is unfortunately. It's not like we'll be the only Power 5 school with capacity in the 50,000s. Oregon's is the same way.

Long overdue. This will be a dramatic (but awesome) change to the Kenan gameday experience.
Thank goodness. I am now officially excited about the 2018 season.

I'm wondering how this will affect seat assignments for current Rams Club season ticket holders. Are we going to have to go through another seat selection process? I thought that wasn't supposed to happen again until next year, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, if they're decreasing the number of seats in each section, surely somebody is going to be displaced. Right?

Seat selection was already gonna take place this spring. I'm wondering if they'll even have seat numbers ready for this process?

(Hard to believe it's already been 3 years since we picked our seats. May need to send you up on another espionage mission to scope out the lay of the land.. er seats.)

You're right. I lost a year somewhere but our first season with seats together was the 11-3 campaign.

I love where our seats are located and would gladly select them again if they're available. Just have to sell a kidney first.

And this will be the first year I have to pay full price for my tickets so that's good.

I am definitely excited about this and hope it improves the atmosphere. I wonder if it affects the ticket allotment to visiting schools at all. I would love to see less red at a certain game every 2 years.

Unfortunately, the amount of State fans in the stands every other year has nothing to do with State's allotment :(

But I know you know that.

Yeah, I do, but maybe it will decrease the amount of unused tickets out there too and that would be a big help.

Unc football fans did not need any more incentive to sit down during their game. I vote we just do away with the bleachers entirely so you have to stand up the whole game. And introduce security that kicks you out if you aren't loud enough.

Lol true. They probably just wanted the seat backs so the empty spots in the stadium wont stand out so badly on tv...
All joking aside, that's a real benefit. The empty metal bleachers were bad enough, but the glare of the sun made them look even worse. At least this way there will still be a Carolina blue hue to the stadium even when fans don't show.

Hate it for him but Hatton is making the right decision. Too much of a risk to his long-term health. It would be cool if he could stay on as an assistant and finish his college career still a part of the football program. I wish him all the best.

I was already concerned about the offensive line before this. We have continued to recruit well there, but IMHO that group has under-performed relative to their rankings under Kap. Now we're going to be relying on a number of young guys next season.

Shot in the dark:

LT - William Sweet (Jr.)
LG - Nick Polino (Jr.)
C - Jay-Jay McCargo (So.)
RG - Mason Veal (Jr.)
RT - Charlie Heck (Jr.)

The interior of that line is pretty inexperienced, and we'll be relying on even younger players as backups.

More teams are relying on really young studs in the trenches, Louisville's lt last yr who was highly recruited, but did really well for a true frosh. So my fingers are crossed for Melton at guard, just going off hs play.

Didn’t AJ note several of the young guys on OLine looked to be studs and the staff refused to burn their RSs?
