So how many years is it going to take for Italy to recover from this? They are shutting down everything but grocery stores and pharmacies. They might be screwed for a decade. It's hard to just start an economy back up.
Tourism is a gigantic part of their economy and I'd imagine that won't pick back up for a long time.
It's going to be really, really bad for them. With schools closed, you are looking at basic education being delayed. This is going to be a huge problem for them. Not sure how they recover anytime soon.
The term "next Great Depression" is being used in financial circles.

Agreed, it was colossally bad and yet another reminder why he should not be president.

I'm not sure Italy will be able to avoid it since they are shutting down the country. I could easily see an extended depression for them.
Well... yeah, they probably will improve... AFTER it's all over.
As bad as this will be, there are some things to consider that are more optimistic. This is unprecedented, for the most part, at least in modern times. The cause of all of this is due to a virus. It's not because of people greedily bundling shit mortgages for a decade and selling them and forgetting that the insurance company has no way to cover the losses... etc..
When this finally runs its course, there will be lessons learned from all of it. If Apple wants ANY sales, maybe they'll make facilities that manufacture products in more than one country and pay living wages rather than lose it all. Maybe the USA chooses to manufacture at least some necessities here rather than having no access to them simply because profits are higher by doing it the current way.
Once this bug is done, things will start to get better.
I feel an extreme amount of empathy for the Italians. Such a wonderful country and people.
That's not feasible here for several reasons. It would also absolutely kill the economy. Italy is beyond screwed for a long time.
I'm interested to see if the election is pushed back. At some point these primaries will be pushed back. That will mean either the dems have less time to campaign in the general election or they reschedule the election.
Someone has to be the spokesman for the group. I dont see any of you schmucks lining up the invites to this board. I kinda liked his poast on the virus. Defensive schemes or blown assist.
I think this line of thinking is accurate, and is referred to as taking the white pill. (I don't care for the racial connotation of that, FWIW).
Whether one agrees or disagrees, I believe once things settle down, DJT will hammer the F out of bringing things manufactured in China, back to USA - or as a second resort, back to a country that isn't our most dangerous enemy. Nothing China does - or has done economically or during this virus pandemic - is in the interest of the US or of any country except China - even to the level of being a "pretty good citizen of the globe". The atrocities that Chinese govt have committed for many decades: economically, human rights abuse, torture, theft of security secrets, theft of intellectual business information.....the list goes on and on....
it is just sickening and reprehensible how pols from the USA (and corporate leaders, too) - have turned a blind eye to all the evils of Communist China - in the name of worshipping the almighty dollar..... (LeBron / NBA shmucks - I'm looking at you, too.....)
ETA: I think there might be a step back from being a global economy and having ease of travel for everyone globally. USA will become more nationalistic in nature....and I know nationalist is loaded with a lot of bad connotations (I think it is at the root of the term "Nazi") - but I wouldn't mind us at least looking to see what we can do to create things vital to our survival (antibiotics, vaccines) locally, or at least from an ally - even if it costs a lot more than making it in China.
I do wish Trump would leave the Fed alone and let things play-out for a while and realize that he can't have a Stock Market picnic while this is happening. Commerce is not going to be as high of a priority while America is experiencing this bug's chapter in our lives.
“Nazi” was actually a derogatory term and a shortening of the organization “National Socialist Workers Party” in Germany. People used it originally to piss them off haha but the term stuck.
It's funny you mention that. I was just asking a friend yesterday if he knew whether it was a German word or an acronym. He said an acronym, I suppose using the German words for what you put above.
Bernie seemed to be in favor of delaying the primary amidst Coronavirus concerns... I wonder if he and his supporters would recommend delaying the general election for the same reasons?
Seems to me like Bernie would benefit from not delaying the primary. Older people are being told that if they even look outside they are going to die. Those voters are more likely to support Biden, so in theory that means less of a group that Biden will win.
Agreed - I guess he and his team were either excuse making or just hoping to have anything at all stop the steamroller that is Joe Biden rolling over them right now, and figured if they could call a TO they might be able to get their ducks back in a row.

Well... when things are going well and it's basically running on autopilot, it's not that hard.
This shutdown is unprecedented. Trump is just a professional celebrity. Even the most qualified person would be severely tested to try to navigate through this situation and there's no map.
Yeah, Biden is going to win the nomination. The only chance Bernie has is to get a brokered convention and hope that Biden continues to show that he has some health issues.

Blaming the virus on him is about as reasonable as giving him credit for the economy before the downturn.
Biden pretty much sounded like trump at the last debate. When Bernie called him out for trying to cut Medicare and social security, he just straight up lied about it, despite the fact that the videos are all over the internet. Then when Bernie called him out for using super pacs he accused Bernie of having 9 super pacs. It amazes me that anyone could support him.
Yes because he’s commited to doing anything in his power to prevent Trump from winning again. But it won’t matter. Biden is possibly an even worse candidate than Hillary.
The markets are not believing him, or believing in him, that's for sure.
Trump is a great professional celebrity. He has the ability to get attention, but in a situation like this... he's the last person who can gain the trust of a lot of the people and institutions that are desperately needing reassurance. They just don't believe in him. I have a feeling that all he will have left is his most stubborn base who have personally attached themselves to his persona. He'll get the diehards in the South and rural states. But, he's going to lose bigly.
If we go into a recession, Biden has a good chance of winning. Then whoever his VP is will be president.
