OOTB's Political Thread . ..

What are the odds that Biden gets replaced with Hillary? Sounds crazy but at this point it wouldn't even surprise me.

Probably zero. They've made it clear they just want her to shut up and go away. If they are going to make a switch, I think they need to do it by the end of the month though.

Republicans know how to market their candidates. Democrats... not so much. I'd say Obama was the exception, not the rule.

I hear Justin Amash is possibly going to be the Libertarian candidate. I will have someone to vote for, at least.

I think it's more about them marketing the party and not a specific candidate. Republicans do a good job of rallying the troops. Making sure that everyone votes for the Republican candidate no matter what. Dems aren't as good as that. They are fractured. If you don't vote for their dem choice, then they take their ball and go home.

Why would you have someone do a town hall with the presumptive nominee if you want her to shut up and go away?

PR maybe? There have been several articles about people in the party wanting her to shut up about the 2016 election. No one was happy about that documentary that she released on Hulu. If they replace Biden, it will have to be with Bernie. If they don't, then all hell will break loose for them.

I hadn’t heard about the documentary. I know there’s people who want her to go away, but the town hall thing seemed odd to me. Almost like a chance to show how sharp she looks next to Biden. And he literally fell asleep so if that was the plan then it worked. She’s a lot of things, but stupid isn’t one of them. If there’s an in, the Clintons will find it. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to find out they have serious dirt on major players in the DNC.

I was going to say the same thing about Bernie. It would be straight up undemocratic to give it to anyone else.

Unfortunately that would mean 8 years of trump.
Have you taken a look at this country's governmental processes and institutions? Of course you have. Only the USA would have been idiotic enough to allow itself to become such a shit-show that it would elect former actors into its highest office.

America doesn't elect its best-and-brightest. It elects the shiniest toys.

I think most people, regardless of their political views would agree our political system is broken. Unfortunately we can’t agree on how to fix it so nothing ever gets done.

Well... fixing it really isn't an option. The country is owned. We have owners. Best to try and accept that and learnt o operate within those parameters. This bullshit about inalienable rights is a fantasy. We have some privileges, if we don't get too far out of line.

Fixing it would require a new kind of revolution and things aren't bad enough... yet... for that.

It is an option. It hasn’t always been legal to buy off politicians. I’m not saying it would be easy, but it is possible to move to publicly funded elections. Saying we are owned is an over exaggeration. The issue is that the incentives for politicians don’t line up with doing what is best for the average American, because the average American isn’t the person funding their campaign or giving them a cushy job after they leave office.

I don't know. The way it's set up now, if you get elected to congress, you won the lottery. I don't know why they would ever legislate that out of existence on their own.

That's the major challenge. We've got to elect enough people who are ethically opposed to the current system. Congress needs to be filled with people who care more about their constituents than themselves. Unfortunately those kinds of people rarely run for office, and its even more rare for them to actually win.

You say major challenge I say complete impossibility.

I will have someone to vote for, at least.

Same as 4 years ago, my write-in vote is the most qualified candidate...

A president who legitimizes right wing militant radicals is extremely dangerous. I’m sure the usual suspects will make jokes to deflect, but those kinds of situations are one wrong move away from turning into a massacre.
Too rich. Would a 'wrong move' be say, an organized bunch of liberal agitators swarming in with the express intent of provoking such a confrontation? The saltiness of their tears when they get exactly what they ask for is delicious. That is, they would be except for the fact that their participation is of course undertaken innocently (that's the joke).

And to the liberal mind, or what passes for one...if you aren't presently in the act of condemning, you are condoning (just as when if you aren't giving your stuff away or letting it be taken, you are stealing). It's a strange place, the liberal mind. In that bizarre place where logic and reason are treated with disdain, no twisting of reality is too preposterous when an opportunity to say 'orange man bad' comes up.

Let me bring my assault rifle to my nonviolent protest.

Your logic is breathtaking.

That’s cool as long as you’re white. Otherwise, it would make you an armed agitator that’s wants to incite violence.

Does turning everything into a racist comparison do it for you? If the "crackers" was beating people up, I would call them out. I love how the younger generation is so sensitive.

Bearing arms and protest are 2 staples of this country. People protest in different ways. As long as they are not violent, and within the context of the law then they have to right to do so.
It's a right as long as it's "within the context of the law." Which means, it's not a "right." It's a privilege, on a good day.

Black children have been shot for playing with toys guns and unarmed black men being shot has become a regular occrrence in this country. So yeah, I have little doubt that if BLM or the panthers showed up to the state House with assault rifles then there would be a very different reaction.

I know we have race issues in this country. But what has this to do with people protesting? Do you think ANTiFa would play nice? Again, if they are in the context of the law, they (white, black, green, yellow) have the right to do so.
Honestly, I am surprised its legal.

The point is that this type of protesting is only tolerated if the protestors are white. If a bunch of armed black men showed up at the state house they likely would have been shot or arrested. I think we all pretty much know that is the case. So I'm glad to hear that you think all people should have equal rights. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way in practice.

And it absolutely shouldn't be legal. Its fukkin insane that people think it's appropriate for people to carry AR-15's during a protest. It's even more insane that the POTUS praises them, and tells the '2nd amendment people' that they should do something about it if he loses the election.

I read that most states don’t allow weapons on state capitol grounds. However The local law admitted no such law exists in Michigan. I don’t understand why people are trying to tie in gun rights to covid protests. Not only that to wear full tactical gear and display military style weaponry in doing so. I guess some boys never grow out of playing army.

I think its crazy that any weapon is allow on or near any capitol building. I have an AR and would never carry it in public, much less a protest due to this kind of attention. My pistol is a different story since I have CC and use it for personal protection.

I am not saying these people arent crazy, nor am I saying that blacks would have a harder time in the same scenario. But if its legal, then they still have that right. I have said before, this country is broken morally, and will never be fixed. We can't fix racism because all sides will never allow it. I guess its the price of democracy. We as individuals can do something about it though. But individuals are allowed to think for themselves. This is why it always becomes an endless debate. In a socialist or communist society, this would not happen, or ended very differently.
