...and these guys just can't make it easy on us, huh?

I'll go ahead and start with a couple of positives:

- We did come out with urgency and effort --- which needs to be the case every game --- and acted like we were gonna blow it open for a while.

- I liked that we started a bigger lineup, and I like that we mixed in 30 and 40 traps at different level (!)

- It was good to see Wash with the early blocks and confidently knocking down a 3, but again, the latter needs to be a regular thing.

- on the other side of things, I was really disappointed in our execution of Zone Offense. Cuse plays their 2-3 so high it's more like a 2-2-1, which means SHORT CORNER is your key! But the guys running pivot were hesitating on what needs to be a touch-pass there --- sheesh --- we missed that over and over. Yeah, we got a couple of floaters from the pivot, but TBH, knocking down 3s bailed us out of some clunky possessions. Fortunately, Hubert adjusted in crunch time letting EC go to work in the pivot to make the looks smoother.

- On the schizoid side, I have a new nickname for our Mr. Withers --- "Harvey Dent". For those who don't get the Batman reference, that's the alter-ego of "Two-Face". I mean, heat-checking from 3 but followed by standing straight up and letting a guy drive right by him, or making uber-athletic finshes but not having a clue in the Zone Offense pivot, or getting a huge late block-and-board, but followed immediately by throwing it away and fouling for an and-1 (when RJ was standing wide open beside him)

- Relieved to see Ian rediscover his offense after hitting that wall, but yikes at his missed interceptor rotations in 32. Come on guys --- if we want Hubert to keep calling scrambles we need to EXECUTE!

- And Eliot, don't go back to falling for those bump-reaction fouls that Cuse's Guard was baiting you with. Yeah, you got him back when it counted (see below), but we need you on the floor, son.

- And come on, guys --- WTF with the missed FTs? I mean, Groover and his clone and their sidekick did us no favors (only the late on-purpose fouls evened up the raw attempt #s), but when you do get to the line, take advantage!

- Finally, we did some nice things to not let this one get away. On that note, Drake worked in some key plays, including a big block and that late transition dime to Harvey. And, when it got too close for comfort up only 2 with 45 seconds left, Eliot's pick-up-your-jock-strap number for that lay-up was the clutch dagger that got if off a 1-possession game for the duration, and then we got it in RJ's hands for the late foul-fest to seal it (and BTW, I noticed RJ had his thumb-wrap off --- hopefully a good sign moving forward).

Anyway, we survived a game in which a 58% and 71% foul shooter together would knock down 18/19 FTs, as well as more than our share of self-inflicted give-backs. When every game is a must-win, we need to take the good and move forward and clean up the bad. And PLEASE Hubert, keep being more multiple! (I mean, we can hope, right?)...:oops:

Hopefully, we improve our free throw shooting. In a stretch of must-win games, it will be critical.
Elliot, young man…your presence on the floor is also critical. Yeah, you’re emotionally invested in
winning and trying to set up points for your teammates, but you cannot help by riding the pine. Stop setting
yourself up for whistles. Lord knows, the stripes are already primed to tweet every time you bump someone.
Think, McFly!!
OTOH, pick-up-your-jockstrap does aptly describe that sweet late layup.

A lot to like in this game, a lot that I have been wanting to see began in this game. Right off the top, the off ball movement was much better, the scoring was spread around and players were engaged. Long stretches of either RJ or Cadeau at the point while the other was on the bench. Been saying for a while now, one of them needs to sit more, just how the math works. The 2 tiny back court has been to much a problem when added to a small front court, especially with the lack of movement off the ball we have had. So I was glad to see JWit get the start, gives us more up front beef and allows Drake more time at the 3 where he is more effective. I may have missed it but I don't recall RJ going in to hero mode this game, played well within himself and took what the offense gave him, trusted his mates and they rewarded him for it.

I like that we now see at least some form of multiple defense, was that actual communication I saw out there? Sorry but every time I see us go up against a guy like Lampkin I get a little pissed off, yet another one of those big ole front court guys that we didn't look at in the last portal that the cuse got cheap, that we could have used. He was just able to bully us, to big for Lubin or JWash to contain and JWit may have done the best job on him but the foul calls came.

Nice to see JWit erupt, caution however, he is really streaky, can not let him fall to much in love with those treys because he can shoot you in to some holes if not careful. Same with Jack, get them off to good starts thou and they can really come on strong. This may well have been RJ's best game of this season, he seemed more in control of running the offense than going 1 on 1, that is what I have been wanting to see from him. And let's not forget Cadeau, this game to me changed when we were up 2 to with the ball late and Cadeau drove for that lay in, when he ht that I began to feel we were going to win this one, that after hitting a big jumper at the foul line the trip before.

We did struggle some going against that zone but we moved the ball and feet moved, more motion offense than that standing around nonsense., Thank you, BTW Jalen, you took a trey jumper, you to good a shooter to not take more of those. For the team he has right now, I can't scream about Hubert's decisions in this one, was it all I wanted to see, no, but it was in a much better direction, it is something we should be able to build on.

That also points up something that, as you know, many of us have been calling for, i.e, that If we're gonna run a crunch-time iso vs Man, then it NEEDS to be with EC. Nobody can stay in front of him and if they bring help, chances are he'll find the open man.

As we know, Hubert has always defaulted to RJ in those situations, so it was a revelation to get our wish. Now, I confess that I didn't glance at the bench in advance (as I usually do) so I can't tell ya for sure Hubert called that one, but I'm gonna give him credit nonetheless, given his propensity for called actions ;)

Seriously though, that needs to be the default going forward.

Elliot at the reins is our best option; he showed confidence in the pull-up and the plant/spin drive-by.
He (obviously) has to hit free throws more consistently. All the guys do.
The other offensive set of pass the ball around the horn til an open three is available works
great when you hit half of them, not so great when you miss 75% of them and we have seen both this season.
Six ACC games left, please put the ball in his hands.

😉 Hey, EC, not so much mustard on some of those passes, IYKWIM.
