...and I pretty much had most of this written by the under-8 of the 1st half --- and then the 2nd half proved my point.

- By the 3rd possession it was painfully clear that they had scouted and were anticipating all of our predictable horizontal actions. Their guys were simply ignoring anything vertical and opening up to passing lanes.

- And when we got 1/5 and/or 5/1 mismatches on like 8 different occasions before the under-8, instead of letting those guys take advantage, we've got other guys running around in semi-crcles or crossing the ball-handler and getting in the damn way. For pete's sake, opponents can see our "zoom" actions coming down I-40.

- But there's a LARGER question: Why in the hell would you start our smallest iineup against the biggest team in D1 unless you're gonna PRESS? And why use mid-post doubles on Flagg when it just opens up shooters without stressing the ball to any degree?

- Those questions were made even more poignant when, in the second half --- LO AND BEHOLD --- we legitmately went MULTIPLE, mixing Zone and 40, and mostly successfully. Of course we stubbornly waited until precious minutes had ticked off. Still, we beat them by 5 in the 2nd half and believe me, dook was NOT coasting. I'm not into moral victories --- I'm into LEARNING --- and all I can hope is the staff damn well learned something for the rest of the schedule.

- We also eventually played our best offensive ball late when we started using VERTICAL initiations from the key. Some of the actions that got Drake in space for a vertical drive, for example, worked very well.

- But back to the defensive end, look, us trying to be stubbornly in Man vs dook is a loser. For one thing, bless his heart, there is nobody in the dook rotation that RJ can guard --- and hoo-buddy, they exploited that every chance they got.

- Finally, when I wrote that pissed-off abbreviated post after PItt, I neglected to mention the point that this team thus far has had NO IDENTITY. I did notice that @gunslingerdick picked up my slack in the replies and he was spot on. And we've also got Frosh wings making Frosh mistakes on top of our size deficit. My point is, we at least got a glimpse of what this team's identitiy SHOULD be --- be MULTPILE and aggressive from the tip, and on offense, stop with all the called weaves, etc and let play-makers make plays TOWARD the rim. Moreover, make teams guard US in the inevitable mismatches we can create.

- Oh, and one last thing --- once we started showing a defensive identity, ain't it amazing how suddenly the size deficit didn't matter quite as much when we weren't a damn SITTING DUCK anymore, huh? And I'm gonna tell ya, Wash and Lubin started holding their own in the trenches. And I'm also gonna mention that Tyson acquitted himself quite well, and helped mitigate the size thing a bit.

Anyway, there it is. This OUGHTA be a epiphany moment for Hubert. I mean, geez, you gotta know we're starting any game at HIS with a 10-point deficit just from the "treatment" we're gonna get (and did), so why put yourself at a further disadvantage by playing right into their strengths? Fact is, we have personnel who were MADE to be multiple and aggressive --- NOT to be stuck in Man defense. On the other end it's about NOT making ourselves predictable and easy to guard. Stop dicking around horizontally on the perimeter and stress the damn rim. We've got a week to learn. Will we? We'll see...

Great synopsis, I’ll just say this… the 4 guard lineup is not working. Putting Seth on Cooper tells me all I need to know about this coaching staff.

Hubert’s had some galaxy brain strategies in some of the biggest games this season that probably put his team at a significant disadvantage.

Deciding to play drop coverage and going under ball screens against Alabama was certainly a choice.

And while Powell isn’t in the same class as Flagg, that’s probably a better matchup than the 4 guards. I also thought doubling Flagg was a weird choice. That guy is the most skilled wing/big in the country.

Just some odd decisions all season. I don’t take any of the second half stuff with any significance. That’s benefit of the doubt this team hasn’t earned all season.

I also barfed at Cadeau attempting a 15 foot left handed bounce pass off the dribble on Seth’s backdoor dive from the strongside corner. The decision to make that pass was bad. Seth also has 0 shot credibility. Run that action to someone who can actually shoot the basketball. It was really early but that play stuck with me for some reason.

Hey G- have to say seeing multiple Defenses and not just sitting in man and letting it happen almost brought a tear this ol fan’s eye. I have been begging for them to at least give em the change up for the last 20 yrs really, but certainly the last 5! Actually it allows us to play bigger and not expose guys with a lateral quickness deficit. You could see Duke stop and have to think about how to attack what was in front of them. I hope it’s a harbinger of things to come. It might not change the arch of this season, but hopefully it becomes more the norm! Tough night but a little bit of a silver lining?

Of course you don't. And for the record, that pass was a called timing play we have run successfully this season. The fact Flagg just opened up and waited for it should have been the first indication they were anticipating our plays.

I also should say that I’m not solely blaming Hubert. This has been a failure from coach to the last man on the roster.

I’m probably being a bit reactionary to this game specifically. The reality is this team was at such a disadvantage compare to Duke’s size and length. But it’s disappointing it got to this point.

I personally don’t see anything changing. This team just doesn’t fit very well together and doesn’t have a ton of versatility. But they still have opportunities ahead of them so hopefully the find something over the next coming days.

How this team can & should have beat Kansas & can't compete against dook or win vs wf or many other teams is beyond me .. its coaching & chemistry issues !

That was a complete and thorough beat down. It's hard to lose to your rival by 17, and still come away, saying without a doubt, that it wasn't even that close. The length advantage of the dookies was glaring, especially on dee. Our guards were totally locked up, keeping RJ from looks, and EC had a really rough night at the office with 5 turnovers and only 3 assists, a couple others TO's that dook just fumbled out of bounds after the take away was made. Ian was locked up as well. Length at every position, had the handcuffs very tight on our guards.

They shot 50% from 3, got almost twice as many free throw attempts, went 21‐25 from there. Just a smack down all around.

I had zero confidence coming into this game and expected something like this was going to happen.
Today's game must be this team's line in the sand moment.
I think this team needs to win 8 out of their last 9 games to make the ncaat.
That is not impossible with how bad the ACC is this year.
Season begins next Sat with game 1 vs Pitt at home, then quick turnaround on Big Mon vs Clemson. Win these two games and then get on a little run before seeing Dook again to finish the season.
I know I have not seen much to be optimistic about thus far, but I just have a little feeling that Carolina is going to win the next 8 games.

Many excellent comments so far. I don’t know exactly why, but l agree with @tarwhiz, 8 out of 9
is possible; l’ll go one step further: if Hubert follows @gary-7’s suggestion and gets seriously multiple on defense,
we could win all nine. OK, my brothers disagree, my wife disagrees, my nephew is oiling his mitt
for baseball season and disagrees, but….

1) fewer turnovers + more made shots + a defensive attitude = victories
2) You saw some positive changes that were successful, Hubert. Stick with them.

Hubert keeps staring this small lineup…Have we won a game with it yet…This program is lost right now…

We've got a week to learn. Will we? We'll see...

Thanks, as always for the assessment, but I think I can answer your question confidently: no.

I hope Bubba and UNC leadership is starting, or has already started, to make a plan to move on from this staff.

I disagree with the both of us in my head 😆

I think the idea that the solutions are on this roster just isn't the case. Some zone may have appeared to work in the 2H, but zone isn't realistic for a team that goes 6'0", 5'11", and 6'4". Unless that's more of an attacking zone. Also, this team is tiny and bad in the frontcourt so you expose yourself to offensive rebounding.

Regarding high octane pressure all game... Also, this team isn't deep right? When they start 4 guards, they don't have a backup guard on the bench, lol. Then factor in that Elliot Cadeau is averaging 5 fouls/40 minutes against top 100 opponents. If you can absolutely guarantee that Cadeau won't get into foul trouble, then maybe but then this team has no depth. I don't know how sustainable that is.

Also, this team ranks 317th in the country in defensive turnover percentage. I think it's expecting a lot for that to suddenly change.

It's also 20+ games into the season. You're not going to reinvent the wheel and completely alter the way this team plays unless they have a talent upgrade on the bench somewhere (like when PJ Hairston started over Desmond Hubert). That doesn't exist on this team. They've probably practiced believing in their system for 20+ games and they're not going to change everything because they have 4-5 days off.

Maybe they can implement some of those things more, but they're trapped because they're really small and quite frankly, they're not good. There's only so much you can do when you're not any good.

Don't get me wrong. I think they can close the season stacking some wins because they get Pitt and Duke at home. Maybe they shoot the ball well at Clemson. There are paths where this team can win 7 or 8 games to close out the reg season IMO. It's not going to change my overall feelings about this team. They are what they are. To expect sudden consistency and quality is rather hopeful.

Credit to you being more optimistic than I am. It's a resolution I've already given up on in 2025, lol.

This game, as I shared in the game thread, encapsulated in the very last bucket duke got to end the first half. 6'9", #1 pick over all in the next NBA draft hits a jump shot over 5'11" RJ Davis. Duke started 2 6'6" guards, their PG looked like a NFL line backer, a sweet shooting 6'7" projected as a lotto in the next draft in K'snipple, 6'9" #1 pick in the next NBA draft, and Malisquatch at what 7'2 and can hang on the rim while standing flat footed on the court? That is insane length, not just a length advantage at every single position but huge length advantage at each position. Just have to realize how hard that is to contend with.

Your passing lanes shrink, they left Malasquatch in the paint choking off drives. The biggest team in NCAA vs one of the smallest teams in the NCAA, size matter a heck of a lot. I am actually more proud that those kids stood up and fought their behinds off in that second half. I actually saw Hubert do something I did not expect, we actually went to a zone, we actually used multiple defenses I can't recall Hubert having us in a zone since he has been head coach. That was a bit of an amazing half time adjustment, maybe Hubert is beginning to learn.

Team looked intimidated in that first half but they came out and played hard in that second half. It is one thing to watch duke play on tape but UNC simply can not replicate it to be able to be prepared for it, you can only experience it and experience it we darn sure did. I felt going in we were in for a butt kicking experience, I actually felt we would get beat by 30+, it is just a game of match ups and this is the worst match up we could face.

Now I get it, this game feeds to frenzy of the Hubert must go movement, some may not like my not being as upset over this or this game as they are. I am simply looking for positives, looking for things, even this late in the season that show me that we are moving more in a positive direction. Now if we can take how we played and build on it against Pitt, we can take that game. My concern is we have been in this position to build on a tough nose second half come back before only to come out un-prepared in the next.

Thank your you Dsouthr for breaking the game down so people who have never played organized basketball have a better idea of some of the ins and outs on things most likely people don’t even think about or consider and only look at the final score and nothing else.

You are one of few people who posted during the game about the giant mismatch that Carolina faced at Cameron when 4 of its starters aside from Lubin were smaller in height than the smallest Blue Devil starter who stood at 6’5…

Over and over again Knueppel the Duke McDonalds all American freshman posted up senior RJ Davis and easily shot over RJ and scored or got fouled. 24 points later the rout was on.

The mismatch in size was at every position and Carolina had no one size wise that Had a chance defensively against Flagg and Maluach but I will point out Lubin might have had his best overall game of the season.

Carolina could have had Coach Wooden, Coach K, Coach Knight, Coach Calhoun or even Coach Smith on the sidelines running the team and it would not have made a significant difference because Duke has more talent and more size than Carolina has this season.

What is most embarrassing about the beat down yesterday was how the many unknowledgeable fans complained how as a fan they felt the team showed no heart and no grit for 40 minutes. Many felt the team OWED them a explanation of what happened but to be FAIR the team owes the fans ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

If you don’t think every player knowing the season is on the line every time they hit the court is feeling the weight and stress then it proves my point you have never played organized sports at any level.,

This is the time the fans should rise up in unison and help the team pick up the pieces and support them with everything they have instead of letting their personal ego and pride make silly statements and hate toward the coaching staff and the team..

Dave & Dunk - I appreciate the optimism and have tried to maintain it thus far as well. I also posted pregame that we shouldn't get our panties in a wad when we get blown out at Duke. Horrible matchup of size and talent on their home floor.

What has really turned the corner on my thinking is that we are on our 23rd game of Hubert's 4th season. We finally saw a zone and a game where we switched defenses. Both slowed dook, at least long enough for them to try to figure out what we were doing.

Size is difficult to deal with on the basketball court, but not impossible. I'll never forget playing against a 7' 2 dude in college (I'm 6'7). You can't just look at the mismatch and walk off the court. You have to figure out how to utilize whatever advantage you have. So I'll ask again, what happened to utilizing our strengths that we talked about before the season began. We knew we were going to be small and we talked about pressing and running waves of people at opponents. What I have seen so far this year is half court sets (actually it's usually just one play) and us pounding the ball into the floor until we have 8 seconds left in the shot clock.

Unfortunately, all of the issues plaguing this team ultimately come down to coaching. From composition of the team, to the way utilize our players, to lineups, to sub patterns, team chemistry, and of course the X's and O's all stop with Hubert.

As I just said in another thread, I take no joy in saying that I believe Hubert needs to be replaced.

NorcalTarheel from reading your post it is obvious you are one of the few here who have played some organized ball so you know size does matter on the court.

I guess I might be in the minority here but I do not see how a coaching change now with NIL making the big difference on who goes where. Why does anyone think otherwise the real reason that elite ACC coaches like Coach K, Coach Williams as well as the great coaches at Syracuse, Virginia and Miami all left coaching even if it was something they loved so much…

My thought on the coaching change is that, with the right hire, comes more NIL money. We only have to look at our own football program to see how that works. I also, unfortunately, believe that nil is only a small part of our problem. Unless we somehow get the number one recruiting and portal classes every year, we are always going to have to depend on coaching to recognize, game plan, and overcome strengths of other teams and our own weaknesses. I don't see Hubert doing that.

I think that part of the reason all of those elite ACC coaches retired is because the ACC was THE elite college basketball league and had more elite coaches. I don't disagree that most didn't want to deal with this professional League model that nil has brought to us. With the exception of Bennett at Virginia and maybe Jay wright at Villanova, most of those coaches were nearing retirement age anyway.

However, it works out and whatever decisions are made, none of which are mine thank goodness, I will pull for Carolina basketball until the day I die. It's just a little harder these days.

Go Heels!!!!

First, THANK YOU for such a quality reply, there isn't a single thing in your reply that I can see as wrong. You asked a great question, let me reply,

"So I'll ask again, what happened to utilizing our strengths that we talked about before the season began"

You seem to recall exactly what I was saying pre-season, kudos for that! Full court token to hard press, to hard press and traps for a FULL 40Min of hell akin to Nolan Richardson's plan. I still very strongly believe that would have made a major difference in the results so far this season. The problem Nocal is that was MY THINKING, clearly Hubert saw it differently. Now there havebeen some things that have played in to that, Tyson was/is IMO a buster, RJ slow start shooting, Seth concussion, Cadeau not learning how to stay away from foul trouble and far to risky passes, the same sketchy JWit, Jalen playing so soft far to often played a large part in that but those things if anything may have been helped had we played differently in the way I suggested. Sol where did it go, it din't go any where because it never arrived.

Yes, there are things that can at least help neutralize size but we can agree, that longer guy has a huge advantage, the smaller guy just has way less margin for error. And when it gets to the point that the smaller team has to play mostly half court offense it becomes twice as hard. What does a boxer do when he is facing a much larger opponent, he doesn't go at him straight on and trade blows, he uses his speed, dances, counter punches, he wears down that bigger guy. Not so different in basketball.

To be such a small team we don't have a lot of deadly jump shooters that are consistently deadly, we don't have the guard length to be able to shoot over a lot of defenders, and as a team we are not really quick. To play the way I want you do need a mature developed team, we start 2 freshmen and a soph that honesty needs continued maturation. Can you imagine being a freshman right out of high school, you at 6'7" having to deal with that 7'2" lotto selection in the next NBA draft? You know full well how that will simply wear you down and how it can easily get in to your head.

I am VERY concerned with Hubert's development as a head coach, I expected him to learn from his mistakes more, he may be more hard headed that Roy and that from me is saying a ton. I have not been shy to talk about the short comings I have seen from Hubert, I do not feel he should have got the job, I have been clear about that, UNC just is not a job where we can have OJT for the head coach but here we are, 3.5yrs of OJT and if we stay with Hubert the OJT will still be happening. I said some where over the last couple days that in my opinion it takes about 10yrs of success for a coach to be ready for the UNC job. Your approach to offense and defense have to be solid in your mind, not made up as you go, this is not playing football in a sand lot. But we have started that journey now, should never have been started but here we are, same deal with Matt, hired far to early in his career. UNC has now invested 3.5yrs in Hubert's development, I do feel like we need to be absolutely sure before we waste that investment.

Couple more things I would add, first, I do think we will see a MUCH MUCH different, define that as MUCH BETTER, approach to the portal recruiting, I would at least as I type this like to see what Hubert can do when he is bidding on a more level playing ground. I remain VERY CONCERNED with this staff's ability to evaluate talent and that buck stops with Hubert. For example, I have said for his whole time at UNC that Jalen is a 4, he just is not a guy I want to see defending 5s, just a serous lack of physicality, to easily moved out of position by those big men. Lubin and JWit are much more physical and Jalen can jump shoot when he is confident, he has lost so much confidence playing at a position he is just over-whelmed by. I saw some baby steps in the right direction last night, better late than never, to little and to late for this season, yeah, likely so.
