...and Good Googly-Moogly what a defensive effort! Wow.

- Seriously, I can't say enough about the effort... effort to the point our guys were gassing themselves sooner than usual, but hey, that's March basketball right there.

- And hello, Mr Knox. Buckets put on another show for ya. That can be you next year, young fella!

- Speaking of Buckets, JJ was showing the full arsenal tonight, and doing it within the scheme. He only took one bad 3 and forced one drive (they both resulted in run-outs), everything else was vintage. and he even added 6 Assists to his 20 pts.

- Howz about some big Kennedy Meeks?... especially in the second half he was a grown-ass man on both ends, one-handing tough rebounds in traffic, blocking shots like a hoss, and finishing as strong as I've seen him.

- Referencing a post I made on the subject earlier today, I love how this team shares the ball. It's like the mirror opposite of watching State.

- Once again. Luke Maye can play. And 7th probably did his best job of maintaining spacing of the season. That's encouraging.

- Sharing the rock made our Secondary Break roll tonight. While I only had us for 6 Fast Break pts,. we scored 20 off the Secondary, and that's a back-breaker for a team like UVA.

- Speaking of which, that actually looked like the Carolina Secondary Break that Roy Williams teams are famous for. That Hicks trail flush off the block pass was vintage, baby!

- FTs still a concern --- not that we got to the line NEARLY as much as we should have --- but still, 4/7. Bleah.

- Speaking of which, don't know if y'all noticed, but on the Wilkins tip-in that Theo picked up a foul on --- how that happened was Wilkins literally threw Tony to the floor with two hands (right in front of the zebra) to get that lane. Sheesh. And that "double-foul"? C'mon man.

- I'll tell ya, if JJ and JB ever get hot at the same time I wouldn't want to be the opponent. Joel couldn't buy one tonight, but y'know what? Dog was an absolute demon on the defensive end. Made Parrentes' life total misery, and as mentioned above he gassed himself before the under-12 so much so that he finally let a simple dribble slip out of bounds off his hand. And despite a bad shooting night dog splashed a big second-half 3 off a Meeks kick-out just when it looked like UVA might try to climb back in. Game over for all intents and purposes.

Finally, I'm just gonna mention that defensive effort again. Just damn! We need to pull it out again Wednesday!...

I hope this sentence makes sense...we beat the the best team at doing it their way their way. They wanted a grind it out, slow it down, make every point count game. We did that and stomped them.

At this point we can win any way a team wants to play us. Love this squad. Can't wait for March.

Great hustle on D, lousy shooting game for the Cavs. Meeks was fouled 600 (slight exaggeration) times in this game and made it to the line for exactly one free throw. 15 trips to the line in our last 2 games combined? Bullshit, I say, Bullshit!

That's simply an unbelievable statistic.

A couple of other things of note. We had 18 more rebounds than UVA, including a 2 to 1 advantage on the offensive boards. We also had over twice as many assists. Part of that is because they couldn't make shots to save their life and part of it was very good defensive effort by the Heels. That will win you a lot of games.

And I still can't believe we only shot 15 FT's combined in the last 2 games!

So many times a game comes down to the matchups of team vs team, individual player matchups, and coaching decision match ups. Last night was an example of what you get when 1 team wins in all 3 areas.

First it was the ACCs best offense vs the ACCs best defense and folks, we got a lot of weapons, so many in fact that they don't all have to click at the same time and they didn't last night. But in the end it was the bigger team with the size advantage taking strong advantage of that size. Realizing that we did not have to worry so much about their front court being scorers, we stayed legit and in front of the defensive assignments and made them shoot over hands in their face. Funny how when you make them shoot over hands in their face they miss a bunch to the extent that even when they got a more open look they remain cold shooting.

Next the individual matchups, UVa had no one that could check Meeks or Hicks, all they had to check Tony with was those fellas in the convict uniforms with stripes all over them. From that BS double foul thru the rest of the first half, those fellas in those convict uniforms acted like convicts. But back to UVa, they had no one able to slow Justin down in that first half, he saw he could get anything he wanted against his matchup with his length and just feasted. Second half, it was pound the ball inside to meeks and let him just dominate his smaller defender or draw the double and find Hicks cutting down for easy, really easy flushes.

But what it was mostly IMO was one fine coaching job by Roy, he turned the pac man in to Ms Pac man and made it look easy. We started off it was a little dicey, we settled for some ill advised jumpers. But Roy called a out of bounds screen the screener circle cut for Hicks and it was on. We made the pac man chase and then quickly reversed it before it could rotate and either dumped it in or out to open shooters. WE could have made it even worse for them had we not passed up multiple inside ops to posted up Meeks & Hicks and Joel struggled with his shooting. But Justin got the hot hand in the first half and you just feed that machine once it is wide open and purring.

But coaching, first, could tell from the tip on the defensive end the message was drilled in, don't over help, stay in front and force them to shoot over your hands, stay tighter up. Pretty sure Roy made them focus on going and getting the long rebounds off of missed treys because we hustled to them and got out running. UVa was dropping back on their missed shots rather than crash all to the boards but we blocked out really well.

But what stood out to me was the adjustments Roy made in that second half, I can hear him now, "why are you making this harder than it has to be, dump the ball inside, we have such a size advantage that there is no way they can handle you without fouling. If they double then find the cutter coming off a screen". We milked that puppy, we milked it till there was no more milk, we milked it til the cow died! LOL

While it is easy to see the stat lines from 4 of our 5 starters there are a couple I want to point out that can be over looked and shouldn't be. First Luke, 5 key points but 7 big time rebounds with 3 of those offensive rebounds, played really well.

The other is 7th Woods, 11mins zero TOs, 2 assists and 3 rebounds, yet another solid outing young man!

17 assists off of 27 made baskets! Low possession game that is outstanding! They only had 15 made baskets for the game!

We held them to 2-20 from the trey and yes some of those were just misses but because we made them hard looks early they never got their shooting strokes going the the extent that even when they eventually did get some open looks they were cold shooting.

True as that is if the zebras don't call it, makes it a little tuffer. :)

Please watch Roy's post game. He said it himself

Coach speak. When they could get a half way look it was so rushed because of our great D they missed! No set-up and take your time bombs that i can remember. Why can't we keep a positive thread positive? Gets old.

Yeah, watched the post game and Roy did fuss about open shots. Honestly, I didn't see a ton of open looks, there were some of course and I think those are what Roy recalls more of. But this is IMO a lot of coaches speak because we have a tuff game vs Louisville coming up next and our guards are going to have to defend really strong because Lville may be the second best team in the ACC right now, they have a good balance inside to outside. So I think Roy needs to find what ever he can to fuss about so we do not get complacent.

And again, if you do not let a player or a team get off hot early they tend to stay cold late even when the looks get better. A lot of those open shots were hard to get shots, coming off of screens, coming off a run. There just were not a lot of easy catch and shoots, all the running around they had to do to get cleaner looks took a toll on their legs.

Roy always says something to that effect, even if we beat a team by 50. It's a respect thing and I love it.

I didn't get to watch the game but from the people I've talked to, we defended the trey well. It is impossible to prevent a team from getting any open looks. But it does sound like we did a much better job of defending it.

Yeah arch, the difference in this game was the "open" looks they tended to get were where they would have to catch, turn, square, and then shoot. That as opposed to the kick out to spot up shooters that are already squared up and ready to shoot. UVa had to work hard, had to manufacture shots by running off multiple screens.

This is very accurate. They may have been clean looks but they weren't easy to come by. Ask any shooter, when you have to work your tail off for 25 seconds to get that open look it's very different than just a catch and shoot.

Yep, it fatigues your legs. It's much harder to shoot well when you have to work so hard to get open.

Yep. Felt like Maui - where we out-quicked a quick OK State, then turned around and stifled a deliberate Wisconsin.

Louisville will be a serious test. I like our chances on our home court. But every game the rest of the way is dangerous.

Louisville is the first of 3 games in 7 days - with the last 2 on the road, where we have suffered all our defeats.

... and some of those "open" looks were pretty deep. It looked like our D pushed them out farther than they were comfortable with.

I agree with most here that Roy is not wanting his team to feel too good about their effort, and be content with it especially with Louisville up next.

As often as teams light it up from 3 against us it was nice to see a team go stone cold. Yea great D for sure but they missed a lot of open looks as well.

There's a difference between open looks you get when you want them vs looks you have to bust your ass just to get. Somewhat harder to make the latter.

Indeed it did. Parentes in particular was gassed from JB dogging him. All he really got were some damned bail-out fouls, some of which he sold by jumping into a defender.

The open looks they got last night weren't anywhere near as open as we usually give up to dook. We made them work, and as Bilas pointed out a few times, UVA doesn't have the depth we do. Tired legs from working so hard to get open can be pretty effective as well.

Parentes looked like he went through a war when they showed him on the bench late in the 2nd half.

I like the adjustment of posting up on the same side as the pick n roll.

Jacked up their defensive rotation.

Let Puke get those same shots Virginia had and let's see how good everyone praises our D.
Dook gets too many dish-and-drive EASY open looks against us. Hopefully we can tighten that up and make them work harder when they come to the DD. If we get up in their faces, they ain't gonna hit them with the ease they did at H.I.S.

That's just it. Theyre gonna get looks from deep no matter what you do. The key is making them earn every one of them and then contesting.

JB seems to be stuck in 3 pt shot or all the way to the basket mode. When he was playing well, his mid range jumpshots were a killer.
