Seth Trimble Enters Transfer Portal

DAMN !!!!!!!!! That should throw some yuge red flags !!! If RJ stays another year then I hate to think what might be going through EC's mind because he can get (and fng deserves) a guarantee of starter minutes at another school and if EC goes UNC turns to chit for the 24-25 season and could start an avalanche. This is in no way good. jmo

Seth doesn't want to compete with Cadeau, Jackson, Powell, and possibly RJ for minutes. Sounds a lot like what his older brother did after a season of playing with Jackson, Pinson, and Berry. Except Tokoto chose to go pro bc he wasn't able to transfer and immediately play at a new school.

How about we just keep our faith in Jesus because I have absolutely no faith in hubcap and his use of very promising and talented freshman/underclassmen. RJ Davis is in no way shape or form a true pg and if RJ comes back it would not surprise me one bit to see EC bolt UNC for a power school that WILL GIVE HIM ALL THE RUN HE CAN HANDLE. YOU DO NOT DEVELOP ON A FRIGGIN BENCH and Elliot has got to be having serious second thoughts about the way he was used/not used this past season and his options going forward !!! And if he (hubcap) keeps this stupid crap of recruiting over his 5*'s and burger boys, and using them as practice players, he won't be at UNC much longer.

What are you talking about EC started most of the season…He went to the bench because he couldn’t shoot the ball or was in foul trouble….He shot 18% from 3…That’s the worse by a PG in UNC history…I mean teams had the man guarding him back at the FT line…

Take a breath, back away from the ledge! I hate for Seth to go. I even believe he doesn't want to. However things change. We have NO clue what is coming together behind the scenes. Just like last year we heard... "fire HD", "hire Stackhouse" and after some great additions we are back in the sweet sixteen. I'm trusting HD has got this!

Hubcap?

What 5 star players and burger boys has "Hubcap" recruited over?

good thing we had f-ing paxton wojick to play those minutes against alabama

I’m not sure that mattered all that much in Seth’s decision. I mean, it couldn’t have helped. But I think he may have the feeling RJ is coming back and that automatically puts Seth back on the bench for year 3. And if that ends up the case, I think we all would take that trade off.

Were we watching the same team this year? This is stunning to me. The kid was handed the keys and was a starter the whole year. I think he was 4th or 5th in minutes played. As a freshman PG, a position notoriously difficult for freshmen. I mean, we’ve discussed the Bama game and no one likes to see him on the bench. But what else would you point to for evidence of suspect usage for Elliot throughout the season? I thought he was given every opportunity available. He didn’t meet the challenge at times because of his poor shooting.

My thoughts are that if there’s any improvement whatsoever in his 3 ball over the summer, the only thing he will be worried about is getting g worn down from all the minutes he’s in line for.

Man, this is some news I hate to see. I really like Seth and think he would be an important piece to next years team. He improved his shot so much since his freshman year and his defense on opposing guards was so important to this years team success.

Good advice to chill.

Also - s16 for a 1 seed is not the UNC standard. Cannot be. The way he used / subbed people thru the year especially in the Alabama game was not good, to say the least. Hubs has a lot to learn in this regard. If he doesn’t get better soon quick a lot of players will be gone -leading to Hubs being gone (moved out).

About bench usage, it’s….complicated.

Play the bench more and risk losing your chance at bringing in the top high school recruits and transfers? Because those guys are wanting the minutes. The transfers are leaving to go to a place to get the minutes. The high schoolers want to stand out so they can get NIL money. But when you don’t play your bench, what players want to come to Carolina and never play? Not good ones. And that’s the rub. Hubert can’t play the current level subs we’ve had for too long because they’re not that good. Or they’re specialists like Seth. But if you don’t play the bench, you won’t attract good bench talent. It’s a chicken or egg thing.

I am sure this is to do with future playing time.
EC should have the keys to the offense - and hopefully will stay on the court more next season.
The team has two burger boys coming in and both can play wing and defense - however they will be freshmen.
It seems to me, Hubert may be fishing in the portal for a top flight shooter and/or RJ is coming back.
All that will make for a very crowded backcourt, and as someone posted above, another year on the bench for Seth.
So you can't blame him - very sorry to see him go, even more so than Love.... Seth is a fabulous defender.

All that said, I too am hoping Hubert seeks out some mentoring over the off season - working on his in-game strategies, sub patterns and personnel usage. A few rounds of golf with Roy might be in order.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

dang it!
Yeah, sux balls, but this has been brewing since at least February.
Seth unsurprisingly has been assessing his future for a while now. It's a matter of PT and position opportunity.

And no, the bama game wasn't the catalyst for the decision, but well... I'm sure it didn't do anything to dissuade it either.

/sarc

Right? What has he done in-game in usage to earn that trust. I trust his recruiting and sort of trust doing all he can to keep key pieces.

His in game strategy and using right people at right times - i don’t trust right now - at all.
The coach David Sick disagrees with you radically about Hubert Davis and his coaching, including game strategy and bench use. FWIW.

And a number of people would disagree with Sisk.
Thats why we discuss on a message board.... and I thought Sisk was a scout, not a coach.

My point of view:
  • Hubert improved immensely in season 3.
  • Hubert had the team believing and working together - fabulous team coaching after the Year 2 disaster.
  • Hubert re-tooled brilliantly - Ryan and Ingram were grade A transfers. Withers was good, but he had his umm moments.
  • Hubert (eventually) put the ball in EC's hands and the offense hummed from there on.
  • Hubert still made rotation mistakes and leant on his key players too much, even when games were obviously won/lost with minutes available for the bench.
  • Hubert overstacked the early schedule with big games, leading him to overuse his starters and with little opportunity to run the bench.
  • Hubert still too often played 'not to lose' instead of with a killer instinct - eg subbing off EC at the Under 16 after a big scoring run only to see the lead lost in the next 5 min because the lineup couldn't score.
  • Huberts tactic of shutting down the offense late in games and squandering a lead is also something I never want to see again.

But again, just what I saw....

I absolutely HATE to see this happen. I loved watching Trimble play. He always gave us a huge boost off the bench and he was the best defender on the team outside of Bacot. If RJ isn't coming back this move makes no sense unless there was friction between him and Hubert. As for Hubert, I said before I'm not sold on him being a good coach.

That is not at all what it was about, so let's put that aside, and it has nothing to do with RJ one way or another.
Seth is looking at his future at his height and he would like to be a starter and likely a chance to play PG.

Roy Williams started Desmond Hubert over PJ Hairston for half the 2012-13 season. PJ Hairston would lead our team in points per game that year. Clearly the wrong personnel decision. Just to compare, Desmond Hubert scored 41 points for the entire season despite starting half the season.

Roy Williams started Larry Drew II over Kendall Marshall for half the season. It was clearly the wrong personnel decision.

UNC blew a double-digit 2nd half lead to Georgetown in the elite 8.

Roy waited until the Final Four game against Kansas was virtually over until he called a timeout. Wasn't the score 33-7 or something?

Roy didn't have anyone guard the inbound passer in the 2016 National Title game, which led to a wide-open Kris Jenkins 3 at the buzzer.

And I hope to dear lord Roy played his bench more! If you have Marvin Williams, Ed Davis, Tyler Zeller (partially), PJ Hairston, and Tony Bradley coming off the bench... You better play them! Holy crap, lol. The bench argument IMO is not in the same stratosphere. Roy had NBA lottery picks coming off the bench.

I can play the results too! Granted Roy gets a pass for winning championships and that's valid. Like or hate it, Hubert will need to prove himself with championships sooner rather than later.

I guess not then GSD. EC did not start the first game of the year as I recall and may not have started the first couple games but I could be wrong. My only point was that EC was not started or plated a lot early in the season against what I considered both lesser and equal comp and he needed that time to mesh with his new team and gain confidence and this was discussed early in the season on this board. And as the season waned he was often taken out at odd times towards the end of half's and his use in the bama game was pathetic as UNC got the lead and scored like a machine with him on the court and sputtered and looked like a plow horse with RJ at pg .. and imho RJ is to pg what Bacot is to the 5. And as EC sits back and evaluates the season and his options he could easily think if RJ comes back he will be in the same spot again and after this season and EC's use in the bama game who could blame him? Hubcap is digging himself a hole by recruiting over his really good recruiting classes and turning some really good players in to practice players and they will jump in a minute for a team that will give them burn and allow them to showcase what they have .. be it good or bad. This transfer portal garbage has turned colledge bball in to G league lite and it totally sucks for everyone. jmo

Oh, I hear you Nathan, and I'm not saying Roy was perfect at all.... I could add a few more points to your list, especially in the last 4 years of Roys coaching (use of Sharpe and Kessler)

I was talking more about Hubert seeking out further guidance. Roy may not have been the best example based on some of your points above, however one thing he did very well was use his bench early in the season, to the extent where he risked early season games to get players time - Luke Maye being the standout example.

I'm sure if he had DES or Coach Gut to mentor him, Hubert would go there... maybe he already has people he's working with. We all need a mentor or two at times.

I thought Hubert handled the bench perfectly really the entire season with the exception being the Alabama game. He had a bench that had limited skills and they still contributed. The bench is honestly not a worry for me with Hubert and I can't really grade his bench use until we actually have some talent on the bench, lol. Over the last two seasons, Hubert's most talented bench player is arguably Dontrez Styles and he's a productive player for a 20 loss team.

I'll give you the Luke Maye example, although he is far more skilled than any bench player on UNC the last 2 seasons. Far more. But Roy had really all-conference caliber talent coming off the bench when his teams were really good. Pretty easy to play those guys isn't it?

Why wouldn't EC start?

Why wouldn't EC start?
Why didn't he start the first game this past season and why didn't he get more minutes? His pg skill set offset his piss poor outside shooting. Last game of the season against bama was the icing on the cake. If I were EC I;d be exploring the portal options .. especially if RJ returns. And as much as I hate it Seth made a great move by entering the portal. He will make some team .. and their fans very happy !!
