I was too lazy to change the channel after the weekly 4 p.m. NFC East on Fox broadcast and watched the first 15 minutes of this show's premier.

Shit.

I do not know how something so stupid was green-lit. If it lasts more than one season, I'll be shocked. @heelz2345 is probably the only one that knows what I'm talking about.

I'm going to be a little upset if it takes the 8 slot from the Simpsons permanently.

I haven't watched it yet, was planning to check out the pilot at some point this week. The main reason I'm willing to give it a shot is because two of the executive producers are Phil Lord and Chris Miller who did the Jump Street movies, the Lego Movie, and a few other things I have enjoyed, so they have a pretty solid track record. I think the animation/live action combination is an interesting tack, and that by itself was probably enough to interest the network just because it's different. I don't know if it will last, but I'm willing to try a few episodes. Could be terrible though, who knows. I find that with comedy series, it is much harder to be good out of the gate than drama series, and that could be the case here where it's just not found its feet yet. Of course, it might suck. I gotta see for myself first

A truly coryflyian response, good sir.

Listen, they've had that spot for a couple of decades. I'm not trying to change up my routine after all this time. It would be entirely too much for me to handle.
I would assume that they were just trying to get a solid lead-in audience, and it's not permanent. Then again, tv networks switch spots of shows all the time, so who knows.

Just checked how it's looking on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics are divided pretty much 50-50, but the audience rating is basically in alignment with you guys at a 27%. So not a strong start in that regard. Checked the ratings, not terrible, but again, it had football as the lead-in.

BTW, I'm not defending this show or disagreeing with you guys, I'm just saying I haven't seen it, so I can't say for certain if it sucks or not. ;)

I'll say it for you, it sucked. Like the op I too was slow to change the channel and watched the first few minutes, somewhat hoping it would get better, but it didn't.

Well, sometimes a man has to see these things and decide for himself. And while I appreciate that many of you didn't like it, I'm still going to watch the first episode and see. I very well could end up agreeing with you guys. I won't know until I watch it.

On a side note, I watched it long enough to hear a woman say on primetime TV that she was "so coked up" or something like that. And I'm like really? That kind of shit is on at 8:00 pm on a Sunday now? Wow. Our society has devolved past even where I thought it was heading.

The Simpsons is filthy and has been for awhile.....never understood how that made primetime on Sunday night over-the-air cable. At least the vulgar shows on FX and FXX are on at 9 or later, and are on channels that aren't over-the-air.

Well it's kind of amazing what can be said on done on certain shows these days. I watched the premiere of Atlanta on FX this past week, and uncensored, they said the F-word multiple times. I have no problem with someone using the F-word, but I was surprised to hear it on that channel, because most channels that aren't HBO or Showtime can't say it. And yet, even though most shows can't say that or show a nipple, you can see people get their head smashed in on Walking Dead with no sort of censorship. It's an interesting relationship when it comes to what is censored and what isn't.

Yeah I've never really gotten the whole violence is okay for kids but cuss words aren't thing.

In the hypothetical, I'm very opposed to censorship, but in the practical as it relates to TV censorship, I believe you have to censor things to a degree that protects societal decency, which all parents and families have a right to.

I think that's fair. The major practical factor in television censorship is because of advertisers. Premium cable channels (HBO, Showtime, Starz) and streaming services (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu) don't have to worry about this because their shows are seen in a pay status anyway, so they can do and say basically anything they want. Basic cable (AMC, FX, Comedy Central, etc) have more freedom than the networks, but because they still have to deal with advertisers being willing to advertise during their shows, they have to censor certain things.

I personally don't get offended by much when it comes to language, violence, or nudity (the big three in censorship/ratings), but I understand why others might, and especially if they have children, they may not want them to see/hear certain things. I think the ratings system tries to take care of this sort of thing, but as I alluded to, I think the ratings system is flawed because certain shows/movies have strong ratings because they said the f-word or showed a topless woman (regardless of context) and other things that show pretty severe violence are PG-13. The South Park guys actually have a pretty good video about how their first independent movie received an NC-17 but when they were with a studio, they got an R for the South Park movie even though they thought that was more offensive.

To me, the responsibility lies with the person/parent. There are things that I like that may be super violent or have strong language and I don't recommend those to people if I know they don't approve of such things. But at the same time, I think that it's up to the person to have some idea of what to expect with something and not just go in blind. I'm not saying to spoil every major plot point, but if you look at The Sopranos and say "huh, a show about the mob, I'm sure that will be good, and never get violent or have strong language," then that's on you, in my opinion.

The FCC doesn't really pay attention to cable, so that is why you hear it a lot on cable. In theory that kind of language on any channel could be deemed as a violation of the law under the obscene language part of the law. Of course, that pesky first amendment says you can say pretty much anything you want, so that's why they don't really waste their time with cable. No sense in fighting a battle they would lose.

As far as violence, the FCC doesn't have any regulations on it which is why you see it all the time. I've always loved the Simpsons running joke about TV violence and cartoons using itchy and scratchy to make fun of tom and jerry. Most people don't even know it's a joke, which makes it even better to me.

Exactly, Itchy and Scratchy is a very smart response to the criticism the Simpsons received early on about being an "inappropriate" cartoon. They basically said "This has been going on for years, and we're gonna take it to the extreme." It's the same reason that Terrance and Phillip are characters on South Park. People criticized South Park for being a foul-mouthed, toilet humor obsessed, crudely animated cartoon, so what do they do? They make characters who literally only serve that purpose.

I love that show! Looking forward to the movie "Ass" as well.
Yep - Idiocracy movie has come true, but as the makers of that movie said, "Idiocracy was supposed to be satire, comedy, not a documentary...." and it was set in 2500 AD. The real culture has a 500 year jump on the movie. Depressing.
