The Masters

Awesome. Just love Reed, though it sucks to see Fowler so close to his first one.

Wow what a final round!!!

Reed wins it and deservedly so..but man oh man what a performance by Speith... almost a 63 and he puts on a Palmer like charge. Ricky is gonna get there... he has come so close so often that he will win that elusive major. great young man too, but I am happy for reed and now he owns that jacket for LIFE .

Rory??? Disappointing showing on the last day, no excuses he just did not play well enough to win

Rory is a really good golfer but after all that talk yesterday he kind of flunked it today.

Yeah, I've read all of that about him. Kids do dumb ****. I still love the guy.

"Lots of hate" is an understatement. National radio led with the story yesterday. Many different shows talked about it.

I think all it boils down to is butthurt UGA fans. What % of a typical Augusta Sunday crowd are UGA grads and/or UGA fans? I'd say at least 10% at a very minimum. Probably closer to 25%. And that school's fanbase is very cult-like. Once you're out of "Dawg Nation," you're a pariah. So the fans towed the party line and knew they had to hate Reed.

That's all it is, IMO. If this was the U.S. Open in a different state, the reaction would've been different at the final hole.

I have a buddy that is as big of a golf fan as there is. He plays incessantly, played in high school and college and just lives that life. He was sending me text after text over the weekend about how much he couldn't stand Reed. I asked him several times why but he would just say "he's a douche" and "nobody likes him" and stuff like that. I was unaware of all of Reed's transgressions so thanks for the link. But I rarely have it out for golfers. Most are soft spoken, calculated with their words with the media and typically act in a way I find appropriate. I wasn't necessarily pulling against Reed but there were other guys I wanted to win more. But maybe I need a new villain in golf.

Knowing Reed pisses off butthurt UGA fans and that he rubs some people the wrong way makes me want to pull for him more.

I think in golf I generally pull for a lot of the fan favorites, as well as the villains. Pretty much if you're a middle of the road pud, I'm rooting against you. I was pulling for Rickie or I guess Jordan on Sunday, because I thought Reed was just a middle of the road guy (like Oosthuisen, Rose, Scott, Garcia, Day - I root against those guys).

I think most fan bases would hate any athlete that was kicked out of their university for stealing from a teammate, and possibly even cheating on the course. I'm not saying you're wrong about UGA fans, but I just don't think its really relevant here.

I wouldn't call them butthurt for not liking a guy who was a thief and cheat when he was at school there. Those seem like perfectly legitimate reasons not to like someone IMO.

Fair enough, I didn't even read the reasons why they were upset. I just figured there's probably a grand total of 6 legit UGA golf fans - and the rest of the "football only" crowd decided to pile on to a guy they weren't even aware existed until those first 6 spread the word. And I figured they would have let bygones be bygones for a kid who did something stupid in college but is now a pro athlete (pretty much everything we always hear we should do regarding Cam Newton).

Hark is correct. UGA fans don't give a shit about any sport not named football or gymnastics (not kidding lol). They were told they were supposed to hate him, and they followed through.

Also, isn't all that stuff alleged and not proven @uncboy10 ? Even if it's proven, it's not like Reed's checkered past is crazy abnormal for the PGA Tour. Dustin Johnson? Tiger Woods? Those dudes are popular still

... as well as the villains. .

Golf has multiple "villains"? Who are these guys?

(like Oosthuisen, Rose, Scott, Garcia, Day - I root against those guys).

I wouldn't characterize any of those guys as "middle of the road" types. They're all major winners and at one point have been top 5 golfers in the world. How on Earth is that "middle of the road"? Middle of the road to me is Pat Perez, Gary Woodland and Kevin Chappell - guys that haven't won anything of significance, won't ever scare the top 10 and will be forgotten about shortly after their careers are over. The guys you listed, frankly, are legends.

But why would you not root for the middle of the road guy anyway? He's the underdog. Oh, right...I forgot, you're also a Pats fan and a UNC (basketball) fan. Nevermind.

However, with that said and circling back to my first response to your poast, Garcia is and has always been a hateable guy. So not only is he not "middle of the road" with respect to his career path, but he's definitely not middle of the road with regard to how people perceive him either. He was hated at a young age because of his hour long waggle. Then he was hated in the prime of his career because he thought he was better than he was. I don't guess he's as hated as he used to be but I doubt there's a waiting list at the Sergio Garcia fanclub.

Just like I know it's a tough row to hoe, not a tough road.

Well of course it's "row to hoe". How does one hoe a road? But now that I think about it, maybe it should be "road" and not "row". I mean, a "road" would be significantly tougher to hoe than a "row". Right?

Big difference. Tiger and Dustin did stuff all of us have done or would do. I doubt many of us would steal from our friends/teammates.

And for the record, Tiger's popularity took a massive hit when all that came out.

I know very little about UNC golf. But DL3 was my favorite golfer in the 90s. And I would have never rooted for Joe Olgivie. Hell, I didn't even root for Geoff Ogilvy because his name was similar to the duke guy's name.

I know two things about UNC golf. DL3 is from UNC and I'll never understand why we don't have more success in golf.

Idk about the veracity of the claims but nobody has really even questioned them.

Dustin Johnson was caught getting high. There’s nothing immoral or unethical about getting high. Stealing and cheating aren’t even remotely comparable to that.

So right after I post this I check to find out how the golf team did this weekend. Of course we won. Second win of the season.

People who get jumped on by the writers - Reed, DJ, Tiger (although Tiger is obviously just as much "hero" as he is villain). There aren't a ton, but I root for them because people get their undies in a bundle when they win.

Middle of the road personality-wise, not ability wise. As in one side of the road is Hero, the other Villain... these guys are in the middle. Not really sure how that could have been taken any other way actually.

But I do want to stew on you calling Adam Scott and Justin Rose legends... that's rich.

But why would you not root for the middle of the road guy anyway? He's the underdog. Oh, right...I forgot, you're also a Pats fan and a UNC (basketball) fan. Nevermind.

Ya, I'm not getting fan-shamed on this one. I think it's perfectly reasonable for a kid born in Boston and who went to school at UNC to have my allegiances. And I know all about pulling for crappy teams too - I'm a UNC football fan after all.

But again, the point is moot because you misunderstood what I was talking about for middle of the road anyways.

I'll actually retract my lumping Garcia into that crowd, because I do actually dislike and root against him regularly. The more I think about it, I'm pretty divided along the US/International line for fandom in golf I guess. I do root for Rory, but he's one of the few internationals.. and pretty much the only American that I root strongly against is Mickelson.

Yes, you do a better job proving my point than I do.

I did indeed misunderstand. But I’d argue that most golfers - at least their public personas - are pretty docile. I can’t really think of too many that have strong personalities publicly. It’s partly why I personally have trouble finding the “villains” on tour. Most of these guys are smart enough to know how to play the game, what to say in media appearances, etc. I’ll touch back on this in a just a sec.

But I do want to stew on you calling Adam Scott and Justin Rose legends... that's rich.

To their respective fanbases and fellow countrymen, they are without a doubt, legends. Scott will end his career as the second best golfer ever from Australia and was able to do something that Norman never could - win the green jacket. That’s a big deal. He’s also reached #1 in the world golf rankings and won almost 30 tournaments worldwide.

It might be a stretch to call Rose a legend but outside of Faldo and Sandy Lyle, there’s not been a better Brit on the links in the last 50 years. Not bad.

I know, I know. Your fandom is legit. I was just poking fun.

.

Disliking Garcia is easy. We agree. But the rest of the above paragraph is where you went wrong. All things being equal, I’m always rooting for the American - especially in golf. Hell, I root for Americans I don’t like over foreigners I do like. Why? Because ‘Murcia.

I used to root for McIlroy. I don’t anymore. He’s become a big douche. After he won his most recent major (can’t remember which one it was), he sat in that press conference breaking his arm patting himself on the back. He’s gotten too big for his britches and he doesn’t speak of golf legends with the appropriate reverence.

I know you’re not the only one, but I find it inconceivable to not root for Phil Mickelson. It’s like rooting against Arnold Palmer. There hasn’t been a “people’s champ” like Phil since Arnie and probably won’t be. He does and says all the right things. Plus, if I could have the golf game of anyone in the history of golf, I’m taking Mickleson’s swashbuckling style. He might not always win, but he tries shots other golfers are too scared to attempt. That’s what I love about him. It’s what everyone should love about him.

I overly root for Americans over foreigners as well. I do admit that I've waned on McIlroy over the last couple years. I did enjoy his collapse at the 2011 Masters, but then I took a liking to him. He has become a dink recently though, and him pushing for limiting alcohol sales at tournaments may have finally put me over the edge and moved him to my shit list.

I dunno what it is about Phil, but I just can't get on board with rooting for him, except during the Ryder Cup.

I love Phil. I have grown to really dislike Rory, though not as much as Garcia (who I don't dislike as much as I used to). I've never liked Tiger but find myself changing there a bit. I'm a huge fan of the young Americans though. Fowler is my favorite but like all of them (with Thomas being the least likeable out of the bunch).

WTF. How are some of you just now discovering you dislike Rory? Some of y'all must just like him because he lights a fire in your woman and makes her a bit extra frisky.
