6/6/2017 Update - Committed to UNC. Still waiting to see if Pitt will give him a full release.

I know there's another thread but it's gotten unwieldy and doesn't seem to talk about Johnson much. I'd just like an update, if there is one.

It now sounds as if Johnson will be a Tar Heel if the 1 year ban is lifted and he won't if it sticks.
Well, that's pretty much been the case for most of this saga. From what is out there post-visit he indeed seems to have confirmed that feeling. It's also very cool he got to experience members of the family returning for pick-up games.

I understand Pitt's position but selfishly I hope they relent and we get him. Seems like a solid kid who could fit in here (which is always a wildcard with transfers), and we could use him this season in particular.

Can't blame him if sitting a year is a deal-breaker, and if so I hope he doesn't end up at uk or AZ.

He arrived Monday late afternoon and departed Wednesday, said he enjoyed the visit, hung out with the team, met with Coach and staff, toured campus a bit, said he got a real good feeling for CH and how we do things.
I'd say he would be a Tar Heel tomorrow if those idgits at Pitt would wake up, not stand in a kids way and by the by he has already graduated from Pitt...don't care one iota for the conference rules. let the kid go...

I cant see him going to either of those places with the personnel the way it is. I wil feel bad for him if they dont let him come here. Its a perfect fit. He may end up at oregon.

Which is sad, since first choice is UNC. I thought Roy may have been able to work on his friend/the coach...

At some point Cam is going to want to be on campus and working with his next teammates. So even thought there doesn't seem to be a deadline, he doesn't want to wait forever.

With the outrage seemingly dying down, Pitt may have just decided to wait it out.

Is there anything like arbitration available in situations like this?

Since this young man has graduated I do NOT understand how either Pitt nor the NCAA can still claim any jurisdiction as to his choice from here. Please remind me when the time arrives that this young man is forced to pick another school because we are now in the same 16 team conference.?! With the expansion of ALL major conferences, this antiquated rule needs to either be done away with or tried in a Court of law. Anyone else think that a judge might allow him to suit up for UNC next season?

With the current expansion of the ACC TO 16 teams,
I firmly believe that this antiquated rule is possibly illegal in nature. Furthermore, both Pitt and the NCAA are parties to a suppression of freedom of choice by attempting to not allow anyone with a graduate degree in their possession to attend a school of their very own choice, imo. Anyone else think that a Court of law might allow this young man the opportunity to play for UNC next season? The very vague nature of the application of this rule in general can not be considered a legal closed loop, in this unfortunate situation. Rather, the better benefit of the young man involved must be the primary consideration considered here.

What I don't understand is what we're "waiting" for. Pitt's decision was final. The only way he could appeal to the NCAA would be to enroll and take the risk.

I'm hoping there are back-channel discussions that might change that outcome.

No way we let him play if the games he plays in could end up being forfeited (in the event the Pitt decision isn't overturned).

I suppose he could sue, but how long would that take? Probably not a quick enough solution, and wouldn't necessarily go our way.

There's no reason we can't wait til the proverbial cows come home. It's not like anyone else is waiting on our scholly. In other words it's over for us when he enrolls somewhere else... might as well play it out and hope public pressure sways Pitt's AD. And there may well be some informal communication behind the scenes trying to make that happen. #nothingtolose

I say enroll him in grad school and ignore Pitt. He's not transferring. He graduated. The only thing they could do is take us to court and they may not like the expense, the publicity, or the outcome.

If he plays and loses the case, don't we forfeit all the games he played in?

Then again, isn't forfeiture a NCAA determination? So if the case is Johnson v Pitt (or the other way around) or maybe Pitt v UNC - and the NCAA isn't part of the case - is forfeiture even on the table?

So maybe the question is where does the NCAA stand on this? Would they stand behind the school or the player? Or if it's school vs school, does their apparent hard on for UNC mean they will jump at the chance to impose forfeitures?

I honestly am not sold that Pitt will release him to us and thou it is not a popular stance per this thread, I am fine with it if they don't, I actually kinda agree with them, he is not the typical grad transfer having 2 rather than 1 season of remaining eligibility.

There is a BIG TIME big man talent still out there, maybe the best big man talent in this class. Problem is the kid has had off the court issues with the law and UConn cut him loose, Zack Brown. Now my understanding is this kid had a pretty tuff up bringing, is he a bad kid or is he a good kid that needs help, I can not answer that either way but would like for Roy to see for himself. If this kid is a knuckle head like Rashad or PJ then drop it but what if he is a good kid that has made some bad decisions and needs someone like Roy to give him a chance? IMO, well worth finding out and if he is a good kid his talent is off the charts with the right guidance and that is what Roy is great at.

No way in Hades Roy would take this guy. Nor should he. David, did you bump your head??:D

Brown, ranked as the No. 35 player in the class by ESPN, was arrested earlier this month in Florida for allegedly stealing money from a Walgreen’s cash register. He was charged with first-degree petit theft misdemeanor, driving with a suspended license and an expired tag.

He also was charged last May with credit card fraud and robbery in Miami.

I believe Roy has been trying to negotiate with Stallings/the AD, and Cam is giving it a week or two to see if he can accomplish anything. That was my understanding. Otherwise there is nothing to wait for, and he will enroll elsewhere unfortunately.

We shouldn't touch this kid.
Yeah his home life was pretty bad, but it has gotten worse.
This kid was adpoted by wealthy people. I didn't help

The NCAA has rules in place now. However, the organization regularly makes exceptions due to any number of reasons. In my opinion Cam Johnson has earned the right to not even NEED Pitts approval concerning anything to do with his future. This would include ANY College that he chooses to attend in order to obtain a graduate degree. Pitt does not legally own any part of this young man, nor his choice concerning a post graduate degree, IMO. The NCAA could be asked for a decision before basketball season begins. If they refuse to give an answer or they refuse to endorse the young man's eligibility, then they would become directly involved in the young mans freedom of choice options, IMO. Neither Pitt nor the NCAA has the final say in this matter in my stated opinion. If Cam enrolls, then the issue becomes a legal issue in nature as previously stated. In this case a judge could allow the young man to play pending final resolution of the issue...

Come on man. There's no need to lump PJ in with that.
Gary, you gotta admit that PJ has made some knucklehead decisions. To be fair, the majority of them have occurred since he left UNC.
Hey, I'm all for giving people 2nd chances, but if all that stuff re: the Brown kid is true, then it doesn't sound like he's worth the trouble.

All I am saying is it is worth finding out about the kid, I don't know him or the real situations he has been involved in. Clearly it looks bad right now, strong caution should be the point. Look at Josh Jackson, not a bad kid but got involved with stupid stuff while at Ks, John Wall, bad stuff prior to college but no problems since. We don't know the kid or what got him involved in the off court stuff, just saying it may be worth looking in to it.

If the kid is a head case then for sure run away from him but what if he isn't? Not a single person here knows this kids situation outside of what he has been alleged to have done but is there any of us that can honestly say they would not have wanted John Wall to be a Tar Heel now looking back? He looked like a big time problem child going in but came away from Ky looking like the poster child for what you want to see in college recruits. Some times the cover looks much worse than the book...

Roy usually stays away from potential reducing talent...

Sounds very much like a Syracuse type of recruit actually!

I am thrilled that John Wall went elsewhere. He had a handler who got paid for delivery. That isn't the UNC way.

The flags are up hard on this kid. I hate like hell (genuinely) that he had such a horrendously bad situation growing up.

"Brown was previously a Connecticut commit before selecting St. John’s and signing with the Red Storm in November. He had moved to Connecticut last year to be near the program but was asked to leave Putnam Science following an on-court altercation with opposing players"

And UCONN (UCONN!!!) dropped him, he was then signed by St John's and they have dropped him after his second set of charges.

"Brown was arrested earlier this month in Florida for allegedly stealing money from a Walgreen’s cash register. He was charged with first-degree petit theft misdemeanor, driving with a suspended license and an expired tag." and...... "He also was charged last May with credit card fraud and robbery in Miami."

I wish him well..... anywhere else he can get to take him. But Roy is waaaaay too smart to get into this mess.

It makes sense that Pitt would hold steady at least until after the visits and Cam officially proclaimed his desired destination. If that has happened and it's UNC, that would be the beginning of the real heavy effort to arrange the release. I have no idea if they'll let him or not, or if he really wants UNC first, but they had no reason to seriously consider it until the visits all played out.

Hope so! We could definitely use him.
