UPDATED - How Did Cam Johnson's Visit Go & Where Do We Stand

I can't imagine he is coming here without being given a lot of info he can play this year either. Surely no matter how much you prefer one program, the difference can't be so stark to be willing to wait a year to play there can it? If you could pick ANY program outside the conference and play right away.

Is his commitment binding? If not, perhaps he is committing pending clearance to play this year. If he was refused clearance, then he would switch his commitment to another school.

His press release speaks for itself. I wasn't keen on the 2 year idea at first, but this young man is a jewel.

All aboard!

Just put him in the lineup. What's Pitt going to do? Put a leash on him? Sue? Ok, then we go to court while he plays and Pitt ends up losing the case which is what I hear from every commentator or expert analyst says would happen.

Here is Cam's official statement. He is not going to sit out a year. This was just released to media outlets.

CAMERON JOHNSON STATEMENT
June 6, 2017

My name is Cameron Johnson and I am a proud graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. I was a member of the Panther basketball team for three seasons (I sat out one year due to injury) but earned my degree in just three years this spring.

I grew up less than 20 miles from Pitt’s campus. My dad played basketball at Pitt. I love the city of Pittsburgh, the students and faculty and, of course, the fans in the Zoo, but for a number of reasons I wish to continue my studies as a graduate student and play the final two years of my college basketball eligibility at another university.

I have spent the last two months looking at schools and the one that fits my academic and basketball interests the most is the University of North Carolina.

Unfortunately, Pitt has attempted to block me from going to an ACC school, or even having contact with one, since I first announced my intention to transfer following my graduation. After requesting, in writing, permission to be released to ACC schools and being denied by the Pitt Athletic Department, I asked for a hearing, per my right as a student-athlete, from an outside faculty committee.

Shortly following this May 2nd hearing, Pitt’s acting Faculty Athletics Representative, Dr. James J. Irrgang, informed me via letter dated May 4th that he was granting me permission to contact other ACC schools and, “immediately receive athletically related financial aid if you decide to transfer to an ACC institution.” Dr. Irrgang wrote this decision was based on,“the combination of your academic achievement of graduating Summa Cum Laude within three years of your initial full time enrollment and the exceptional service that you have provided to the community during your tenure at Pitt.” Though they granted me permission to contact an ACC school, they stated I must “serve a year of residence prior to being eligible for competition, per NCAA legislation.”

Twenty-four days after receiving permission from the faculty committee to attend an ACC school, I visited North Carolina on my final official visit (May 29). A week after this visit, I informed Coach Williams that I was committing to North Carolina.

On June 2nd, I was informed that the NCAA had determined that Pitt’s attempt to make me “serve a year of residence prior to being eligible for competition” does not apply to graduate transfers, per bylaw 14.6.1. According to the NCAA, this bylaw means graduate transfers must either be immediately eligible or totally denied from attending a school. Having already won the right to “immediately receive athletically related financial aid” from an ACC institution at my appeal hearing, I believe, as does my family’s legal counsel, that I should be immediately eligible at North Carolina. Because Pitt did not interpret the NCAA rule correctly, the faculty committee would have to reverse their original decision and deny me the right to receive aid from an ACC institution. Pitt, in their own statements, has even consistently said “If Cameron were to transfer within the ACC, we would be eligible to receive financial aid immediately.”

Besides incorrectly attempting to block me, there are other reasons Pitt should have immediately granted my full release. During my last season at Pitt, Coach Dixon left to become the head coach at TCU, Coach Stallings left Vanderbilt to come to Pitt, we had one director of athletics leave and another (Heather Lyke) come to Pitt, and just in the last week the associate AD at Pitt who presented the case against me in my hearing has left to join another school.

All five of these individuals left their jobs under contract and all had the freedom to move as they pleased. As a student-athlete, who is not a paid employee of the school, and a graduate, shouldn’t I be granted the same freedom of movement?

Further, there is precedent in the ACC, for men’s basketball and football players to play at two different ACC schools in consecutive seasons, following their graduate transfers.

I started this process believing that having graduated from Pitt, I should have instantly been granted an unconditional release. I feel that should be available to any student-athlete who earns their degree. Unfortunately, Pitt has continued to try and block my wish to attend North Carolina. Now that I have learned that their attempt to make me sit a year before competing at an ACC school is against NCAA rules, I see no reason why the faculty committee, or anybody associated with Pitt, should be able to reverse a ruling they already made. Quite simply, I should be immediately eligible at North Carolina.

Sincerely,
Cameron Johnson

If Pitt continues to push this matter they will come away with two HUGE black eyes regardless of the final disposition of Cam's situation.

If whoever is handling this decision for Pitt has any sense at all they will release an announcement thanking Cam for all he has done at Pitt, allowing him a full unconditional release to play at UNC and wishing him well at his new school.

Cam is actually a better outside shooter than Justin Jackson, but Justin is the better overall player. The Heels will absolutely destroy any team that plays zone.

Great statement from Cam that presents his case very well. Pitt is in a losing battle here and needs to cut the cord sooner rather then later.

Confirmed that he's coming. Working on next season.

Great to have him on board for 2 seasons. Roy deserves nothing but praise for making this happen. Great job here all around.

This.

Took a little luck and a lot of patience, but he's transformed the 2017 into a nice haul with Felton and the boys.

Pitt needs to let go of this. This young man just stated that 4 or 5 employees of Pitt have moved on to other jobs in the middle of contracts. He has graduated and needs to sit out!.

The media ..... Bilas and others are actually on OUR side for once. They will continue to hammer Pitt and the NCAA and both will relent IMO

This young man is special for more ways than basketball...what an intelligent young man..His father mentioned Roy specifically on Cam's decision..A true scholar athlete that will fit perfectly with our team. His ACC experience will help take pressure off our young big guys! Welcome, Mr Johnson..Or should I say Dr. Johnson !! Woooiiiii!

Let's compare last year's stats for Player A, Player B, and Player C. These are all stats per 100 possessions (about 1.5 games worth of possessions), to control for tempo differences:

Player A: 31.6 points
2PT/3PT/FT: .510/.370/.748
8.0 Rebounds, 4.9 A, 3.0 TO
1.3 Steals, 0.4 Blocks

Player B: 28.1 points
2PT/3PT/FT: .463/.354/.806
8.8 Rebounds, 4.9 A, 3.0 TO
3.7 Steals, 0.9 Blocks

Player C: 21.2 points
2PT/3PT/FT: .510/.417/.811
8.1 Rebounds, 4.2 A, 2.1 TO
1.7 Steals, 0.6 Blocks

Who would you take for your team?

Okay, okay. Player A is Justin Jackson, Player B is Donovan Mitchell, and Player C is Cam Johnson. Cam looks pretty good right? Both of those guys were 1st team All-ACC last year. Cam's main failing when compared to them is just that he scores less frequently. I don't know that is hugely negative though; he was sharing the ball with two talented scorers in Michael Young and Jamel Artis, and he happened to post the best shooting numbers of our comparison easily. Keep in mind these stats are per 100 possessions (sorry, it's the only tempo-free stats I could find, and you almost have to control for tempo because UNC was one of the fastest paced teams and Pitt one of the slowest): in 30 minutes of playing time Jackson would only score about 5 more points than Cam, and Mitchell only about 3 more. Also, as a reserve in 2015 Cam was at 25 points per 100 possessions, so I think he's capable of stepping it up.

He's just as good of a ball handler and rebounder as the two of them as well. On defense is where he may come up short, but he doesn't look weak either. Mitchell is truly a terror, and Jackson was a great one-on-one defender although he didn't cause much havoc. Someone with more scouting skill than me would have to evaluate Cam on the intangibles (as a team Pitt was pretty poor on defense, but they had no bigs). At least with basic info Johnson looks good, as he's got solid box score stats and is tall with long arms.

The exciting thing is Cam has another offseason to improve on these numbers, and he's going to be in a better system with more support than he's ever had both on and off the court. You have to think the odds are better than not that he will improve. If he does, he's got to be approaching JJax/Mitchell territory. And... we just might get two seasons out of him!

From what I've read, NCAA rules prohibit what Pitt is doing (blocking a grad transfer). This is strictly a Pitt issue. If the NCAA follows their bylaws, Pitt will have to release him.

The dookies are going berserk over this. Some hilarious stuff over there.

You are the third person to make mention of how duke fans are taking this so I decided to have a look at their comments. Just as I would have figured, @skysdad is the ring leader. That guy cannot control himself with regard to the Heels. His incessant posting (sic) about all things Carolina is embarrassing. If you were to check his post (sic) history, I think you'd find that 2/3rds or more of his 20,000+ posts (sic) are Carolina related. He can't help himself. I guess it's in his nature (bless his little heart). But then some other old guy over there @hart2chesson is literally melting down over this. That fella may put a bullet in his head over this situation. And of course, that completely obsessed looney tunes @DevilDJ is chiming in with his typical Carolina bashing (and now Bilas bashing - because you know, he's sticking up for his alma mater...wait a minute...). I wonder if any of these fellas have the ability to post (sic) here and if they want to come into this thread and explain why this is such a big deal for them. I mean, don't they have another stellar recruiting class? Why would they be worried about little ol' us?

Go to the Pitt board and you can tell they are a football first type school. Half their fan base are livid while the others are wishing him well and tell Pitt to stop being petty. If this was a Duke Grad coming to UNC...you would think zombies had come down Franklin and the dookies would be carpooling to the CDC for their vaccinations.

Gun, I'm not surprised about your comments about the Salad Man. It's personal with the Salad Man. Several years ago his son started posting on our site and made a fool of himself. The Salad Man came to his rescue like a big brother on a playground. We ridiculed the Salad Man so mercifully if was humorous. The Salad Man has not been the same since. It's really pitiful. Please don't let it be a mental issue. I pray for him. Not funny.

This from Skysdad on DI. He's one of many there that have lost their wee minds since we won another title. Very humorous stuff on that Cam thread.

"What does mike know that we don't know. Has a deal been cut. Is mike nifong and john edwards be using their fame to influence Pitt. Lot's of respected power in those two unc alumni. After all edwards could have well been our VPOTUS and who know even the POTUS someday and nifong in his cabinet. Big things may be going on behind closed doors we aren't allowed to see. Whatever it is mikeirbyusa is keeping it close to his chest which makes me think he may be a major player in all this. Sounds like the family may be in a desperate situation and are willing to do anything to get what they want. Hang on to your hats and until I hear that Johnson is going elsewhere I believe hof coach roy williams has pulled it off. OFC"

Well... that would be the norm, now wouldn't it? I still refuse to even glance at their board, but from the idiocy some of them spread when they invade here --- not to mention some of the so-called "Heel fans" who collaborate with them --- I'm sure buffoonery is afoot.

What is funny is one of those three (I think hart) keeps talking about how allowing him to transfer without sitting will set a horrible precedent and UNC will be the cause of the downfall of western civilization. The precedent has already been set in the ACC when UNC allowed TJ Thorpe to transfer to UVA without sitting. I'm sure he was just as livid about UNC doing that.
