Was it La Salle being so bad or did Carolina REALLY tried to go inside so much in the second half?

Being at the game on Saturday I got a closer look at the contest than I would have had on TV and I noticed in the second half Carolina repeatedly got the ball deep in the paint and the bigs had a field day in the block. Was it just that La Salle played Matador defense in the paint or was it the coaching team decided to feed the bigs to see what they could do. Either way it was refreshing to see.

I truly believe this the biggest reason Tyson hit five threes from the corners because the defense was leaving him open to try and double down in the paint. Cade has a quick release like Manek did and he does not hesitate in shooting the rock.

But again the question is still out there was the Explorers defense just pitiful down low or did the Carolina bigs show big time improvement…

I think it has alot to do with it. I have said all year you don't have to be effective on the block you just need to show it to them, and you will get some cleaner looks.

My concern is that it took 10 games to figure it out and even more concerning that they wanted to try that shit show offense to start with.

Dont get me wrong our front court is a mess and not final 4 material, but the team can be better than what they have been.

With that said you will know Tuesday if there has been a change because Florida is going to be a hand full.

For me the answer is yes...😆 LaSalle is a small front line, even for a small mid major. Our "bigs" were able to garner respect, which opens up different options in and out.

Yeah .. they played UNC defense and didn't close out on the hot jump shooter (Cade obviously). Take out Cade and UNC was 5-31 from 3 for a whopping 16% ... EC had a very STINGY 7 dimes and only got 24 minutes. This team has big time issues with player use, lack of team chemistry development and that's coaching even though some will deny, and even defend, it. FL will be a much better gauge of their progress or lack thereof. jmo GO HEELS!!

LaSalle is 289th in the country in 2PT defense so it's probably a sign that they struggle defending near the rim.

We'll see what's real and not going forward

But this team needed a game like LaSalle. It's been a while since they put a somewhat complete W together.

I honestly think the main problem we are experiencing is the talent evaluation is really poor. I don't care what approach on either end of the court YOU prefer, hard to see anyone argue that no matter what approach a coach wants he MUST bring in the talent that fits his preferred style of play. IF, you discover that the talent you have does not fit your preferred style of play you MUST adjust your approach to fit the talent you do have. I simply can not give this staff a passing grade in either of these important aspects. My concerns wiht this staff sadly are not limited to these 2 aspects but these 2 may top the list.

I’d like to hear your other concerns, as I have others besides these two as well…

I will absolutely share that with you and the board but may I wait until tomorrow, I would rather just think about this game vs UF for now. If for some reason I do not answer your request by all means PLEASE remind me, not in any way looking to avoid your question.

We might disagree a bit on that. I think the staff knows exactly what they have so the evals may be spot on. However, the deployment and use, or consistent non-use of the right players is like you said, "insanity". Ball and stats don't lie and if I can see it anybody and their cousin can. If this is the hill hubcap wants to die on he may well get his chance if he doesn't change something pretty soon. jmo

Don't think we do disagree on that al, I just can not allow myself to believe that Hubert and staff do a acceptable job of eval and yet still put guys in positions to have to do things they are not good at. Ex, Leaky as a jump shooter, Cadeau as a jump shooter, Nance as a stretch 4, Jalen now as a back to the basket center, allowing your center to switch off to guard a PG and believe that is a workable thing. Just a few of many examples... How many times have to seen me say "don't hammer square pegs in to round holes"? LOL

OK, so I don't really want to do this because I am gonna upset some folks that I do not want to upset. But I am not going to look to deceive you or anyone else, if you are looking at a drone I am not going to try to tell you your eyes are anything but trust worthy. So, In addition to talent eval concerns and not bringing in the types of players that fit his preferred approach...

Right off the top, a rookie head coach for UNC simply is not going to be ready for this job because there is no room for OJT as the UNC head coach. Duklies would be saying the very same thing about Scheyer but he has benefitted from being hand delivered some big time talents that he hasn't got in the way of. It is the lack of a well thought out plan that is well known to work. Rather than a well thought out plan, it is a collection of let's try this, let's try that? Belichick has shown us the difference between a plan and a few notions of what MAYBE could work? I have been taught if you fail to plan you plan to fail.

Next, been waiting to say this for a long time, Hubert requires his players to visit his office at least 1 time a week and talk about anything but basketball? Excuse me Hubert, do you want to be their coach or their buddy? Why do you need to know why that players favorite desert is Lemon Oreo's, there were far more important things that you should have talked with Pete Nance about than his favorite cookie. Every player on Hubert's teams love Hubert, he is a great guy but their love is not what he needs, he needs their respect, he needs their trust that he can make them in to better ball players and with that better teams. Roy's teams loved Roy, Dean's teams for sure loved that man but there was a degree of separation there that came from absolute respect and trust, they not just listened to their coach they did what their coach asked them to do. Got to tell ya, if what I have seen for the last 3 seasons as well as so far in this one, it is hard to believe the coach is telling them to play this way.

Why do we switch when players are already matched up size wise at their positions? What happened to the ole rule of you only switch when you have no other option?

Why is ball pressure before it gets past half court only good enough for you when you are down by double digits in the second half? Why scream at Tyson for not taking a quick trey when he had a defender flying at him, only to see him take that quick trey and miss a couple trips later?

How is it that this team's most consistent aspect is that it will not come out ready to play at a high intensity level at the opening tip? Is there no pre-game preparation going on from our staff?

How did Hubert play for Dean Smith, assistant coach for Roy and not mandate the secondary break as a consistent part of our breaking? RJ is now on year 5, does he even know what a secondary break is?

How is it that I was told as we all were about how much improved Cadeau's jump shooting was going in to this season and when I watch him I see the EXACT same stroke from last season? How is it that Hubert, Lebo, and Marcus are all on this staff yet Cadeau can't jump shoot? How is it that Jalen Washington weights the same thing he weighted last season, yet we are told how hard he worked this off season in the weight room? Why has there not been a concerted effort, like was done with Tyson to get Jalen taking his mid range jumper? Jalen is rushing his shots, the very few he gets, why? Why does a guy with a high release jumper and a 7'5" reach have to rush his shot? Jalen has balance issues, he does not get and stay on balance well. Maybe you notice how he can not follow up his own misses like Meeks or Bacot did, his base is weak, so why is he having to play deep paint? I would have the UNC med team check him out for potential inner ear issues.

Why for a team that is getting abused due to a lack of length and size replace a 6'10" guy with a 6'8" guy and a 6'8" guy with a 6'6" guy and get even smaller? I guess for the same reason you have a 5'11" 2 guard that is by far the highest volume shot taker from trey continue to bombs away yet not even shooting 30%?

How did this team see the portal end and we not get a solid big body center from it? How did we not address this same issue in high school recruiting this cycle? Why do we have 3 of our 5 starters playing OUT OF POSITION? Why is it that I still see our 3 guards tossing the ball around the horn for 10-15 seconds and decide to attack the paint late shot clock to see a desperate shot attempt in traffic (which oh by the way appears to be our basic half court offensive attack?

Just a few concerns off top of my head, most all I have shared multiple times before.

I don’t think they tried to make leaky or EC a jumper shooter or put them in the position to do so. They bring that on themselves by being not good at it. Hence the leaving them wide open. It was either learn to shoot at least at a decent clip or why even play. With that said I think EC can shoot it. Idk what he’s thinking or what the problem is, but he started out the year pretty decent and then just stopped. He’s in a small funk but he’ll be ok. Just like RJ imo, overthinking and trying to be the hero because they know what they can do. We need em both in order to be good. Bad thing is, we need a big man, only if it’s to rebound. They would do wonders for those two.

Appreciate you sharing. Nothing I personally disagree with.

As far upsetting some folks… they tend to be the ones who look at the program as if it were their child, always viewing it through hopes of its highest potential. If those people can’t look at the program objectively and without bias, them getting upset is their problem, not yours.
