When did news and observer become so anti UNC?

I seem to recall that when I was a student at UNC the paper was generally UNC - centric. In a good way. I seem to recall that many of the writers were UNC grads.

Has that changed?

Like most newspapers these days, they are probably being controversial on purpose to sell papers as that industry is struggling terribly in this day and age. Not a new tactic. The State paper in Columbia has been anti USC for years. Even during the Spurrier glory years in football. Just a sign of the times. Newspapers have basically been reduced to liberal rags that looks for the sensational in any way they can

Just for clarification, before one declares newspapers to be "liberal rags" one might take a peek at ownership. As an example, the News & Disturber. Just sayin'...

I think this is pretty accurate. Media has always been pretty liberal, but it has swung way to the left in recent decades. I could cite many examples but I don't want to introduce politics into a basketball discussion. I will say that I grew up reading the Greensboro Daily News and the Greensboro Record long before they merged the two papers into the News and Record. They were once very pro UNC as far as sports but are just the opposite in recent years.

I don't read any newspapers anymore.

All of you are right as journalism seems to produce more snowflakes than a lot of other majors. Also contributing to the trend is that most of the papers everyone read, and trusted, growing up have been bought out by the likes of The NY Times, or USA Today. Both openly left leaning rags. And this extends into the sports reporting as it has taken a lot of the local accountability out of it. Allegiance to promoting local teams in a positive light doesn’t appear to have the importance it once did. But you can bet your paycheck that if they can squeeze in a favorable story on a social justice issue it will be front and center.
