Women's Basketball

I think because she's recruited so well and has made the tournament every year people tend to forget where we were before she got here. We were in a bad spot and she has turned that around. We obviously want UNC to win championships, but we are significantly better than we were when she walked in.
No doubt the program was in shambles, players transferring out and recruiting had suffered tremendously before Banghart arrived. She will get the program back on track no doubt. Does anyone knows what's the status of Paulina Paris, have not seen or heard anything regarding her?

Guess I was wrong about the Lady Heels they secured an 80 to 70 win over 6th ranked NC State at Carmichael tonight. This was one of the remaining games which was thought to be a lost, but they played a good game. Team seems to be adjusting to the injuries which they have incurred and are playing to their strengths, which is defense. Next up is a game against VT in Blacksburg, which is going to be a tough one. They played VT to an overtime game a few weeks ago in Chapel Hill. They are currently 10-5 in conference play and 18-9 overall with 3 games remaining until the ACC tournament begins.

If they can get to the 20 win mark I think they have a good chance to make the tournament. That moo win looks good on the resume and 12+ wins in the ACC is pretty good.

With 3 games left to play, do not expect them to beat VT on Sunday, but Boston College and Duke are winnable games. Appears they could be 20-10 going into the ACC tournament, which 7 or 8 teams at the top of the standings could win the tournament.

That was indeed a bad performance by the women's team. Next up is Duke, maybe they were over looking BC leading up to the Duke game. They need to win this game in order to have at least 19 wins going into the ACC tournament, and need to win a least one game to reach 20 wins. Only two players showed up last night Maria Gakdeng - 7 of 10 from the field, Indya Nivar - 7 of 16 from the field. Team shot 5-26 from the 3 point line for 19.2 %, yet BC shot 10-21 from the 3 point line. Deja Kelly, Lexi Donarski and Alyssa Ustby were a combine 5 for 37 from the field.

Have to give them some props, they were down 62-44 in the 3rd quarter, but they managed to close the game only losing 78 to 74. They will make the tournament, based upon strength of schedule, but will probably be a 8 or 9 seed. If they win their opening game, they will have to face the Number one seed in their region.

Good win by the women against duke. That probably puts them on the right side of the bubble regardless of the tournament results.

UNC women's team are in the tournament regardless, their strength of schedule is one of the best in the country. In addition to that they have had some good wins, along with some bad losses, but the good wins outweigh the bad losses. Their problem will be depth at the guard position, Deja Kelly is their only legitimate guard healthy at this point in the season.

Lost to Miami in their first game of the tournament. Hope they make the dance but not sure they deserve it and if so not expecting much.

Hate saying this, but that has been what they have done the past 3 or 4 years, unable to get pass the first game in the ACCT. We all know they have been riddled with injuries this year, same as the past several years. This team will not be successful shooting 35.7 per cent from the field, 23.8 per cent from the 3 point line, and 14-21 from the FT line. Banghart needs to hit the portal hard this off season, they need some shooters which this team does not have. Still unsure if Deja Kelly or Ustby will return for their Covid year or not. Verdict is still out on Poole and Zelaya, believe these two will transfer out after the season.

No doubt the women team will make the NCAAT, but all likelihood they will be an 8th or 9th seed, and will not advance out of that. If they are fortunate enough to squeeze out a win, they will be facing the number one seed in their region. The good thing is if they win their first game in the NCAAT they will have 20 wins for the season.

Obviously this season has been a disappointment but when you don’t have the team throughout the season that you thought you had assembled it’s going to be tough especially in a conference like the ACC.. That being said with recruiting where it is right now I don’t believe there is any way you can make a change until they get a year if not 2 where a handful of players don’t all miss a multitude of games or the whole season!!

This does not refer to a coaching change, it's getting players who are capable of scoring. They have plenty of shooters, but no makers. In all fairness to Deja Kelly, she has to shot too much with no other offensive options, that why she ends up taking 20 to 30 shots a game. Injuries are part of the game, depth can alleviate some of the downfall, providing you have player coming off the bench who can step-up. Banghart will eventually thrive in the conference as a coach, the job she has done with the personnel which she's had, and the injuries. Carolina team will be better next year let's hope. Since the competition will only get tougher with Stanford, California and SMU women's team joining the ACC along with the teams that are currently ranked in the ACC.

Repeat of a past tournament where the women were seeded eighth or ninth and won their first round game, only to lose to SC the next game. My only wish is that they can compete and not get blown out by 20 or more points. South Carolina after getting upset last year by LSU after going undefeated truly believe this is the year where they win it all, do not see anyone who will challenge them.

Carolina women won their first round game in the NCAAT against Michigan State 59 to 56. Was not a fluid game with both teams committing 16 T/O's each. Gakdeng and Ustby both had exceptional game, not so much for the other players. Team shot 40.7% from the field, 30% from the 3 point line, and 8-18 from the FT line for 44.4 percent. Next up is the Number one overall seed, and undefeated South Carolina. Congrats to the team, they won 20 games this season, despite all the injuries they incurred at the guard position.

Was not much of a game, final score 88 to 41, sort of expected that. Hard to competitive in any game when you shoot 23.8% from the field, 16.7% from the 3 point line, and 57.1 % from the FT line. Getting outrebounded by 21, not a good formula for even being in the game. Well, as stated previously with the injuries they have had, it was a good year for the women. Sure Banghart has a lot of things which she will be analyzing over the summer and building a roster for next season.

This may have been the game which will push Ustby and Deja Kelly to return for their fifth year (Covid) for redemption. With a healthy Toomey and Blanca Thomas along with getting their guards healthy may make a difference next season. Certainly hope so.

Was reading an article yesterday about the women's NCAAT, and it was about the higher seeds playing games on their home court during the first two rounds. That it provides a disadvantage to the teams which have to play them on their home court, and it needs to be changed. What are your thoughts on this, does it need to change? Currently, they are using this concept in the NIT, which from my perspective it save travel time and the school traveling expenses.

SCar played their most complete game of the season according to their coach. That was an awesome display and hated we were the other team in this game. Hope we used that to measure ourselves and to get ready for next year.

Going to be interesting to see what the roster will resemble next year, to see if certain players will be using their Covid year or not. This team strong point all year has been that they play tough defense, but all other areas they have struggled. Examples, shooting the basketball, rebounding, self imposed turnovers, unable to shot FT's. Hate to state this but Banghart has a lot of things which she will have to determine on what type of team she will put on the floor next season. Expect some players to depart, and it will be more than the two who opted for the portal after last season.

I would say change it, but still keep it close, similar to how the men do it.

Surprise Paulina did not bolt last season, wishing her nothing but the best. Expect Key will be the next one to hit the portal, she has been hampered with injuries and never reach the potentials that many had for her.

After four seasons in Chapel Hill, UNC women’s basketball forward Ali Zelaya is entering the transfer portal for her fifth and final collegiate season. Zelaya made the announcement on social media on Monday afternoon.

(1.) Also it appears now that Anya Poole will reportedly play her final season of collegiate eligibility elsewhere. She was a senior this season, and her playing time diminished this year from her sophomore and junior season.
(2.)Teonni Key will reportedly hit the portal and play her two remaining seasons of eligibility elsewhere, unfortunate for her she was injured most of her career at Carolina. Which may have contributed to her not being the player which was rated a 5 star, number 9 out of HS.

That is a total of 4 players on the women's team which are going the route of the portal, if you include Paulina Paris who did earlier.

Hate to lose Key but maybe she is understanding with what is here and coming that her role wouldn’t increase much if she can stay healthy

Have to agree with your assessment, her injuries and development would not be conducive to her earning sufficient playing time with Toomey and Thomas being ready for next season. Have to feel for her, hopefully she finds a team where her playing time will increase providing she can remain healthy enough to contribute.

Well it appears that Sarah Strong the number one player in HS for 2024 will be making her college decision at halftime of the Chipotle Nationals on 4/6/2024. She is down to UCONN, UNC and Duke, most expect her to commit to UCONN. But if she pull a surprise and announce for UNC that would be a recruiting coupe by Banghart, and would escalate UNC to a final four contender next season, she's that good. Sarah is a 6'2" forward that possess amazing talent for a HS prospect.
