Hubert Davis

I believe this is the reason Steve Robinson wasn’t retained. Too much like Roy for Hubert.

I want someone to ask Hubert about coach Robinson at one of post game interviews. Just interested to hear what Hubert has to say.
AC, yea, I'd love to hear his response on that one. However I suspect we know why, you mentioned it, seems like HD wanted his own gig, clear out the RW way. Mainly tho, having Mr. Robinson with more experience and knowledge, would cause an uncomfortable level of accountability for HD, and he knows it...

Quick stuff (Stanford game)...

I had (and have) zero problem with Roy annointing Hubert, BUT... and this is a big BUT, it should have been with more hands-on guidance.

One of the potential foibles of any new HC is the temptation to "reinvent" the proverbial wheel.

As I'm sure you know, when Roy got the KU gig, while on one hand he brought much of Dean's bread-and-butter with him (e.g., Passing Game, Secondary), he also put his own stamp on some things --- and he and Dean actively talked about that as it was happening.

BOTH of those were good things.

I know Roy is hands-off unless he is asked, but in all honesty, the best thing that could happen right now is for Roy to have a "Come-to-Dean" sit-down with Hubert and the entire staff.
After all the discussion about HD and coaching issues, hot seat, blah blah blah, is it possible HD can turn this around? I mean is it realistic to think he will self reflect, make some real adjustments, seek RW to possibly collaborate planning for 2025-26? Given more time maybe? It's possible he could pick up a quality big and a reliable shooter in the portal and still underperform. Honestly, is it too late and time to find a proven HC and lay down some $$ for the new staff? Many have seen enough but is it really time to start moving him out, well before contract end?

Caleb Wilson to announce Thursday, January 23rd

If he was looking for a team where he would be the standout player he would pik UNC cause it doesn't look like we'll much of anything else atm.
All the reports from over a year ago had UNC as the heavy favorites to land Caleb Wilson. He loves Hubert and he loves UNC. But then he signed with Klutch and our NIL hit rock bottom, and next thing you know every expert is saying UK is far and away the highest NIL offer he's gotten. This lasted up until about 2 weeks ago. It appears Hubert has found enough donors to make our NIL offer to Caleb worthwhile.

In a world with no NIL, Caleb Wilson likely commits to UNC during his junior year of high school.

Quick stuff (Stanford game)...

Gary, I would add, Roy was very accomplished, in the HOF, has his natty rings, was set in his ways, what he did worked so why change. His words, he considered retiring after his last natty, if you have to ask if it is time it usually is. His last season, Roy knew it, just not a great season for him, maybe felt with the changes that NIL and the portal have brought it was no longer his time and I think the hunger just wasn't there to fight it.

I do think Roy truly felt Hubert was ready to take over, I think in large part because he himself was able to be the Kansas head coach without ever being a head coach elsewhere. Thing is, I always got the sense on his coaching staffs that the only coach he would really listen to was Steve, I don't know that Roy expected Steve to move on as well. Roy, my opinion didn't utilize Hubert the same way Dean did Phil, I think Phil had a great deal more say on things, Roy was not the effective responsibility delagator, it was more Roy's way and everyone else get in line with that. Hubert needed to go to a smaller school and learn not just what works and doesn't but how to run a program without the safety net of a hall of fame coach holding you up.

IF we were to get Wilson, it would be dumb to bring him in as a 5, especially a back to the basket 5 but Jalen shouldn't be a back to the basket 5 either so dumb has happened. But I doubt we would be on Wilson's list if we are trying to sell him on being our 5, he is a facilitating 4 that will give you those weak side shot blocks, snag boards, quick leaper and really long. Very impressive passing big man, really nice mid range and is stretching out his range. Her is thin so he can be muscled around some, see Boozer, dukie incoming. But he has a "slither" factor, very athletic, gets up off the floor quick and pops back up for that second leap, runs the court like a gazelle. Easy pick for a day 1 starter.

EC will come back and getting a guy like Wilson does nothing but assist EC coming back, a big man with great hands + Cadeau, seriously, that good stuff. Dunn, one of our freshmen for next season just hit 8-10 treys in a recent game ( gonna like his Danny Green shooting stroke) and Denis is a solid talent as well, the loss of RJ should not hurt that much and frankly the chemistry between Cadeau and RJ does not strike me as great. My gut is telling me Drake comes back to play the 3 (where he belongs) and Seth at the 2 with Cadeau. I think jump shooting wise we will be fine when the freshmen get their feet wet, think I would see Denis backing up the point and Dunn the back up 2.

I think we need a broad shoulders 5 to pair with Jalen, the better of the 2 starts, Lubin I move to the 4 to back up Wilson, and who knows what the deal with High becomes. James Brown development and maybe High as well should dictate what level of 5 we need to portal in which dictates how much we need to spend for the portal 5. Gee, did I leave Tyson out, well golly gee whiz, I did?

Getting Wilson FLIPS the dominos, makes us immediately longer and yet Hubert still has his jump shooting from the 4 and 3 he seems to covet. That gives us good length in the front and back courts and we don't lose quickness.
You're saying Dunn but I believe you are referring to Dixon. Happens to the best of us😃

AJ: Heels have Little Room for Error Remaining

Personally, I don't think we will miss the tournament. Even if Hubcap keeps dangling us over the edge like MJack.
No room for error, but this team has shown an astonishing persistence at winning riiight when they're in danger of falling into the danger zone (UCLA, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, etc). Not to mention we had our worst loss last week and barely moved on the NET and bracketology projections.

I think we come away with a win tonight too. JM1C.

Funny you say that, as every time they show him on TV, it stikes me how Roy looks 10 years younger than when he retired.

In all honesty, I don't think it was age as much as accumulated pressures of the job that had Roy off his game during his last few seasons. And I think he knew that.

Now granted, I doubt he'd want any part of dystopian NIL-Portal-world, but I'll guarantee you that, after the deep breath he's had, Ol' Roy could coach the hell outta this roster.

Lordy, just having the Secondary return (with a PG of this ilk dealing) might just bring tears to my eyes... ;)

He can't answer that question and when I say he can't answer that question I mean literally. You were asking a lot he can't even articulate why a defensive switch or substitution was made in a game that was played 20 minutes before he stepped into the room.

Hubert reminds me of a guy that's trying the "fake it till you make" way of thinking but he not very good at it. As my dad used to say he don't have a bullshitter bone in his body.

Scheyer will still be at dook long after Hubs is long GONE!!!!!!!!!
You may be right, things absolutely have to change for the better for Hubert to out last Schyer but that is more a problem of Hubert that praise for Schyer. I suspect, given the same players Schyer has been GIFTED by K, there are well over 300 NCAA coaches right now that would have brought in similar results.

I can't judge how good Schyer is as a coach, appears to be a good baby sitter but outside of that who couldn't bring in a big time season with 3 NBA next draft first rounders and possibly 2 of them being lotto. Could even have at least 1 more NBA first rounder in the next draft for a total of 4? And of course he already has the legacy Boozer twins on the way for next season. At some point, he is going to have to go out and win the recruits that are not hand delivered or not looking to play with their buddy that was hand delievred him, then we may see what level coach he is. I suspect he is not experienced enough to be a great coach, he was never a head coach before getting picked by K either.

Yeah... he's certainly not being recruited by anybody as a 5. That would not only fly like a lead balloon, it ain't his calling.

Bring Roy back for 2 years. He looks refreshed enough now.

Caleb Wilson to announce Thursday, January 23rd

That’s not why he stayed at Stanford…He stayed because his parents wanted him to have that Degree…If not for that he would have been at UNC this year…UNC was already talking thru back channels with him…Ingram was helping as well as Coach Hasse..

Fact of the matter UNC and more importantly Hubert failed in the portal this year….Cade Tyson is a waste of 750,000 dollars….It happens all the time in the NFL and NBA…Roster Management is a thing now and make no mistake it will get you fired moving forward….
Do I need to point out my use of the word kinda or the LOL i ended the post with? Did you not read it as light hearted, it was intended to be light hearted.
