Quick stuff (dook game)...

Dave & Dunk - I appreciate the optimism and have tried to maintain it thus far as well. I also posted pregame that we shouldn't get our panties in a wad when we get blown out at Duke. Horrible matchup of size and talent on their home floor.

What has really turned the corner on my thinking is that we are on our 23rd game of Hubert's 4th season. We finally saw a zone and a game where we switched defenses. Both slowed dook, at least long enough for them to try to figure out what we were doing.

Size is difficult to deal with on the basketball court, but not impossible. I'll never forget playing against a 7' 2 dude in college (I'm 6'7). You can't just look at the mismatch and walk off the court. You have to figure out how to utilize whatever advantage you have. So I'll ask again, what happened to utilizing our strengths that we talked about before the season began. We knew we were going to be small and we talked about pressing and running waves of people at opponents. What I have seen so far this year is half court sets (actually it's usually just one play) and us pounding the ball into the floor until we have 8 seconds left in the shot clock.

Unfortunately, all of the issues plaguing this team ultimately come down to coaching. From composition of the team, to the way utilize our players, to lineups, to sub patterns, team chemistry, and of course the X's and O's all stop with Hubert.

As I just said in another thread, I take no joy in saying that I believe Hubert needs to be replaced.

UNC's Coaching Staff

One thing I won't/ can't do is criticize the assistant coaches. I have nothing to go on in this regard, nor does anyone on these forums.
Carolina assistant coaches are silent and that is by design across the board.
These coaches are either complicit in their belief in the system that Hubert is now running........
OR they don't share Coach Davis views and think this is the train wreak that we all see game to game.
What can they say? An assistant coach must remain loyal to a fault as long as they are employed. I don't think any of us will know their true feelings until way down the road.

Hubert Davis

Hubert's future might well rest on how good he is as a rematch coach. Unless I'm forgetting something, Pitt is our first rematch this season.

In 2024 we lost the rematches to Clemson and Duke while winning the rematch against and Pitt, both rematches against FSU, and we split 2 rematch games against NC State. 4-3.

In 2023, we lost the rematches against Pitt, Virginia, NC State, Duke and Wake. 0-5.

In 2022, we won the rematch against Virginia, Duke (twice), and NC State, but lost to Va Tech. 4-1.

Three-season rematch total = 8/9. Not great, but not awful, either, considering the competition.

[Apologies if I missed any; I was just running my eye down the lists and may have missed a rematch.]

If we do have a new commitment to NIL, I would pose this question - What have we seen over the last four years to make us confident Hubert can develop and coach up a team full of good players? I witnessed a preseason #1 team opt out of the NIT and I can’t not remember that happened. This year appears to be another example of a top 10 preseason team that will miss the ncaa tournament.

Quick stuff (Wagner game - NCAAT)...

Spot on. My expectations for Eliott Cadeau moving forward have changed.
When we signed him, I always thought he would be here for two years.
After watching him play this season, I think there is a better chance of him playing 3-4 years in College, than playing 2.
NBA needs shotmakers, and positional size.
EC has neither at this time.
I think he will improve a great deal as a shotmaker, but he isn't close currently.
Carolina benefits with Cadeau being fair/ good shooter rather than great shooter
( longshot at best) because then we will have him a long time. I think Cadeau as a Jr/ Sr would be filthy.
I wonder if years 3 and 4 will be as a Tar Heel?

Not sure why we think we could lure Oats from his successes at Alabama to take over a dumpster fire here.

While looking up Oats to see if he maybe had some strong NC connections - apparently not - I ran into this Wikipedia comment

During the days immediately after Hurley announced his departure, Buffalo's athletic director at the time, Danny White, interviewed the team's players, all of whom advocated for Oats becoming the permanent head coach.

Which makes me wonder who among our current coaches our players would rally around if told that Hubert was being cut loose. Would they try to save Hubert? Would they get behind Marcus? Who's the players' choice?
I'm sure that any coach that comes here would want some type of nil budget guarantees, much like Belichick has, built into his contract.

The University of North Carolina men's basketball program is still a top five job in the country. The dumpster is on fire right now, but the new coach, and his recruiting and portal pull would more than likely fix that in the first year (see Mark Pope @ Kensucky).

As to which coach on the current staff the players would pick... If we let our legendary, Hall of Fame, Carolina lineage coach pick our next HC last time and it ended like this, I'm a hard NO on letting players give it a shot.

Best coach available out of the family.

I TAKE NO PLEASURE IN CALLING FOR HUBERT TO BE REPLACED, BUT IT SEEMS SEEMS LIKE IT IS NECESSARY.

If we lose to Pitt at home and to Clemson on the road, Hubert is gone. Just a guess.

If Hubert is cut loose, who becomes temporary head coach? I assume it would be Lebo or Frederick. I wonder which the players would prefer.

If Hubert manages to survive the next 2 games, UNC has a pretty creampuffy schedule until the Duke rematch. Out of 6 games, only @FSU "should" be much concern. So whoever is coach - Hubert, Lebo or Frederick - will have a chance to fix things and maybe even get us into the tournament.
You say cream puff schedule…Man we are the cream puff now….we start a lineup that NC Central would start….Think about that….

5’11 ——PG
5’11——-SG
6’4——-SF
6’3——-PF
6-7——-C

WTF is going on that a Head Coach would think this is a good lineup…It’s a clown show…

We are bringing in a GM to fix this mess. It seems we screwed up the NIL negotiations last year with some big men or Davis was turned off by the money grab. A GM will be the middle man to handle this new BS era of greed so Davis can focus on being the coach.

I expect us to buy 3-5 more players for next season and give Davis one more shot with a majority of the team back. Add 2 real big men and a 1-2 3pt shooters then we could be in business with Wilson, Powell, Washington and Cadeau.

Is North Carolina serious? What UNC does with basketball coach Hubert Davis will tell us

Holy crap did anybody see this article in USA Today
Thank you for sharing this article. This is a really well written article that speaks to exactly what many of us on this board have been saying. It’s time to show that Carolina, a blueblood premier program, is serious about winning and not more concerned about it’s nepotistic desire to keep it in the family.

Quick stuff (dook game)...

This game, as I shared in the game thread, encapsulated in the very last bucket duke got to end the first half. 6'9", #1 pick over all in the next NBA draft hits a jump shot over 5'11" RJ Davis. Duke started 2 6'6" guards, their PG looked like a NFL line backer, a sweet shooting 6'7" projected as a lotto in the next draft in K'snipple, 6'9" #1 pick in the next NBA draft, and Malisquatch at what 7'2 and can hang on the rim while standing flat footed on the court? That is insane length, not just a length advantage at every single position but huge length advantage at each position. Just have to realize how hard that is to contend with.

Your passing lanes shrink, they left Malasquatch in the paint choking off drives. The biggest team in NCAA vs one of the smallest teams in the NCAA, size matter a heck of a lot. I am actually more proud that those kids stood up and fought their behinds off in that second half. I actually saw Hubert do something I did not expect, we actually went to a zone, we actually used multiple defenses I can't recall Hubert having us in a zone since he has been head coach. That was a bit of an amazing half time adjustment, maybe Hubert is beginning to learn.

Team looked intimidated in that first half but they came out and played hard in that second half. It is one thing to watch duke play on tape but UNC simply can not replicate it to be able to be prepared for it, you can only experience it and experience it we darn sure did. I felt going in we were in for a butt kicking experience, I actually felt we would get beat by 30+, it is just a game of match ups and this is the worst match up we could face.

Now I get it, this game feeds to frenzy of the Hubert must go movement, some may not like my not being as upset over this or this game as they are. I am simply looking for positives, looking for things, even this late in the season that show me that we are moving more in a positive direction. Now if we can take how we played and build on it against Pitt, we can take that game. My concern is we have been in this position to build on a tough nose second half come back before only to come out un-prepared in the next.
Thank your you Dsouthr for breaking the game down so people who have never played organized basketball have a better idea of some of the ins and outs on things most likely people don’t even think about or consider and only look at the final score and nothing else.

You are one of few people who posted during the game about the giant mismatch that Carolina faced at Cameron when 4 of its starters aside from Lubin were smaller in height than the smallest Blue Devil starter who stood at 6’5…

Over and over again Knueppel the Duke McDonalds all American freshman posted up senior RJ Davis and easily shot over RJ and scored or got fouled. 24 points later the rout was on.

The mismatch in size was at every position and Carolina had no one size wise that Had a chance defensively against Flagg and Maluach but I will point out Lubin might have had his best overall game of the season.

Carolina could have had Coach Wooden, Coach K, Coach Knight, Coach Calhoun or even Coach Smith on the sidelines running the team and it would not have made a significant difference because Duke has more talent and more size than Carolina has this season.

What is most embarrassing about the beat down yesterday was how the many unknowledgeable fans complained how as a fan they felt the team showed no heart and no grit for 40 minutes. Many felt the team OWED them a explanation of what happened but to be FAIR the team owes the fans ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

If you don’t think every player knowing the season is on the line every time they hit the court is feeling the weight and stress then it proves my point you have never played organized sports at any level.,

This is the time the fans should rise up in unison and help the team pick up the pieces and support them with everything they have instead of letting their personal ego and pride make silly statements and hate toward the coaching staff and the team..

Absolutely that might be an answer to why boosters are not wanting to part with money right now.

If I was a booster with heeps of money and I disliked the hire like i did my money would have stopped completely the day he was hired, then after the first season I would have said, I was wrong and spent again and then after the second season I would have been done for good till he was fired.
Shelby, now you are sneaking in to what I have been hearing, there have been some boosters that have been shy with the dollars, NOTE the 2 words "have been" as opposed to "right now". There seems to have been a major change in that, change that may have crystallized of all things by our hiring a football coach. There seems to be a ripple effect that has changed the picture a good bit. I am hesitant right now to join the feeding frenzy of demanding Hubert be fired today because I am curious what the next portal may look like for us going in with much deeper pockets.

Hubert, in this past portal was selling, son we may be $1 million less than those other programs in our upfront NIL but you will make that up and then some because of the stage and spot light we will give you. The reply was that is cool coach but we are talking a MILLION BUCKS, I like ya coach but a million bucks is a million bucks and you are asking me to spend a million bucks to play for you, good luck selling that, LOL?
