We are so thrilled to announce that Lee Wardlaw has joined our staff as a football recruiting writer. Lee will be taking over the bulk of the beat interviewing players, allowing Deana to move up into more of a director’s role.

Lee has a healthy journalistic background, including covering the regular news side of things, which is one of the things that intrigued me about him. He understands our standards at THI, and wont deviate from them. That was an important component in finding someone to add to our staff.

He currently covers recruiting for the South Carolina site as well, and is based in Jacksonville, FL, which means we now have someone in that part of UNC’s footprint, Brandon Peay in the Charlotte are, Deana west of Winston-Salem, and Trey Scott in Kinston with an eye on the eastern part of the state.

Plus, we have partnerships in multiple spots in Virginia, another in Georgia, and now one in Tennessee, as UNC’s recruiting has extended in that direction.

I am extremely excited about this development at THI, and promise that we will continue looking for ways to get better in everything we do. And with the two announcements today, I am confident we’ve taken a big step in that direction.

Conquering anxiety: Leaky Black finds peace on and off the basketball court

Posted May 1, 2023
Jackie Manuel first recognized Leaky Black’s anxiety. The pressure in Black’s life was overwhelming when he first opened up to Manuel. He admits that he was his own biggest critic and was worried about trying to please everyone. But, to Manuel, none of that mattered. "The only thing I want you to do is enjoy your experience," Manuel told Black. (UNC.edu)

UNC Set To Face Campbell & ECU

BY UNC ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Coming off a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Tech on Saturday, UNC continues its challenging final stretch of the season this week as it faces No. 13 Campbell and No. 14 East Carolina in its last games before exams.

The Tar Heels will welcome the Camels to Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday, May 2, at 6 p.m., and then travel to Greenville, N.C., to take on the Pirates Wednesday, May 3, at 5 p.m.

North Carolina has won seven in a row over Campbell, including a 7-4 victory at Boshamer Stadium last season, and leads the all-time series 39-9. Alberto Osuna and Hunter Stokely each had a pair of hits in the victory a year ago, with Stokely driving in a couple of runs.

Stokely enters Tuesday's game riding a career-best eight-game hitting streak.

The Camels haven't played since dropping back-to-back games to Duke and Elon a week ago. They lead the nation as a team with a .448 on-base percentage and rank second in runs per game with 10.2.

SERIES AGAINST ECU
The Diamond Heels will look to avenge a pair of losses to East Carolina during the season's second weekend, each by the final score of 6-5. North Carolina leads the all-time series 56-34 but trails only 14-20 in Greenville.

HORVATH RACKS UP WEEKLY HONORS
Junior Mac Horvath was named the Perfect Game/Rawlings College Baseball Player of the Week after hitting five home runs and registering 19 RBIs in four games last week. He was also tabbed the D1 Baseball Player of the Week and ACC Player of the Week. Horvath hit two home runs and drove in eight against UNCW to start the week, then hit two more homers and drove home seven runs in game one of a doubleheader Saturday against Virginia Tech.

20-20 CLUB
Horvath is looking to become the second player in school history with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season. He currently has 19 in each category through 44 games. His 19 blasts this season are a career-best, while his 19 swipes tied his career-high from a year ago. The only other player to record a 20-20 season at UNC was Vance Honeycutt as a freshman in 2022 (25 home runs, 29 stolen bases).

WALKS UP, STRIKEOUTS DOWN
Honeycutt leads the ACC in base on balls this season with 48 walks through 44 games, seven more than he had in 64 games as a freshman. His on-base percentage is also up 25 points this year (.434) compared to a year ago (.409). He's also struck out at a much lower rate this season, averaging less than a strikeout per game (0.977) compared to 1.4 per game during his rookie season.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
UNC scored a combined 25 runs in its doubleheader sweep of Virginia Tech on Saturday, with a 12-8 victory in game one and a 13-7 triumph in game two. The Diamond Heels have scored 10 or more runs in five of their last six wins, including each of their previous three. North Carolina is 16-0 this season when scoring 10 or more runs.

Early Ranking = #19

That's ESPN's Borzello in his "Way Too Early" preseason poll.

And here's his projected lineup. Interesting that he switches the positions of Ingram and Withers from what some here expect. But I don't suppose it matters if they are both on the floor at the same time.

As someone here said, these days the 3 and 4 are sort of interchangeable - in the way that the 2 and 3 used to be interchangeable a decade or 2 ago.

Projected starting lineup:
R.J. Davis (16.1 PPG)
Cormac Ryan (12.3 PPG at Notre Dame)
Simeon Wilcher (No. 27 in ESPN 100)
Harrison Ingram (10.5 PPG at Stanford)
Armando Bacot (15.9 PPG)

THI News

We are happy to announce that Deana King is moving into a new role with some slightly different responsibilities here at THI. She is stepping back from the daily grind of producing football recruiting content and into more of an overseeing and administrative position with recruiting and the site in general.

Deana has done an amazing job with the daily grind of the beat, but it was time for her and us that she moves into a role where she is truly the Director of Football Recruiting having a greater hand in running that aspect of our operation.

To make this happen, we have hired a new football recruiting writer, whom we will introduce later today. Deana will still be quite active with in-state recruits in the grunt aspect of the job, but she will now have more time to enhance how she peruses the landscape across the board.

She will still do podcasts, her weekly “Deana’s Dandies,” and provide other content. But she will direct our increasing coverage of UNC football recruiting, as well. Plus, she is formally second in command, and when I am away, she will be in the lead spot at THI.

Personally, Deana has become a tremendous friend of mine, and our nine-year friendship and partnership is something I cherish greatly. I am so thrilled to have her in this new role. This is a great day for THI.

Second live period this weekend

The coaches flipped assignments from last week. Sean May and Brad Frederick will be in College Station at the Adidas event to see Ian Jackson, Isiah Harwell, Darryn Peterson, Koa Peat, and others. Hubert Davis and Jeff Lebo will be in Phoenix for the EYBL and Elliot Cadeau, James Brown, Drake Powell, Jarin Stevenson, and a lot of underclassmen. They don't offer unless Davis sees them live. He was at Adidas last week, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see several 2025 offers go out next week from the Nike circuit.

Finance Thread a.k.a. Ways to Lose Money

I thought we should have a thread where we can talk about anything related to finance here. That will allow us to separate all the bad financial information into one thread for easy access to bad ideas. So, who else has been following all of this meme stock news this year?

Oh before I forget, anything I post in this thread is not financial advice and should not be interpreted as financial advice. You should consult your own financial advisor for any investment advice.

Ranking Power 5 Schools on developing recruits for the NFL

The Athletic has done a study of how schools rank on developing 3, 4, and 5 star recruits based on getting drafted by the NFL. ESPN has also reported on this. The whole study has been released. They looked at the last 10 years. We rank 17th overall which is not bad. There is a general feeling that State does better at developing players but they are tied for 30th.
