Offense vs Defense

When I look at recruiting, I am never worried about if we can recruit offensive guys. We load up on twitchy, game-breaking type players on offense. Historically, I can't say the same for our defense. And then the few guys that I think are twitchy seem to get stuck in our system.

We do have a few guys that could make game-changing plays IMO:
- Boykins - So much more potential here. I do think he can be an everydown nickel for us.
- Cheeks - I can't wait to get him healthy!
- Gray/ Echols - Gray has protypical OLB size/ speed and Echols can be a missile. They both have had learning curves but I expect another bump up from them. More plays behind the line of scrimmage!
- DL - I actually like our athleticism here but something different has been holding each guy back. Health..strength...technique...confidence..conditioning. I want to see them put it together collectively! This unit could shift overnight easily and change the direction of our program. Similar things could be said on OL but our outstanding skill position talent has outweighed collective OL shortcomings. Carter/ Williams had crazy YAC for a reason!
- DBs - These guys have been an enigma. I never thought it was a lack of physical ability but mentally good lord. The guys were physically in position to make plays unless there was a total mental breakdown (which happened more than we liked). I am really hopeful about a few of the transfer additions (i.e. Huzzie and Allen) here! I also hope a few of the experienced guys like Hollins get another shot to provide quality depth for us. Add in a healthy Conley who can float between Safety and Nickel based on need.
- Jack - Taylor going down last year the D the most! Gainer may be a bigger upgrade especially if he brings Taylor's work ethic and passion. Our younger guys are hopefully getting bigger/ faster/ stronger and not just fatter.

I kind of just talked my way into being reservedly excited about the potential of our defense this year. lol I STILL DON"T TRUST IT until seeing it on the field in September!

Dean - Hubert - Today's kids

I recently listened to the Shammond Williams/Pete Chilcutt interview, and I also recall the Shammond/Jimmy Black interview in which both Pete and Jimmy remember their days as freshmen and that they hardly ever played (Pete even red-shirted) but that Dean developed them and they eventually became well-loved Tar Heels. This brings me to two points: 1 - Hubert needs to employee what he supposedly learned from Dean (as well as Roy) and develop these kids that he recruits; and 2 - Kids like Nickel need to learn that you have to earn your playing time and don't expect to be on the court for 30min as a freshman if you're not ready (by the way, was Nickel a HD recruit?).
I realize this thread could go a lot of different ways because I wouldn't say that Love deserved 38min/game, but he got it ... no accountability from HD.
Ranked 300th in bench usage ... that's is totally unacceptable.
Soft kids that leave at the first sign of adversity ... this is probably the fault of my generation ... I know that my kids are pretty dang soft ... my fault.

I just hope that HD doesn't turn the Carolina program into everything I hated about the latter teams of K ... a six man rotation that jacks up three pointers all day.

I just needed to vent ... I'm PO'd about how HD coached this past season, and about how kids just want to get the heck out of Chapel Hill (although I can't really blame them).
Hoping for a better season next year ... Go Heels !!!

Nance, Collins, and Davis

Just some thoughts.

Nance, who improved each year in college until this year, was better last year at Northwestern than he was this year at UNC.

UNC is one of the 2 or 3 most important, accomplished programs in the history of college basketball. So Davis was granted a very top level job with no HC experience of any kind. After 2 years there is no sign that players get better under him. Save for a lucky run in the NCAA Tournament last year, his teams have no growth.

Northwestern has one of the worst histories in college basketball. So Chris Collins took over a job that seems impossible. Including this year, Northwestern has been to the NCAA Tournament twice, both with Collins as HC.

Does Nance regret leaving Northbnwestern? If he had remained, he'd be playing in the NCAA right now.

Panthers Trade

Looks like the Panthers traded up to No 1 in hopes to get a franchise QB. Does anyone think there is a better 2023 option at QB than waiting a year for Drake??

Heck the Panthers made it to the Super Bowl despite Jake Delhomme! Lol. They built a phenomenal D and had great FG kicker, Kasey, who broke the single-season scoring record.

My biggest fear for Drake is that he starts thinking too much. If he gets the reps in some of his bad habits will be reduced but other than that...just go out there and BALL! He is a generational talent IMO!

NCAA Pool (Contest #3) Brackets - 64 players

I have assigned the seeds. The site says Contest #4, but this is actually Contest 3.

There is not much logic beyond the top 2 seeds in in each Region.
