2020 recruiting thread

DJ Stewart cuts his list to 8, Cade Cunningham cuts his list to 5.... both include UNC.

Am I being cynical in thinking their inclusion of the Heels is just window dressing?

I don't think so. Cunningham cut Duke and Kansas off his list.

All of these “Top 7” and “Top 8” lists make me appreciate a certain somebody: Day’ron Sharpe.
And Coby White. Don't forget him! You know, speaking of all this attention seeking by recruits these days, social media has shown just how self-centered a lot of people are. I've been saying for 30 years how self absorbed people are, and social media has proven my hypothesis to be correct. It's comical and sad at the same time.

And Leaky Black!

How about MarJon Beauchamp. This kid is ranked 29th in the country and he is skipping college to train for the draft. Of course I don’t know his full story but how do you pass up a free great education to a Div. 1 powerhouse school? These kids don’t seem to understand that the ball will one day stop bouncing and they need to have something to fall back on. Plus, just the memories and experience of college. That is where you get top notch exposure. These kids think their God’s in High School ball and when they go to College they are shocked that other guys are just as talented. Some can’t handle that level of competiveness because it’s such a huge jump in overall talent. Like John Henson’s father said it’s not how fast you stay in the NBA it’s how long you can stay in the NBA. I’m afraid that The overall quality of Basketball is going down.

Not a big fan of the "fall back on education" argument. 1st round picks make more off that initial check then most college graduates in a lifetime. Hopefully their not stupid with it though. Get the money however you can.

I would like to see the numbers of 1st round picks versus guys that played 4 years and graduated from Carolina and did not play professionally. I’d bet that that spectrum is much smaller. So in short, what I’m saying is that if you put in 4 years in our basketball program and then graduate, you’re going to receive ample training/education and most likely, you’re going to go on to be very successful, make a lot of money and feel like you’ve contributed to society in some way.

Let’s see now he is ranked 29th in high school so let’s give him 9 spots up in the draft and that’s even if he gets drafted at all. He goes 20th.

Not to mention the Carolina Family and decades and decades of contacts. I’ve said this numerous times Michael always said he wouldn’t have been the player that he became if it weren’t for Dean Smith and the Carolina Way which help build his foundation and fundamentals. I just do not see that this kid will benefit by training for the draft and not playing with structured competition. Once again this kid is a 4 Star player in High School

"Mobley's father, Eric, is an assistant coach for the Trojans, and his older brother, Isaiah, is an incoming freshman for Andy Enfield's program. Eric Mobley was hired in March 2018 after spending several years coaching in the Compton Magic grassroots program. Two months later, Isaiah Mobley, a five-star prospect in the 2019 class, committed to USC."

Well there you go.....

Some of the recruiting analysts ("experts") seem to agree the kids decision to "train" for the NBA next year is not in his best interests, go a year to school and "train" there with the whole array a blueblood would offer or go to the G league or overseas.
Not certain he or his family have done the math to properly train for a professional basketball career. Do they have the ability to pay half a dozen full time "trainers"?

The waiting until 11-13-2019 to 11-20-19 for "early signing" and the regular signing period from 4-15-20 to 5-20-20 is a long way off. As one of our posters suggested, let's see where some kids opt and then see where we are with kids that want to be Tar Heels.

We seem to be in all of our recruits trimmed lists. It will be interesting to see which ones want to be Tar Heels. Trying not to be bias but there is only one choice and it just matters who pulls the trigger first. The Blue Blood Program. The prestige, the Family, the Tradition...... Chapel Hill

I'm waiting on the day (and it will come) where a highly recruited 5 * will just fax in his commitment. No media show. No press conference. No announcement date on twitter. Just a fax.

Fax? Maybe instead he should send a telegram. That would be awesome. That player immediately becomes my favorite college athlete.

I'll never understand hiring a relative who most likely will suck at the job for one year of a player, even for a crappy basketball program. It's hard to be any more short-sighted than that. Blows my mind.

Can't get much more efficient than that. Hire 1 parent, get 2 5-star players.

Pure gravy if the father is actually a good coach. And the father probably won't even care if he's let go after a couple of years, because his kids will be playing in the NBA.

Plus, if we assume the dad had something to do with the development of his sons, it looks like he did a very good job and might just be worth keeping.

Per CB we're in the lead for 2 of our 14 open offers: Jaden Springer and Ziaire Williams (where we are tied with Stanford). But a lot of our offers have too few predictions to matter, so far. That said, I'd like to see us gain traction on a few of them.

We also look to be out of the running on 5 of our offers, give or take. These are guys like Cade and Kessler, where there are enough predictions and we aren't leading or even close.

We need more guys. We definitely lose 3 (BRob, Keeling and Pierce), almost certainly Cole, and possibly Armando.

Unless some of our offers start trending more strongly for us, we may need to cast a wider net.

Read a little piece this morning that was by Corey Evans:

Just because Duke offered Ziaire Williams doesn’t mean that the five-star wing is a done-deal for the Blue Devils. I like Duke's chances, but North Carolina has recruited Williams for more than a year. The Tar Heels sit in a good spot for Greg Brown, Donovan Johnson, and Isaiah Todd. It also would make a lot of sense for North Carolina to target Josh Hall. (Rivals.com)

Can't say I disagree with 'ol Evan Williams! I think I'll have another.

I disagree with Evans that UNC is in a good spot with Todd. Yes, we are a finalist but most believe UK is the clear leader.

Love is a huge target in my opinion. I think we have a good shot with him, selling the Cole Anthony role to slide into, being the scoring guard point role. Ball in hand, with uptempo talent to run with, go get it!!

Kessler is much more of a long shot I think. Looks like he is all but officially committed to be a Dookie at this point.
