2020 recruiting thread

I really hope that we can get Ziaire Williams to commit sometime in the early fall as I really believe that he will making a killing in our offense. I can see him be successful in our B3 Secondary as the wing curling hard off screens for looks from 3 and jumpers inside the arc.

Also, with his ability to attack off the dribble this action can help free him up for more opportunities to convert inside the FT line and going towards the rim. I remember how successful Justin was in this his Junior year (with that great floater he used when he attacked the rim) and I can see Ziaire having some of that same success too.

I think Hunter Dickinson ends up at Notre Dame or Purdue, but Louisville has done a tremendous job working its way into the picture. Things changed some Monday, though, when North Carolina offered. The Tar Heels have to continue to pursue Dickinson if they want to have a chance, but UNC is now a legitimate suitor for the most polished center in America. (Rivals.com)

Okay Corey....
I just watched the short clip on 247.

At 7'2 and 255, think a taller Tyler Zeller with a bit of baby fat. Looks smoother than Zeller at the same stage. Maybe not as quick, but moved well. It was a short clip, so hard to be sure.

He'd be a great fit for our program. The only thing I wonder about is that we might end up with 3 centers: Armando, Sharpe and Dickinson. And that isn't even counting Manley, Huff and Miller.

Even if Armando is OAD, that's a lot of bodies competing for PT.

Day'ron is mobile and an excellent passer. I bet we could play Day'ron and Armando at the same time.

Would be a monstrous lineup. Seriously, I'm already excited for 2020 - 2021. I just want to see those two on the court together.

We'll still have Brooks, too. I'm guessing he won't need to play a single minute in the post. ;)

Moreover, if Sharpe can slide to PF, we may never see a minute of small ball, either.

Yup. And hopefully Manley or Huff can add some meaningful minutes their senior year. I still think if Manley can stay healthy he could be a special player.

Although, it may be getting harder to play a two big lineup all the time. I don't think there was a starting PF over 6'8 in the ACC last year? Outside of UNC maybe even 6'7.

UNC is in on another very good point guard for 2021, Kristian Lander. He is getting a lot of buzz up this way.

Agreed Professor, I made a comment on those two being much like Sam and James in the early 80's on a post way back a month or two ago or something.
Day'Ron, Mando and Garrison and/or Sterling....goodness, we could dominate some teams.

I see Roy was out to see Paolo Banchero, 6'9" forward IIRC, does everything well, '21 class.

DJ Steward is the latest UNC offer. Good shooting 6'3 combo guard from Chicago.

After watching Peach Jam last weekend, my interest in Earl Timberlake has really soared. My first thought when hearing about him was that since he plays on a very good high school team, DeMatha, he would be able to make a nice smooth transition to playing with other talent around him at Carolina. And after seeing him this past week, it really reinforced that fit for me and took it up another notch.

Earl did a little bit of everything in the games I saw. He was handling the ball a little and making plays for his teammates, banging in the post and battling for rebounds and then working out on the perimeter and driving into the lane while playing right through the contact. No matter what he was doing, he was making a positive impact on his team and playing a tough and aggressive brand of basketball that was nice to see.

He is a versatile player who I can see slotting into the 3 or 4 for us and having a major impact in our success for a few years. He is built really well and I think could make a big impact defensively right away. I think his outside shooting needs some improvement and more consistently, but the rest of his game is one I really enjoy. I also like that he is a kid from the DMV area and getting him will continue to give us strong roots there.

Zaire Williams transferring to Sierra Canyon. I don't know if I like that.
I just saw that a few minutes ago. It can’t be a good thing imo. Lebron is going to have a huge influence over that program and everybody knows his love affair with Dook and K. Plus, BJ Boston is transferring there too and he’s been favoring UK. UK has reached out to Ziaire and started recruiting him recently. So, I don’t see any positives in this move for us.

And another thing, this is the school that Marvin Bagley went to and y’all remember how shady that whole deal was.

Doesn't mean that he goes to Kentucky or Duke. The former is more active I imagine in reaching out, but I don't see LeBron personally getting involved in order to send him to Duke.

Keep in mind, LeBron respects K as a coach. That's not the same as having a love affair for his program.

Zaire is a great kid from a great family. Thinking Lebron, who he has never met, will have any impact on his college decision is laughable.

Some pretty high praise about RJ Davis for his play at the CP3 camp.

“It can be tough for smaller guards to separate themselves in these camps, but Davis absolutely shined in every scenario. He’s a no-nonsense floor general with an incredibly well-rounded skillset and genuine toughness on both ends of the floor. Davis is an exceptional on-ball defender that can legitimately frustrate all types of opposing guards with his tight positioning and mirror-like quickness. He shoots the ball at a high level from everywhere on the floor and was able to regularly knock down three-pointers from NBA range. Everyone in the country should be buzzing about Davis, as he’s going to be extremely successful at the next level.”

Would love to get a commitment from Davis as I don't feel the "Love". Davis is just coming into his own and would most likely be around 3-4 years. Plus I used to love it when we had a strong NY pipeline.

It's the European model. Identify the top tier young athletes, give them concentrated elite training, facilities, coaches, trainers, diets, with no practice time limits/ restraints from state athletic Associations high school limits. Schooling with tutors and prepare for your trade/profession.

A bit off topic but did anyone see that espn article about youth basketball? The idea is that they put so much wear and tear on their bodies from a young age that by the time they reach the pros their extremely vulnerable to injury.

In other words, there is such a thing as too much basketball.

I saw it, but I mean, the best of the best are the best because they play basketball every day. I am not sure what they assert to be done to fix the problem can ever possibly result in better basketball players.

It is a catch-22.

You did read how guys like Jordan and Kobe weren’t necessarily basketball 24-7 right? They took breaks. You can’t be at your best if your body is already broken down.

I disagree, volume is not the answer, quality is. I’m a swim coach and I’m always careful to keep our practices short and output focussed, avoiding ‘junk miles’.

We’ve all seen the videos of super talented players dunking on hapless opponents in AAU... that is unnecessary volume or ‘junk miles’ which essentially only provide wear and tear on kids bodies.

I read the article and the comments about them, and I call bs on it.

Kobe Bryant is on the record for having started playing basketball at the age of 3 years old. He played basketball in his youth, at a good enough level to come back for tournaments every year during the summer in the US.

Jordan was a multisport athlete that specialized like they stated later on. But, Jordan did have a broken foot which cost him most of a season, as well. So, is there any actual correlation?

I just watched the clip of Dawson Garcia on 247. I have no idea why he's listed as a center. Looks more like a stretch 4 to me.

Don't get me wrong, he doesn't seem to mind mixing it up inside, so I suppose he could play in the post. But he moves well, has a good handle, shoots well from outside, and drives well. So while he could play post, he looks even better as PF.

From the little I saw, I'd be happy to see him on our roster.

For some reason he reminds me a bit of Rick Fox.

Long clip of RJ Davis. You'll want this kid if you watch the clip.

I had watched a shorter clip that made me worried he had a loose handle. Don't see that at all in this vid. I think he may get a little Cota-ish when he isn't being closely guarded.

The kid is quick, shoots well, has a reasonably quick release, a good pull-up, and makes the acrobatic shots, too. Energetic and fearless. Might just be what the vid editor chose to show, but he looks more like a scorer than a distributor, although he delivered a few good dimes, too.

Think Coby White without as much instant zig-zag. Davis has a good first step and changes direction well, but I still think Coby was part squirrel.

A few good Mando sightings in this clip, too.
