There's a thread on TOS that says that Carolina is getting a 6'10" walk on. Anyone have any idea who that might be?

Supposedly it's Walker Miller, Wes' half brother. Very thin but quite skilled from what I've read. Good shooter with range. Graduated 2017, was originally committed to Dartmouth. Not sure if he's officially on board or not.

Media reports says he's 6'10 225. If true that's not skinny.

His frame can easy add another 20lbs and he apparently has the shooting range to be real stretch 4.

Interesting to say the least.

Kid is looooong and not so skinny.
A nice pick up for the Heels if he comes - solid 4yr type.
I wonder about the size difference between him and Wes! But I hope they share the same basketball smarts.
And... speaking of 'smarts' is the additional upside: He had an Ivy League acceptance - so just like Cameron Johnson, Miller will be another quality student addition to the team.

Not skinny at all in video. Has good skill set, it sure seems. So, next year UNC Basketball will have at least 3 Bigs who can start at Center. Add in three shooters and a great 4 year player, interns of being a glue type guy, then yes Roy did an outstanding job recruiting this past season! Folks, UNC will have 10guys who could all get some minutes, next season. Again, a solid pickup.

This from a recent article.

"Miller expects to enroll at UNC for the second summer session and begin his freshman year next week, and is finalizing a walk-on spot with the 2017-18 Tar Heels."

"I was talking with Coach (Roy) Williams in the fall and he told me if I ever wanted to come to Carolina there was a spot for me," Miller told Inside Carolina on Saturday evening. "The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to play there so I decided to make the change. It was hard (to decommit from Dartmouth) because I'm really close with an assistant there. It was definitely hard to tell him, but Coach Williams was excited when I told him."

Are any of our walk-ons considered "preferred" or "invited" walk-ons who (as I understand it) are guaranteed a scholarship if one is available?

Kinda looks like Mike Tobey from UVA with better range on the J potentially.

Hopefully he will develop to the point where he can help the front line guys by giving some competition in practice. Good in the classroom and in the locker room. Don't really see him having the skills to ever actually bring anything more than an emergency backup.

Wow, sure this is the same kid? Not long ago the kid was 6'10" and listed at 205. the 205 was very liberal and yet now listed 225 and looks every bit of that?

Saw a very nice shooting stroke out to trey, jump hook with both hands, solid footwork, hands looked pretty good. Granted, just a clip but liked what I saw a ton more than thought I would, not sure why this kid was not more widely offered?

Yeah Dave. Folks are getting a bit ahead of themselves. He is still pretty skinny and will need to add strength. That's why in the other thread I said he is likely a year or two away from helping us on the court. Other than that this one is a solid pick-up all around.

If he were a scholarship player, I'd probably be urging a redshirt year to bulk up and grow up. I mean he really does look young. If he tried to take a charge from Michael Ojo, he'd be in the hospital for a month.

That said, I agree that he looks promising. He himself admits he needs work and muscle to be able to compete in the ACC, so his commitment is a sign he's willing to do the work.

Right now he's listed at #415 on 247, but clearly that's based on very little exposure.

"In 2016, Miller played with the Albany City Rocks on the Nike EYBL circuit and was teammates with UNC freshman Andrew Platek. Williams, along with Wes Miller, got a look at both Platek and Walker Miller."

I am sure this is based on your years of extensive college coaching!!! I have no doubt hundreds of wannabes said the same thing about his older half brother as well.....

In fairness he's a walkon who was committed to Dartmouth and ranked near 500th in the class. I know some here like to think that just because a kid signs with unc he's been granted some magical talent that no one else knows about but..,His statement is more than likely true.

I figure all our freshman big guys have something they do reasonably well or they wouldn't be here. Having 4 of them presumably means they will each get more different "looks" in practice. More things to defend against. Different defenders to try to score against.

More is better.

Even if Walker can only give us 2 minutes a half as a freshman, that's a little less pressure on Manley, or one of the other guys.

Plus, more fouls to give.

Thanks. I suddenly feel even better about this kid.

When you guys get to talking about recruits and potential the one thing that most continue to not take into account is the level of conditioning, coaching and one on one instruction guys get at UNC (and on the college level in general) that they get nowhere close to as high school players. Great coaches have enough experience to see the raw talent and the insight to know how and what their staff can do to develop it and that is one of the under appreciated things that make UNC so consistently good. jmho

The young man WANTS to be a Tar Heel and he's willing to walk on to do it . .

Roy told him he would have a place for him in Chapel Hill if he ever wanted to come . .

No one is claiming him to be an immediate impact player, if, he thinks he can make a better progression here rather than Dartmouth, then let him live that dream.

I realize I am not just old but more like ancient school but I still recall the contributions and progress made by the likes of the Wolfs, Warren Martin, Salvadori, Chilcutt, and a few more. Let's give these kids and our coaching staff a chance at similar development.

You're misunderstanding what a preferred walk-on is. All that phrase means is that the college coach invited him to play for the team. So Miller will be considered a "preferred walk-on", as Rush is. That contrasts with an uninvited walk-on, which is just someone from the general student population trying out and making the team without any previous contact with me.

However, neither of them has been given any promise of a scholarship. One of them could get one this year though, as we only have 12 scholarship players right now.

Yes, and one of my favorite Tar Heels ever, Serge Zwikker comes to mind here as well.

Thanks.

IIRC, Jackson Simmons was an invited walk-on with a guaranteed scholarship if/when one was available. Or, perhaps more accurately, he was guaranteed to be first in line if scholarships became available. That's the kind of relationship I was thinking of.

Walker showed a couple of moves from the baseline that made me think of Joe Wolf. He has a good bit of maturing and catching up to do, but who knows?

Yeah .. Players like Joe Wolf are the ones that could get on the all UNC "lunch bucket" team. Never really were all that flashy but were solid contributors. Tyler Hansbrough would be the captain of the "Lunch Bucket" all time greats. Old "Big Smooth" Sam Perkins was another one that was like that. Would love to see Mr. Miller join that club. Great teams will always have a couple of those players on the roster. jmho

You need to start a thread titled "who is on your all time UNC "Lunch Bucket" team?" :D

Amen to that.

Sure, sometimes projects don't pan out (Timo Makkenen comes to mind), but more often at UNC they do. And Walker comes in with actual skills, including a perimter shot. Get him to the dinner table and Jonas, and let our staff coach him up and we have a contributor in a year or two. You can't teach 6'10, but you can teach a lotta other things.

Well, wait a minute here... the guys you just mentioned were all (other than Martin) highly recruited players, especially Joe Wolf and Pete Chilcutt who were elite. Only Warren Martin was a project, and a successful one BTW, which would be a good example.
