My key to success in 2018 is QB.

OL will probably only be so-so. Bargas looked great blocking vs Miami at times, hopefully Tucker can get better at blocking, but the OL is going to be young, going to make mistakes, probably won't be good enough for us to rely primarily on rushing (and screen passing or passes to the flats).

So i feel it is imperative that the coaches designate a starter in spring that gets the majority of the reps with the 1's.

Unless you can guarantee that choosing one guy will result in a victory over NCSU, I say rotate them both to the point of helping pick a single starter pre-spring.

I think the issue at qb is the guy who gives us the best chance to win now has the lowest sealing and that is Elliot. He's so much further along in terms of understanding the game, it's like our playbook instantly opened up when he came in and I think it's because he understands it. He has the "IT" factor without an elite arm, speed, or size. Suratt has elite speed and a good arm but the game is moving way to fast for him and he isn't processing it. What I don't understand is our first down play calling seems to always put us in bad spots. We our running the offense as if MT is back there. If we don't commit to the run game and improve upfront our offensive production won't improve.

I think you have hit on something, at least for this group - i think something near the opposite was the case when Williams was around. Now,Fedora has convinced himself that Surratt has all the potential and that Harris has all the experience to balance all the potential that Surratt has. I think Fedora decided which 2 would be his top when he signed Harris.

In the 'spring game,; Elliott, Byrd, and Surratt all looked about the same. There seeming strengths and weaknesses were not the same, but they all looked roughly equal in the whole package. Yet, from that Fedora decided that Harris, with virtually no practice time and a history of SUCK at LSU, would art and Surratt would be #2, and neither Elliott nor Byrd deserved any PT unless the other two were injured.

Why?

The 'why' becomes even bigger when we realize, as we now should, that the offense had to be dumbed down for both Harris and Surratt, and that Elliott rather clearly has a greater grasp of the whole. The offense does not have to be dumbed down for Elliott, certainly not to the same extent.

Anybody can tell himself that a player has more potential. And he can make that prediction come true simply by refusing to play the guy he decides has less potential.

For all I know, or you know, Byrd could be the best all around QB on the team right now and condemned to no PT possible unless the other 3 are injured, because Fedora thinks Surratt has the most potential, and Elliott gets the nod over Byrd because Byrd is a year behind him.

Of the 3 who have played, Elliott is definitely the best now, and Harris is the worst, with no possible upside.

Doesn't really matter. I think Ruder starts next year.

I was high on Surratt at the beginning but he just doesn't have the tools that some of us thought he had. He doesn't have elite speed at all IMO. If you compare him to a playmaker like Kelly Bryant then you realize he's really only slightly above average in athleticism for a college QB. If that. And I'm not shitting you, I bet there are multiple posters on this message board who could throw a football further in the air/with more velocity than Chazz. There's gotta be a few hundred fans in Kenan on any given Saturday who could say the same. Lots of former baseball players out there know this guy has a rag for an arm. Compare the way the ball comes out of his hand to someone like Mason Rudolph or Baker Mayfield and you'll see what I mean.

Ruder isn't even classified as a dual threat QB and I think he's more athletic than Surratt. Plus he obviously has a way bigger arm.

Agree with much of what you say. I just haven't seen enough flashes from Surratt to give me hope for the future. He looked "better than good" in only one game: Louisville. And as we know now, anyone can move the ball at will on Louisville. He has had a few good runs, but in general he seems timid when running. And as you point out, he cannot put a lot of zip on the ball. Good call on Kelly Bryant. He is much more athletic than Surratt and is built better (while being the same age) to withstand hits. Love your posts @NorthTexasLB but I do not see Surratt as having "elite speed" at all.

And yes @uncboy10 Ruder should be listed as a dual-threat QB. He runs track and is quite good at it.

Overall, I agree with the OP, play both for the rest of the season. Elliott needs the reps to possibly keep him at Carolina another year. Chazz needs the planned rotation each game to minimize him taking a beating.

Oh and one more thing, Chazz needs to learn to value the football! A lot of drops and awkward "throws" (fumbles) for little to no reason..

Didn't realize he runs track. I'm really only just starting to get into following recruiting more. Which you kinda have to do when you're a passionate fan but your team suks a$$. Do you know what event/distance he runs?

If he's competitive in track then that means he's got at least a decent amount of fast twitch muscle fibers. Even really well conditioned slow guys can't compete at the HS level.

The biggest question will be how quickly he can learn the playbook. Fed isn't going to give him a shot as a true freshman if he feels like he doesn't have a firm grasp of the offense. Especially with where we're at as a program. We're probably not going to be setting the world on fire next year regardless of who is at QB1. If its going to be another rough year then he might as well take his RS and develop for the future.

Link here for Ruder track info. Dude can fly (for a QB).

And I encourage you to get into football recruiting. To me, it's infinitely more fun to track than basketball (for many reasons I won't get into, unless you're interested).

Also, if y'all can't tell, I've avoided this board like the plague since September, and so have many other good poasters. Why? I can only read so many "bash Fedora" threads. Seriously, it's old. And it's the same 3-5 poasters doing it too. Congrats, you've sucked the life out of this board. The football discussion is 100x better on the premium board.

If you don't like Fedora, by all means, poast about it. But keep it in one thread. The only threads that get continuous action on Blitz are the "Fedora" thread, the "SI hottest names on coaching carousel" thread, both of which are just endless bashing of Fedora.

Yeah I'm with you on that one. I have no idea how people avidly follow basketball recruiting. Especially when the biggest recruits will only be playing college ball for one year.

All this discounts the fact that Chazz had 3 very good games before he and key offensive players got hurt. Look at his numbers the first 3-4 games. They will surprise you.

I don't envy the decision on who to start tonight. In part I want to flood Chazz now in hopes that the light comes on. In part you wanna see if Elliot can execute against a front 4 that should be a little easier to handle than Miami's or VTs.

Good points, but did the playbook really open up that much? We had three trick plays, and there were more qb keepers (designed or not, he was the lead rush attempter) but otherwise I have trouble recalling vastly different plays.

With the number of QB draws we run and the state of our O line, I think all the QBs will get some action for the rest of the year. Don't think Pitt and WCU will be as physical as VT and Miami but State could be.
