Basically, the GOP-controlled NC General Assembly reduced the early voting period from 17 days to 10 as well as reducing the number of early voting sites (goes back to 2013). In July a federal appeals court ruled that the changes affected minorities disproportionately (and that they were intended to do just that), and thus were unconstitutional. So the state's board of elections was forced to restore some early voting periods and sites, but different counties have handled it differently; some have done the bare minimum they think they can get away with. Some only had minimal sites open for the first week of voting (the period affected by the court ruling), such as Guilford County with one polling site for 350k+ registered voters, and only opened additional sites for the last 10 days before the election.

That's my understanding, although I'm sure somebody will chime in to explain how early voting is bad and those changes were totally legit.

Why are minorities more affected by these changes? Seems like everyone is playing by same rules, right?

Early voting is a good thing and as long as everyone has the same rules I have no problem with it. It amazes me that people think minorities are so inept that they can't adjust to new rules and change when and how they vote.

I haven't read the court decision, but I'm guessing it has to do with the racial makeup of the population.

In NC early voting has historically skewed Dem, whether minority or otherwise. So the GOP-controlled legislature tried to make it harder to vote early. It was a pretty blatant partisan ploy. Par for the course for this backwards-ass legislature.

I'm sure it was a partisan ploy, but it wasn't a minority ploy.

I want to thank everyone for the replies . . I had just walked into the house after cutting the front lawn, when I heard something about 16 less polling sites in one county, while there was an increase in polling sites in other counties.
I was like WTF . . ? You got to be kidding me . . !

So, there was only 1 polling site in a county of 350K folks . . ? Is that correct . . ?

You can research that as easily as I can. Have fun.

You just seemed to have some knowledge about how and why the minorities were being screwed. I'm really not all that interested in trying to understand how early voting is now racist, but I'm willing to listen and ask questions if you get on a soapbox.

For the first part of early voting, there was only one site. For the final 10 days, there are multiple sites.

Same in Alamance county.

That pretty much sums it up. It was obviously a political ploy by the GOP, but as always someone has to make it about race.

I'm not sure where you got that from what I posted. Just explained to Billy the facts of what has happened as I understand them. I didn't say minorities were getting screwed; the federal courts did.

So, let me get this correct . . . the number of days were reduced by the NCGOP from 17 to 10, but, that was legally overturned. Then the NCGOP instead decided to reduce the number of hours in those polling sites while having to maintain the number of days.

Same amount of days, but, limiting the hours in which folks could go vote . . ? Is that correct . . ?

Obviously the NC GOP is aware that all of these factors are not in their benefit, or they'd have left it alone to begin with.

This is what makes the most sense to me, what other purpose would there possibly be to make voting less convenient for some folks. Fewer hours mean longer lines, and longer lines would generate more frustration . .

Yes but doesn't everyone experience the same frustrations and inconvenience, regardless of their voting preference?

Because all of the republicans have jobs and can't get off for early voting. The dems can just vote on their way to the welfare office.

(Calm down @chick_bleeds_carolina_blue it was a joke.)

I know but here's your chance to observe a few on this thread about our other discussion. Keep noting what those GOPers say and push versus the others. It's clear as a bell what their mentality is. ;)

Naaaaaah...the weaker minded give in to their frustrations, give up and go home. You know...the Dims.

Sheeeesh.

The Dems are weaker minded . . ?

I keep hearing that Clinton is leading Trump with college educated whites.

Maybe, maybe not. Ask the NC GOP why they wanted the process altered and started the whole controversy. I'm sure they have a perfectly objective, unbiased list of reasons.

I'm sure there is always a frustration of some sort for folks. Waiting in line for hours to vote or having to travel further to do so shouldn't be one of them IMO.

I was talking to my Mom and she told me that in 2012, they waited in line for 2 hours. That was in Prince George County, VA. I never waited anywhere near that long even when I lived in busy areas of Charlotte. In 1996 there a long line, but I guess it was maybe 30-45 minutes, tops.

Wouldn't that be the implication if one assumes longer wait times adversely affect minorities more than whites?

The "sheeesh" was code for "Gimme a break", lol.

I wouldn't want anyone to face longer wait lines to vote . . would you . . ?

I thought THI code for Gimme a break was the accepted GMAFB so frequently seen over on the Mell of a Hess board.

Who do we ask about why early voting became a thing to begin with? We should start with the source, right?

Maybe, but as the saying goes you get more conservative as you age. Age is supposed to bring life experience and wisdom. If that's true then the wiser people are older, so those college educated people mean nothing. ;)

You can always get an old school absentee ballot, right?

I wasn't ever really aware of "early voting" until this election. Maybe they need an election WEEKEND.

I know a lot of older college educated folks . . quite a few are 'Dims' . . . I was just unaware they are referred to as the weaker minded.
