Coronavirus

So 3000 reported cases. Supposedly each person infected passes it on to three people on avg. So you would assume that those 3000 walked around for a week or so at least being contagious. That would indicate they’ve infected about 10,000 who Themselves have probably walked around being contagious for several days. That helps to understand why it’s best to hunker down for a bit.

Man if this doesn’t put things in perspective I don’t know what will.

This is the first time in a very long time that the US and the world at large has been disrupted like this. Makes you realize we take a lot of things for granted.

And, I hope that the precautions are all overreactions, and it would be a good dress rehearsal for ones that are far worse. One thing I have learned from these virologists and "experts" is that viruses are working 24/7 in their mutations. Humans have to stay ahead of them. Walls and barricades do not keep you safe from a virus.

Get rid of those wet market disease factories, too! Shaking hands is not wise for the health of our species. That descended from making another person aware that your weapon-hand was free from weapons and therefore you were not in danger of being stabbed without warning. That's another tradition that is no longer useful.

Heard this yesterday “in the end it will impossible to tell if we overreacted or done too much, but it will be quite apparent if we under reacted or done too little.
I think it will be pretty easy to tell with Italy.

yepp it will be interesting to track and see if it’s accurate that one will infect three. If so we should see that jump significantly in the next week or two before dropping off due to everyone staying home.

one dude just said, two positive in a school more than likely means 12...so closing schools before any positive tests is the right thing to do.

now, about these cruise ships that continue to set sail, what in the hell.

You're going to have a huge jump if for no other reason than people are being tested. Pretty much every expert agrees that the number of cases in the US are significantly higher than reported because people haven't been tested.

@TarHeelMark this is an awesome site and graph. Seems like it is updated pretty frequently. I'm going to use caution in the number of new cases trending down today, I assume by EOD it will be higher than yesterday. But I do think the US from what I've seen, has been pretty smart about quarantine, work from home, social distancing, etc to "flatten the curve". Time will tell I guess.

I do think the international travel restrictions have / will make a signicant difference in how widely and rapidly this virus will spread.

Yes, I keep checking it throughout the day, and assume the daily cases will continue to rise, especially as more people are tested.

So my Sensei who I’ve known and respected for a couple decades has an after school karate program that serves about 80 kids as well as several large adult classes meeting 4 times a week with around 30 ppl each. He just went on a fb rant advising all the parents and adult students to “not let fear win” to “ignore the media hype” “turn off cnn” and come to class and drop off your kids as normal. Several have taken issue with him over the posts and it is ugly. Does seem pretty irresponsible on his part.

I just hope we can take the proper measures needed to NOT be like Italy! That seems like a total disaster. I'd hate to think that we have no other choice but endure what they're going through. I guess we'll see.

The Fed just cut the federal funds rate to zero. In my somewhat educated opinion there is going to be a bloodbath.

Probably not a good move on his part, but I get where he’s coming from to a point. However given that I would imagine marital arts to be a high risk area, he’s just got to stay quiet.

I don't understand WHY it would do that... but, apparently they did.

ETA: Futures are at -1040 at 7:40 EST

Is "blood bath" when it drops like a stone?

And he’s absolutely right. It is better to overreact and possibly save lives than do nothing/react too late and end up like Italy.

there’s a cost associated with everything. The key is whether or not the cost of overreacting is worth it in the end.

same logic also applies to under-reacting. It’s a fine line as to how it is handled.

hypocrisy at its finest: restaurants posting on FB about social distancing procedures ... then posting their menu and business hours in their next post.

I've got a solution for the NCAA tournament. Each school selects a video gamer and they square off over the internet in brackets. I don't think Xbox and PlayStation allow you to play each other so whichever company ponies up to be the sponsor will be the system used. Random seeding because there wouldn't be an accurate way to do true seedings. Games can be streamed for watching. Biggest problem is there isn't an NCAA basketball video game, so either some company would have to rush one out or they'd just have to use the NBA version of the game. The winner wouldn't get to claim an actual NCAA tournament championship, but it would give ESPN something to televise.

I watched Cliff Diving from Italy and some crazy downhill mountain bike thing in Zion National Park over the weekend. Old events, I guess, but some of the lesser known sports might get a boost from the lack of live programming. Bring on the axe throwing championships!

the number of people nationally who have recovered has now surpassed the deaths. and i'm sure many more had CV and have recovered than that number reflects ...just like the number of people carrying it around is much higher due to lack of testing.

I think you're right plus we may have a few deaths from it that have not been recorded as coming from the virus.

The virus is only fatal to a relatively small percentage of the population, so the number of recovered people should always be expected to be higher than the number of fatalities. The more the virus spreads, the wider that gap will grow.

There's a locally-owned group of restaurants in D.C. that is openly defying the mayor's orders to reduce seating and suspend the use of bar seating. She's not even asking for a complete shutdown.

The owner is saying they "will not bow down to pressure from the Mayor’s Office or any group for that matter who covertly is attempting to shut us down." She's about to bring the pain on that fool.

"We all have an obligation to do our part to contain the spread of this global pandemic and get to the business of recovery as soon as possible. Until then, your compliance is required, and we will exercise the full force of our MPD, FEMS, DC Health and ABRA and the emergency authority to achieve it." Oh snap!

It's one thing for the group of owners to defy, but the patrons as well. I think some simply dont care.

People are just ignorant, and self centered. They don’t understand how viruses spread, and think that if they get it then they’ll be fine because they aren’t part of a high risk group. Sadly those people will likely end up spreading it to older family members or friends who are in high risk groups.
