I'm so glad this guy isn't on our team. He is a transcendent talent, but he is not a good teammate. He dominates the ball NBA iso-style, and his teammates, knowing they aren't going to touch it, become disengaged, just standing around. It's no wonder Gott-fired has lost this team. They sold their soul for DSJ, and he gets his 20, but the team as a whole is pure dysfunction.
His me-first attitude, clearly auditioning for the league, is counterproductive to a well meshed team, and it's destroyed ANY semblance of a "team" that existed in rawlee.

I agree that if this kid doesn't see that the team would be much better if he looked to pass first consistently that he's not very gifted in the basketball IQ department.

Cancer may be the wrong word IMO. I think he's a ball hog, but that was part of the deal made to bring him in. Gott promised him that he could get as many shots as he wanted. This is why Roy isn't all about 1 and done type players. He's not going to promise PT or shots.

Its not his fault. Horrible situation. He was prob promised free reign with the offense. If we had him we'd be title favorites. He will be an nba all star.

I agree, I don't put it on DSJ, he is doing what his coach wants him to do, the same thing Got did with Cat last season. It is just a really poor coaching method, it is just to featured player centered. It makes your team become individuals and not a fully bought in team of 5 on the court playing together.

Dennis a great player for ncsu. It would have been nice to se him on a different team, one that values the ball and shares the ball.
As to Wall, there were obvious reasons why we stayed away from him. No need to rehash.

It's not a problem specific to Smith and I don't necessarily blame him. This is the OAD era. I knew it was only a matter of time before this started to happen - people overstating a particular recruit's ability to lead a team to greatness as a freshman. UK did it with their Anthony Davis and duke did it with their Okafor, Jones, Winslow class. But those will prove to be the exception and the Dennis Smith situation will be the rule.

he actually threw several nice passes that should have been finished for assists and they went right through the other players hands or were turned over. seems like he plays hard and competes to me.

Agreed on all counts. Tatum is doing the same thing at dook.

It's an inevitable byproduct of the OAD culture. As long as they're allowed to shine, most couldn't care less about the university they attend for a few months.

In fairness, he did make some nice passes, but he also put too much mustard on the hot dog a couple of times when a simple pass would have been caught. Some of those drops were on him.

He's a monster talent. My problem with him is he stops hustling when things aren't falling right for him.

Smith is one player I am glad did not come to UNC. How many times last night did a state player turn the ball over or almost turn the ball over when Smith passed to them because they were not actually expecting him to pass. The kid has talent, no doubt. His ex high school coach just got busted for embezzlement. I am sure there is more to the story there.

Favorite play last night was when he bricked a three pointer and Nate britt took off for an easy layup. Smith didn't even try to get back.

Yeah, you can't really blame him. The offense is for him to do what he is doing. I would love to have him here. Put him at PG and Berry beside him and that is a pretty ridiculous combination.

It would be a great combo IF he bought into the concept of TEAM, but he doesn't. If he were at UNC, he would be bristling because he couldn't dominate the ball- Roy wouldn't put up with it. He'd get his butt chewed, minutes would decrease if he didn't respond, and then the pouting would begin. Locker room problems would ensue.
The kid will be a stud in the NBA. But like Seahawk said, the other kids fumbled a couple beautiful passes because the ball actually being passed to them was the LAST thing they expected from Smith. Abu could be a force inside, but he was standing around because he knew he wasn't getting the rock.

I don't think that is the case. I think he is playing the way he is because of the team he is on. I think he would fit in fine with Roy's philosophy if he was here. He has very good assist numbers at State even with him being the primary scorer there.

He travels massively, all the time, and continually stops the ball in mid-dribble, takes 2-3 steps with the ball in his hand while deciding which way he wants to go, and then finally puts the ball back on the floor when he sees an opening. And the fudge eating refs stare straight at this nonsense and let it go. It's shameful.

As much as I HATE dook, DSJ picked up his dribble OUTSIDE the 3 point line and hop, skipped, and jumped his way all the way to the hoop for a dunk. That should NEVER go uncalled. Never.

For whatever reason, the refs kiss his ass and send him to the line many times that are not earned, most of them coming after massive travels and/or carries that should have been called first anyway.

I despise his game, and cannot wait for him to leave college basketball.

In other words- coaching

Lol

When he was in the 11th grade and told reporters "I don't play behind [anyone]." I hoped like hell that he didn't land on the Hill.

I'm trying to figure out where your hatred for dook fits in with the rest of the paragraph or even the whole poast. Or did you just throw that one in there for general purposes?

Interesting what's the difference between what smith is doing this year and what barber did last year?

I don't think it's a Dennis Smith issue per se. I don't think he's a cancer. as others have said he was promised the world and all free reign at state if he went there. He's been given that and been good statistically. As such, chemistry and effort has been abysmal bc smith isn't a facilitator and others have become less involved in comparison to years past. It's made state very one dimensional. I think state was a fringe tourney team at very best but by mid year they knew they had little to no hope at the tourney and their effort has completely fell off. This includes Dennis smith. You can see the frustration he plays with. It does however highlight Gotfired's inability to mesh any semblance of talent hence why he lost his job.

It is on the coach to make a guy like Smith, who runs the offense, into a player that makes the entire team better.

Yes.

Like gothedistance said he was promise this free reign role. The same role Barber had last season. I didn't see anyone calling Barber a cancer. I know this isn't what Dennis Smith envision his season would be. However, when you listen to a Coach sell a dream, unlike Coach Roy who tells you the reality this is what you get.

Exactly. So we shouldn't put all these negative stereotypes on Dennis just because he choose NC State and not unc. He doesn't play for a HOF coach like Roy.

Yup. Phenomenal player and I would have loved to have him play at UNC (even for one season). I'd say the same thing about some other hated rival players like Luke Kennard and (gulp) Grayson Allen.

He's all they got at state. It's not surprising he plays the way he does. He's not a cancer at all, just on a poorly coached team with little chemistry. That's not on him.

Wouldn't say he is "all they got" but it is the coaches fault. DSJ would be a star on any team, will be an NBA All Star.

Yeah, I'm not down with Allen. While I don't think he would act that way at UNC (Roy and K are at opposite extremes on this and I don't agree with either of them tbh) he has some issues that are kind of beyond just a coach controlling him. Kennard without a doubt though.

state was playing better earlier in the season but i didn't see enough of them to know whether they were playing as a team or whether the competition was so much weaker.
i don't know whether he's a me first type or whether he feels he has to do everything.

There is a good bit of talent on that team but it has been poorly managed, poorly developed, and poorly pieced together. I would have loved for us to have gotten Anja, I think Abu could have been a real player, and yes DSJ would have been fantastic in our system.

They have NCAAT talent, they do not have even NIT coaching and those kids know it.
