The heart of this storm is lining up to be between Charlottesville, Va and Wash., DC, with projected accumulation totals to a possible 2+ feet for the storm's sweet spot.

I love living at the beach with one exception. The ocean acts as a huge heated rock in the winter. We are always 5-10 degrees warmer in the winter than just a few miles inland. Being as far south as we are that difference is nearly always enough to prevent snow. Numerous times we've had rain and 35 degrees while theres a foot of snow a five min drive away. I've had more than one inch of snow in my yard twice in twenty years.

It seems like you're upset about that? I'd welcome a nice snowless winter with no shoveling.

I grew up in asheville. Typically u get two or three good snows a winter (3+ inches) with a half doz dustings. Just enough to enjoy the snow. I miss that dearly.

Ya know, thats all you need, a 3-4 inch snowfall is enough to enjoy without it being a nuisance event.

In '77 i think it was it snowed the day after christmas in asheville. About a foot. It then proceeded to snow three consecutive weekends without temps ever getting above freezing. It was GLORIOUS! I was 16 with a four wheel drive and no school for a month. We played poker in my basement and pulled people down the street on skis behind our trucks and took long walks at night with my gf listening to the snow hit the ground and the crunch of the snow underfoot. Not a care in the world. God i miss those days sometimes.

Hey when I am breaking my back shoveling out from under 2-3 feet of snow this weekend, I will think of you in Wilmington.

Our local forecast is calling for 1-3" Thursday night, 5-8" on Friday and another 8-12" Friday night and into Saturday morning. I say bring it on. But on Sunday I'd like 60 degrees and sunny please.

I remember that storm well. Snowed every Sunday...we missed a month of school. Had to walk to get groceries...with our sled. It was awesome

School has already been canceled for today. Nothing yet on the ground here but likely in higher elevations

I remember the days when school will cancel or let out early because someone spotted a snow flurry. What I would do to get those days back. Nothing beat waking up in the morning and hearing school was canceled.

And the grocery store sheves would be cleared of all their bread and milk. Wait those days still exist!

Yep, and then since there wasn't actually any snow to go play in, I'd precede to play video games all day until my eyes bled :D:oops:

Huh? When I was a kid, we went to school in the snow. I'm not trying to be all, "I used to walk to school in 3 feet of snow...uphill...both ways". But I distinctly remember snowball fights at school during lunch. People didn't freak out like they do now. Of course we were out when it got real bad. But as a parent now, it's frustrating that schools are so quick to call off school. Last year they called school off on two occasions because of the threat of snow and then it didn't even snow. That's ridiculous. That puts a huge burden on parents.

No it has gotten a LOT LOT softer over the last ten years.Heckl they opened school here two days ago two hours late because it was too COLD.

All these school systems are afraid of being SUED for not treating the little snowflakes with more care and subjecting the dear ones to potential frostbite or that they MIGHT slip or fall on the ice and snow........ it is ABSURD but that is the reality of where we are today

Somewhere out there, I hope Jerry Richardson is reading this.

Where I live in VA, there are all sorts of reports as to the amount of snow we are going to get -- one of them last night, per the GFS model, this storm could become stationary for roughly 12 hours, and our area here would be looking at "30 - 50 inches" of snow (you read that correctly). At minimum, we're looking at 2 feet regardless.

A month ago, my dad and I bought nose-bleed tickets to the NCF Champ Game in Charlotte...refundable if they didn't make it. So...I get to leave my wife and kids during this storm to get to a football game.

So, somewhere out there, I would think this ranks somewhere on the Dedication List. An upgrade to press box seats would be acceptable, Mr Richardson. Thanks in advance.

Agreed. It's quite the predicament for school administrators though. Because I don't know about where you live, but around here, there is such a premium put on getting those free lunches out. Because the more free lunches they give out, the more money they get. So our school administration falls all over themselves to give out those free lunches. Part of the reason I took my kid out of public school was because the school he was going to was designated as a school in our area where there would be 100% free lunches for students. Yep, my kid was going to have to go through the line and be given a a free lunch that he wouldn't eat so it didn't make the kids that were getting free lunch feel bad.

So while they do indeed want to avoid lawsuits from parents of kids that slipped and hurt their little bottoms, them missing a day of handing out free lunches ruins them.

I have a solid 2 inches which will freeze tonight. Roads were pretty slick. Wrecks, cars flipped over, I 26 into TN was such down completely. School let out early and has already been called for tomorrow. I am "french toast" ready. Got the bread, milk and eggs :) Now the power just has to stay on!!

photos below are taken here in WNC today. Doesnt take a lot of snow to mess up someones day

I was in Cullowhee then. We had snow on the ground until April. The Tuck froze solid for the first time in decades. What a winter!!
