Jawad Williams Says Going Outside The Family For Roy's Replacement is a No Go

Stack should be first choice if he does a good job at Vandy. I trust Bubba will make the right call and that probably leaves out Hubert unless others turn us down.

Not sure why Stack should be first. He's never served on a Carolina staff.
Because he's a head coach at a P5 school. If he can turn Vandy into a tournament team and a contender in the SEC, he's the obvious choice.

Not obvious at all. I wish Stack all the best but it's the system that matters.
We'll see, but I think Bubba is smart enough to hire someone with experience. Unless Hubert leaves to become a head coach, I doubt Bubba hires him.

I am against that we HAVE to hire someone from the family if there is an amazing coach available for the taking, but if we do I agree it has to be wes miller as of now.

I bleed Carolina Blue. Luckily, I Didn’t have much of a choice being born to a family of 2 generations of Tar Heels on both sides. That being said, I’d certainly heir on the side of hiring a member of the UNC family if it makes sense. However, there is Not a single member of the unc family coaching right now that has proven to be a big time winner at a power 5. Not a single 1. Save me the Wes Miller talk. I love Wes but he’s still yet to land a major college basketball job at this point. Based on Roy’s age, he better accelerate his trajectory real quick to be a viable option. Also, Hubert is a class act. His family and mine vacation at Litchfield during the summer (not together), and we’ve shared a few conversations through the years on the beach, Enough for me to know he’s a high character guy and somebody that would uphold the integrity of the program, but what was he proven as a coach? Stack May be the closest thing we have at this point and that’s simply because he’s at a power 5 in Vandy, but hasn’t had a chance to show much yet. Time will tell with him. I firmly believe there will be 2-3 external options for the job with major success at the highest level of college basketball that we would be absolutely stupid not to consider in a big way.

Just for shits and giggles, let’s make the following assumption: if 5 years from
Now we are looking for a coach and we have Wes Miller who now coaches at a bottom tier Power 5 and had OK success, enough to keep
His job but not a top 25 program, Hubert still on our bench as an assistant not having been a head coach outside of our JV program, and then Stackhouse still at Vandy with let’s days 2-3 NCAA tournaments under his belt but nothing spectacular, with somebody like Jay Wright, Mark Few, etc open to considering a move, you mean to tell me that no question, we hire Wes, Hubert or Stack? Come on......

I dont think you just fall on the sword just to give the gig to a UNC guy. Unfortunately, the UNC coaching tree isn't the most successful crowd out there right now. So some say it has to be Hubert because he sits next to Roy. But nobody has a clue if Hubert is a head coach, or not. Stackhouse? You hope he is good, but got a long way to go to prove it. Wes Miller? Think he is good, but would like to see him prove it somewhere besides the SoCon. The UNC program is a giant. You don't give the keys to a Ferrari to somebody you hope can drive. And just because they have that UNC connection doesn't mean that any head coaching magic is somehow channeled from their inner Dean Smith. Doherty was a UNC guy. That ended badly. Gut was fine until the talent Dean left in the stable started to leave. You take the best coach you can find and pay him like it. You don't trust this type of program to someone with the only legitimate qualification being a degree from UNC

There are 3 levels:

Top Level:
Roy and Bubba
Roy will be given the respect to recommend who will replace him. I don't think it matters what we think for the first hire. That recommendation will have a lot of weight. Right now that points to Hubert. If Roy wins another NCAA title, Hubert would have two NCAA titles on his resume.

Second Level:
Top Tier Rams Club members and former players input

Third Level:
Fans like us.

Other than Jay Wright, what other college coach has won a national title that does not cheat? Jay would be the only coach I would even think about going after, but only after Hubert is given his shot. Plus, why would someone like Jay leave Villanova when he can make twice as much money at Villanova in a weak conference?

Hubert has proven to be a good recruiter. He was the lead recruiter for Cole Anthony and some other top recruits. He will never get the school in trouble with the NCAA.

My money is on Hubert.

Perhaps Hubert Davis would do well, but hiring someone who has never been a head coach at a Division 1 program to lead the Heels makes me nervous. I would be more comfortable with him succeeding Roy if he became a head coach elsewhere and did well. As for Wes Miller, I am starting to believe he is staying at UNC-Greensboro because he is holding out for the day Roy retires.

How about we get the best guy available regardless of the system?

It’s about the prestige and the legacy of Carolina and who can keep us relevant after 50+ years of Dean and Roy. If that means a different way of playing basketball so be it.
I agree 34. I like our system but I love winning. As long as they can do it clean and at least some pace to it, that’s all that matters to me.

Fair enough.

Being a top 3 program of all time is really all that matters. The main focus should be continuing it. We are extremely fortunate Roy was part of Dean’s coaching tree and became a big success at Kansas. There’s no guy out there as of now like that.

If that’s still the case when Roy retires, don’t fall on the sword to keep it in the family to quote someone a dozen posts up.

The question you have to ask, is how much of what Roy does can be learned by sitting on the bench next to him? Can Hubert recruit like Roy has and teach his system? Can he develop players at the same level? If so, then I'm not all that worried about experience. Being an assistant under Roy for an extended period of time could be more valuable than being a head coach at a small school, if Roy has been teaching him everything with the intention of him taking over when he retires

All that being said, it's pretty hard to argue against taking a guy like Mark Few if he wants to come here. At that point, turning him away because of all the 'family' talk just sounds crazy.

I'm still trying to figure out what Davis has done to inspire confidence in him going from zero/minimal HC experience to being successful at the toughest, most coveted position in College Basketball. Anyone remember what happened last time we tried that? Ironically, the Dean Smith argument would be the only thing that gives him any realistic validity for the job and that sword cuts both ways.

Other than that, who is left? Stackhouse? Miller? maybe Haase? Stack had a barren cupboard, but his first year still wasn't much to write home about and his upcoming recruiting class doesn't inspire much confidence, either. Haase is no rockstar, but he's seems to be slowly improving with each year. Both UAB and Stanford fans seem to love him, but how much of that is environment (west coast, weaker P5 division compared to the ACC). Miller might be the best candidate right now, but until he takes a job at a bigger school(which we really don't know if he just decides to hold out for the UNC gig) we don't know if he's the real deal or a discount Shaka Smart.

Only at UNC do we actively cheer for nepotism over meritocracy. I'm not saying go out and hire some dude off the streets just because he made the final four once in his coaching career or recruit$ really well, but are we really going to pretend a Hubert Davis is better than a Jay Wright or a Mark Few right now? Hire the best guy for the job. Period. If he happens to be of the UNC stock, even better.

Hire the best guy available! Fortunately, understanding the Family culture is one of the most important aspects of being the best so......Hiring the best Family member handles this issue! Nobody has said arbitrarily hire someone just because they are Family so stop with that silly strawman! Doh was a mistake BUT he got hired only because around 7 other guys turned it down or were sent packing by our idiotic AD! Luckily, UNC will never adopt the belief that winning trumps culture so I'm not worried! I also hope Roy will go ahead and give us a quick 10 more!

Good discussion folks.

Hubert played in the NBA for several years and was a successful ESPN commentator. He played with Cole Anthony's father in the NBA and played a significant role in getting Cole to UNC. Comparing Hubert to Gut is not a good comparison.

Roy will have a big say so on who is the next UNC coach. Hubert sitting next to the best college coach for 10 years is not chopped liver.

Roy only has a few more years coaching before he retires. If Hubert wants to Head Coach at UNC, it makes no sense at this juncture to go out and coach at another school. It would not be fair to the school he goes to.

This is the best poast in this thread.

Agree with Jawad 100%. While I think at this point a lot of the past players would help maintain the culture with some outside hires, it could definitely be screwed up by the wrong outside coaching hire.
Let's not forget the Doherty era. It can be screwed up by anybody, regardless of where they played. If the right guy is an "outside" hire, I'm all for it.

Not hiring someone strictly because he's not from the UNC family is the main thing Jawad and a few others on this board have advocated for whenever the Roy's replacement topic comes up. Strawman my ass.

UNC was very fortunate, dare i say blessed, that the guy who happened to be the best for the job was also a UNC alumni and former asst coach. I don't know what happens a couple years down the line, but I wouldn't bank on lightning striking twice.

Contextually, it may not be the best comparison but for nearly 60 years, we've only had to go 7 years without a legendary coach at the position so it's not like there's many more examples to go with here. Even further with McGuire. Perhaps a non-UNC example would be Mike Davis @ Indiana. Regardless, a coach with no HC experience filling Roy's shoes would give anyone else pause.

If serving under Roy/Being closely associated with UNC is the primary factor, then hell, let's just give the job to Steve Robinson. He has more years next to Roy than anyone and i guess HC experience doesn't seem to really matter to some folks. I mean, IDK about y'all, but I'm not getting in a plane with someone just because they sat next to an ace pilot for 10 years.

In all seriousness, let's see some examples of promoting a HC w/ zero HC experience that have worked out well recently. Because for every Brad Stevens, there's probably at least 5 Mike Davis's.

The question you have to ask, is how much of what Roy does can be learned by sitting on the bench next to him? Can Hubert recruit like Roy has and teach his system? Can he develop players at the same level? If so, then I'm not all that worried about experience. I'd say this sums it up the best.

Since he has been back Hubert has dome much all of what Roy did when he worked with Dean. Part of how these processes are handed down.

Hubert is a former player at UNC, National Champion, Dean coached, played over a decade in the NBA, many years at ESPN, and Roy brought him back on staff per his plan. Hubert Davis, Assistant Coach, Brad Frederick, Assistant Coach, Sean May, Director of Operations, Kendall Marshall, Director of Recruiting, Roy had Kendall on staff quick following his graduation.

Those former players on staff (Brad was a KU kid, Dad was AD) are all getting a world class amount of training and preparation to lead the Heels. Roy has spoken highly of both Hubert and Sean and brought Kendall back in to complete and compliment the staff. No better staff in the country, IMO.

Play the game another way, who replaces ferret down the road? Hmm? All his former players on staff were all abject failures in the NBA and look so butt slapping good in their suits on the bench. Capel might work but ferret has no set plan in place, whereas UNC is building for the future.

One person I wish could be in the conversation. Kenny Smith. I think he would be an awesome coach for college and Carolina. But I believe it's Hubert's opportunity. What he does with it time will tell. What we don't want is an outsider who may only stay for a time (perhaps to go back to his alma mater) then we find ourselves with another coaching search and no stability. Honestly if Doh could have checked his ego at the door I believe he could have been a pretty good coach for us but then we wouldn't have Roy. He was a heluva recruiter. Hubert will experience some bumps along the road but I believe he will do well. I think he's being underestimated. I'm sure Kansas had there reservations about Roy having no HC experience only being an assistant. Dean had to push Kansas to give Roy a shot. See how that worked out.
