Jawad Williams Says Going Outside The Family For Roy's Replacement is a No Go

Wasn't Rick Majerus one of the guys Coach Smith was endorsing before Doherty was hired? I may be off but it seem like Coach Smith didn't think Doherty was a good fit at the time and thought that hiring a UNC guy just to hire a UNC guy was not the way to go. I still wonder what type of coach Phil Ford would have been had the off court issues not kept him from real consideration.
Yes, the guy who is responsible for building the program preferred to hire someone outside the family.

If Hubert does get the job... RIP the program for the following decade.
Unfortunately, this is my thought as well. I think he will quickly take the program to mediocrity and if that happens, I just hope the AD and fans will not tolerate a descending program just because he is a nice guy and an alumni. In other words, it should not be allowed to happen for numerous years if things are clearly not working out.

I will be the first to say that I hope to be completely wrong if Hubert is the guy but I just do not see him being the guy to keep this program at the level we expect.

As you’ve seen on a previous post, I think the absolute world of Hubert. He’s a grade A human being in every way. That being said, he’s not ready nor qualified at this point to be the next head coach at UNC.

Yeah, Big Rick was the guy that Dean was strongly pushing after Roy said no. Dean was upset that Baddour would not give larry brown any consideration, Larry let it be known that he was interested and Baddour reply was "send me your resume"? Dean was concerned that Phil's demons may not have been completely handled at that time but make no mistake about this, I strongly believe that Phil was the guy Dean most wanted to be our coach when Gut stepped down, yes even above Roy. And personally, I do think that had phil been able to have the job that he would have himself become a legendary coach if not quite to Dean's level then as close as it could get. The man turned down a heck of an offer from Clemson to be their head coach, why, because he could not bring himself to coach against Dean. That is love and respect there folks!

There is a lot more to the back story on Phil that I promised to never publicly discuss and I will not but if I could it would show everyone why I will always believe Phil as our head coach would have been AMAZING!!!

Yet another thread derailed. Satisfied guys?

Lydia is back, under a new name, as well as the usual suspects.

The Majerus thing was just a stop-gap fall-back after Roy said no. Dean liked Rick and knew he wouldn't stay long. In other words, Majerus would've been a place-holder until the right family member could be hired (ideally Roy) in a couple of years. As for Phil, I think he would've been terrific. He played and coached under Dean, was a great recruiter, knew the system inside and out and was a true believer.

It is going to be tough for anyone to follow Roy. Family or not they need to simply go after the best option. I think many of us would love Stack to succeed at Vandy and be a legit option or for some of the other HCes to really show they can recruit and maybe be viable. Hopefully that is a ways down the road and the answer is obvious when it is necessary.

I just went to the Google button. Brad Stevens is only 43 years old. I think that he has passed Popovich as the best coach in the NBA. I don't think that he will ever return to college coaching, but I think that it's pretty obvious that he would be the first choice of any University if there is a coaching vacancy. Including Duke and UNC.

You are smoking crack. Pop says brad can’t hold his jock until he wins something.

Brad Stevens is so clever that he named his son Brady while he was coaching Butler, before ever moving to Boston

Isn’t it ironic that some of the most abrasive posters are the least tolerant of abrasiveness in others? They can dish it out but they can’t take it.

As usual, you mischaracterize everything.

FTH has given plenty of instances as to why he’s a lowlife. It’s not simply a matter of disagreeing as I do with most people on here.

If you recall Dean was never a head coach before being hired after Frank McGuire left the program and we have seen how that turned out.
Roy was not a head coach when one of the biggest blue blood programs hired him (with the help of Dean) but, Roy earned his chance and did well.
I think the same is being done with Hubert Davis. He is legacy and family bleeds Carolina blue and has seen tutelage from Dean and Roy and many in the Carolina tree.
Wes has Roy and the Carolina family at his disposal as well.
King Rice you could say the same for he played for Dean and one season with Roy and has access to Carolina tree as well.
Hubert is being groomed maybe and we will see if that is the case. Everything points toward it IMO.

Man we have beat this horse to death.

But I find it hard to get on board with a program at the level of UNC hiring an assistant with ZERO HC experience, just because he's in the family.

I don't believe for one second that when Roy hired Hurbert out of a TV booth that he was doing it to groom him to be the HC. That is the stupidest BS I have ever heard.

Why him?
Is it because he is a nice guy?
Is it because he loves Carolina?
Is it because he played basketball?
Is it bacause he was born in the state of NC?
Is it because he is a 2nd generation so to speak UNC player?
Is it because he is African American?

Now Roy or anyone else can answer all of those questions with best answers and valid answers but when I ask the question, whats you coaching resume? We have nothing to base the hire on other than a feeling!

Also don't tell me "what if we would have thought like this when we hired Dean?" That was a different time and that before 50 years of being the premier college basketball program in the country.

Nice article with the facts. Nice read!

The last paragraph sums it up from a historical standpoint. Can Hubert pull another Kevin Ollie if he takes over for Roy? Win a championship within 2-4 years like Ollie? If Hubert gets the job, would Roy leave him with at least 2 NBA players? I think Roy would do that.

Excerpt of last paragraph in article
"If you're picking a coach to win a national championship who hasn't done it before and isn't at least 10 years into running a D-I program, he better be coaching a top-10 basketball institution and it'd really help if he had at least two surefire NBA players on the roster."
