NFL 2016-2017

They talked about it a bunch here on Nashville sports talk today. Apparently it isn't an illegal hit (basically just a cut block), just not something guys generally do away from the ball. Blaine Bishop, who played for the Titans, didn't care for it at all though.

it's a gray area...you're not supposed to go below the waist on the side or behind.

the problem for me is the league created this by eliminating the defenseless hit and the hit to the head.

and talib is not the guy to get a quote from re: dirty play...that dude shot at his own family b/c of sh t on the field.

Now is when I give my annual reminder that Flacco would've been a Tar Heel (as would Russel Wilson) if Bunting wasn't such a colossal ****ing idiot.

Seriously, a whole book could be written on the Mack '97 season and then him leaving --> Torbush (x2) --> Bunting tenure. So many got damn missed opportunities for the Tar Heels. Just over and over. The FSU game, Spurrier, Russel Wilson, just everything.

Bunting didn't pursue Wilson because we already had a QB commitment from Mike Paulus, who was a highly sought after 4-star recruit with offers from Alabama, USC, Miami, Michigan, etc. Cam Sexton and T.J. Yates were also on the roster.

Wilson was only a 2-star recruit according to Rivals and Scout, and his only offers were from dook and Moo. Most programs were concerned about his short stature (which probably wasn't that big a deal to a guy who coached Darian Durant).

If Bunting missed on the kid, so did 120+ other programs. That's kind of a BS way to assess his tenure 10 years after the fact. For all of his faults, recruiting wasn't one of them IMO.

Yeah, Bunting was a decent recruiter, but a horrible coach. Doesn't matter how much talent you have if you don't know how to use it and develop it.

Bunting was not a decent recruiter. He went after kids with high recruiting ranking to inflate class rankings, knowing most of those dudes would never qualify. Even with AFAM.

And the good players he did get in....he squandered their talent most of the time. Just let me have this anti-Bunting rant. That era of UNC Football makes me mad as hell.

bunting appreciated the importance of an in-state rivalry to the fans and the program, something that has been lost at times ever since.

i have two lasting memories of him...first, the game when a photo of him appeared online where he was standing alone, on the field, and nobody was around...he's looking up as if he was the captain of a sinking ship...the other was of course his tv show when he was explaining run fits and the bell tower was bonging in the background and it completely swallowed his voice...the crazy thing is that it was never edited, never re-done, never removed...they left it in as if it was foreshadowing or irony.

Ehh. Duke was probably the worst team in college football every year we played them under Bunting, and it's easier to get up to play State when you're the underdog and/or y'all both suck.

Idk, I can't really give credit to Bunting for anything he did.

who cares how bad duke was, he made sure they were up for the game...the current coach doesn't really treat any game differently and that's a fine philosophy when you're an elite program...in fact, part of me admires that trait, but the cake ingredients need to more than shopped for before i can buy it...and as much as i love butch, he was an nfl guy, every game is the same, therefore i expected his reluctance to acknowledging rivalries.

anyway, who hijacked this thread???...jesus

Exactly. Anyone can relive the crappy Carolina football years that everyone else would rather forget in this thread: https://northcarolina.forums.rivals...lina-football-discussion-thread.40485/page-10

Let's get this thread back to whether any teams will hold a candle to the Pats this year or if Goodell should just hand them the Lombardi trophy now.
I think the Pats are the obvious favorites, the only question is if they take Mitch in the first round. I think that would be a good team for Mitch. That's certainly better than anything that came out of Bunting's tenure at Carolina.

I'd obviously love to see them take Mitch, but I assume he'll be gone before the last pick in the first round. If he's there - great.

I'd be happy with taking Christian McCaffery with our first pick - we could really use an explosive back, but I know Bill would never make that pick. If OJ Howard is there, I'd be fine with that as well - to give us some Gronk insurance as he starts to age. But knowing Belichick he's gonna go defense and will take someone with a 3rd round grade just to try to show he's smarter than everyone else (which turns out great half the time, and is an epic failure half the time).

I'd really like to see the Pats get Switzer at some point in the draft - not sure where his draft grade is, but he'd be perfect in the Welker/Edelman mold in that offense.

lol

cowboys/pats, hope it happens.

Also - how about the league brushing DeflateGate: The Sequel under the rug - with the Steelers under inflated footballs? I guess they learned their lesson the first time how stupid that runaround is.

So, I'm watching my Redskins play our rival Eagles.

And, this was an intense highlight:

So... if Sproles had caught the ball, he would have been in the same place, with a very clean clock. Everett got there a second too soon.

I heard Cris Collinsworth say, later, that the KO and punts should all be fair catch plays.

Fvck the NFL! I tried 5 different youtube video links to allow a view of that hit and they block them all.

Who gives a RH about the tv ratings? I don't want to see either one of those teams win a Super Bowl, so that matchup holds zero interest for me.
It would have some really great storylines:

- Tom Brady, aka GOAT, going for yet another title
- the upstart Cowboys with Dak and Zeke
- the somber figure of Senor Romo sitting on the sideline
- Legaratte Blount's crazy road to get to the Patriots
- Witten finally getting a chance at a title.

I just don't get how y'all can harbor such hatred for professional teams. A Cowboys - Pats Super Bowl would be awesome. The ratings would be stupid high.

Has there ever been a clearer picture of a fair weather (err, "casual") fan?

dude, I've got more years of sports hate for the cowboys than you have on this earth.
As Julez said, I don't want to see either team win a title, just like I wouldn't want to see dook v. kensucky for the natty. If it happens, it looks like I'll miss watching my first super bowl in about 40 years.

I'm guessing the Pats hatred is bitterness from the Super Bowl they beat the Panthers in - aged 13 years. Not really sure where the hatred for the 'Boys comes from. I think Zeke is overrated due to possibly the best OL ever formed, but that team is a good story and Dak has been great - much easier to see succeed than when they were led by Romo.

Coming from someone who was raised a Cowboys fan b/c the Panthers didn't exist until I was 13 years old. Reasons I cannot stand the Cowboys: Cowboys fans.

Don't worry - Seattle is quickly getting into their category of hatred for me for the same reason (including Pete Carrol being nothing but an overhyped cheerleader and R.Wilson being a complete fake). But I digress...

Ya, I haven't crossed paths with many of their fans - so I guess I might be missing what makes them douchey. Our resident fan @gteeitup seems nice enough.

I'm fully on board with the Seahawks analysis though. I don't mind Wilson as much - he's just a dork. But Carroll is a clown, and Dick Sherman is a prick. Their fans are the most annoying in the league, IMO (fact).

You expect some level of bandwagon fans when a team rises to success, but Seattle has been straight ridiculous. The Cowboys thing, for me, is just the amount of hype they receive -- I don't really have anything against them as a team. Case in point -- last season leading up to the Cowboys v. Panthers on Thanksgiving Day...Carolina, being undefeated, was actually considered to be underdogs going into that game against a Dallas team that had won (I believe) two games all year at that point and were bringing back Romo off a broken collarbone. And certain networks were actually making a case for why Dallas was better. That level of bias just drives me insane, and their fanbase largely drives this IMO.

if it were up to me, the storyline would be dak continuing to struggle, replaced by romo...romo wins out and wins the sb vs the team of the decade and a half.

the cowboys move the meter hence nbc flexing these sunday night games...as a fan, i just assume not get the attention.

but if you think cowboys' fans are annoying, try being around eagles and packers...they're like state fans and duke basketball fans.
