NFL 2017-18

I do not get the hate of Tom Brady. I understand the hatred of the Patriots..... but I do not get the hate of Tom Brady at all. Blows my mind in fact.

I told you a lot of it is the way he is kind of a crybaby on the field. He is always whining to officials (often celebrating with them as well apparently). That and the fact he is clearly a winner creates the hate.

See I don't get this communist bullshit that's developed in our society where society hates winners. That's dumb.

Well, let's see. If you want your team to win it all, but they can't because they keep getting beat by f'n Tom Brady, then you're not going to like him very much. It's not really that hard to understand.

For me, I can respect what brady and the pats have done, but I’m just sick and tired of seeing them win so much. If they were my team, then it would be most awesome. Same thing with Alabama in college. They’re good as hell; just tired of ‘em.

As Tar Heel fans, we can relate somewhat. 3 natty’s in the last 13 tourneys is not too shabby. We have a LOT of haters.

I definitely see the connection, and recognize my own biases, but I think the Patriots and Alabama are a little different in deserving a little hate for their respective greatness.

In the NFL the schedules are designed to have the better teams play much harder schedules. After getting through the regular season they still need to play in a best of 12 (or at least best of 8 for the teams that get a bye) tournament to determine a champion. Whereas in college, if you happen to be in a worshiped well respected conference, you can book a couple HS teams in the OOC, and if you get through your regular season with two losses or less, you're in a best of 4 tournament.

Essentially, the NFL is merit based, whereas college is more opinion based as to who's there at the end of the season. I find it harder to hate on merit based than gifted.

Also.... women calling in on Atlanta sports talk radio and saying Tom Brady does nothing for them in terms of his looks. LOL... okay lady. Sure.

Does he do it for you? You know his looks and all.
I would fellate Tom Brady. Then for the rest of my life, whenever his name was mentioned, I could say, “Yeah, I blew Tom Brady.”

Another Super Bowl? “I gave Tom Brady a hummer.”

Fantasy Football draft? “Blew him.”

GOAT discussions on sports radio? I’d call in.

Hall of Fame Induction? “Sucked it.”

The 100s of poasts about him on here? I’d reply to every single one. You’d get tired of hearing about it. Heck, you’re already tired of hearing about it. It would be awesome.

As the President of the Tom Brady fanclub, I'm even getting kind of tired of the Pats' dominance. I'm pulling for them in the SB but I would love for both Brady and Belichick to hang it up after the game. Give some other teams a chance.

Read an article that said his wife wanted him to retire last year. He has stated he wanted to go into his mid 40's.

It's sports, not real life. I don't hate all winners either. Definitely don't hate winners in real life. Plus, I grew up a Dolphins fan, so..... Regardless, like I said, it is partly the whining and special treatment he gets along with the winning. It isn't just one but a combination of it all.

Watch a lot of Canadian football, do ya? Arena league?
No, but I don't understand why everyone is so against the XFL. Where is the downside for the viewer? People keep asking for more football, so now you are going to get it. What are some of the top complaints of NFL fans? They don't like all of the political stuff, they're tired of all of the arrests and the game is too long. He's saying that none of that will exist in the XFL. If he can deliver on that promise and not use crazy rules then it has a chance to succeed. Plus, it sounds like he is going to be smart enough to use non traditional partners to show the games instead of it just being on TV. I'm not saying this thing is going to be as big as the NFL, but it can survive and make some profit along the way.

I completely agree. I mean, I won't watch just because I don't have time in my life to follow another sport or league or whatever. But I think there's a market out there. Vince is smart in that he's going to try to make the games roughly 2 hours long instead of the 3.5 hour games of the NFL. That's genius. I also like that Vince will own all 10 teams. I think that will provide consistency for viewers.

My hope for the XFL is that it's at least marginally successful so that it maybe forces the NFL to make some much needed changes - most notably, cut down significantly on the frequency of reviews which will in turn, shorten the games. And I think it will some guys a chance at the NFL who wouldn't have gotten one before.

I'm not "against" the XFL and there's no downside for the viewer. I just think this:
I can't see it sticking around very long. I just don't think many people will really invest too much of their time into it. Curious people will check it out at the beginning, but it will eventually fizzle out into oblivion...again.

It's certainly no guarantee that it will succeed, but I think it has a far better shot of surviving this time around. He's going to take it more seriously this time and he is addressing the complaints of NFL fans. Also, it sounds like he is going to be approaching non traditional outlets (amazon, Facebook, Netflix, etc) which is a fast growing segment for content and very smart on his part.

BTW, this new XFL won't be the violence/sex experience like the first one. McMahon has said it will be:

- no cheerleaders
- no players signed who have arrest records
- family friendly
- all players required to stand for anthem
- no politics allowed

And he's targeting two hours as the total game time. If he can pull all of that off, then there is a good chance it will be successful.

I think XFL could really, really hit a home run if it borrows from European soccer's promotion/relegation system. By using such a system, they could let virtually any city/town field a team.

Example: XFL could decide its core 10 teams are Boston, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Austin, San Diego, Miami, Denver, San Antonio, L.A. Set those 10 teams as the initial "First Division."

Then, you pretty much have open season and you let lots of other cities/towns join the fray, and formulate a 2nd, 3rd, etc. division. Establish a system where the top 2 or 3 teams from each division move up, and the bottom 2 or 3 move down.

In this fashion, no state or town would be off limits. Raleigh, Memphis, Greensboro, Savannah, Charleston, Tulsa, Lincoln, etc. etc. "second-tier" cities could join the fray and have teams, with the possibility of moving up the ladder if they do well.

I'm not going to debate this with you, but standing for the effing anthem is not political. It's just being a non-piece-of-shit human being.

No one gives af that NFL players are protesting. They care because they're doing it DURING the anthem. If they did it one millisecond before or after the anthem, no one would care. Generally, Americans get pissed when other Americans take a dump on the flag / national anthem.

I'm not going to debate this with you either, but forcing public displays of patriotism is certainly political.

It wasn't "political" until Kaepernick and others started taking a knee during the anthem. No one gave it a second thought.... they just stood for the anthem.

Remember back in the 80s and 90s when it was cool to love America? Sure wish that would come back. Now it's en vogue to hate America. Society is weird.

I don't understand living in a country if you hate it. Move to Norway. No one's stopping you.

I think this is great for the viewer. I was listening to some analysis on this today - and the main problem people had was quality of talent in the league, and that people like to see the best players (who would presumably be in the NFL) and that would be the demise of the product. However, the belief is that the XFL would get people who weren't eligible to play in the NFL. They would wait for players to have breakout freshman seasons in college football - and then go offer them something like $1.5M over two years to forego their soph/jr. seasons in college to go play in the XFL. In extreme cases where a HS recruit was so obviously a can't miss prospect, they would offer him a contract for 3 years until he was eligible to go to the NFL. This would mean the Leonard Fournette's of the world would have their breakout year and then go get paid in the XFL.

It will also give the NFL a push to change the things that suck about it now. With less commercial breaks, and a shorter or no halftime, less/no reviews - they'll cut the total time down a huge amount, which the fans will love and will cause the NFL to adapt finally.

I agree with that, but I don't know that anyone is being forced. I think if people don't want to stand for the anthem they can just wait in the locker room or whatever. That's the politically neutral way to handle it. To make yourself seen and then kneel is absolutely political.

I thought we weren't going to debate this. I mostly agree with you. It'd be great if everybody loved 'Merica and stood for the anthem. Kap and others used it as a form of protest, at which point it became political. Now, at this point, regardless of what things may have been like two or three decades ago, the issue of whether or not someone stands, or more specifically whether someone should be forced to stand, for the national anthem is a political issue.

Therefore saying all players in the XFL will be required to stand for the anthem, and the next line being no politics allowed, is a lulz.
