NFL 2017-18

I think this is great for the viewer. I was listening to some analysis on this today - and the main problem people had was quality of talent in the league, and that people like to see the best players (who would presumably be in the NFL) and that would be the demise of the product. However, the belief is that the XFL would get people who weren't eligible to play in the NFL. They would wait for players to have breakout freshman seasons in college football - and then go offer them something like $1.5M over two years to forego their soph/jr. seasons in college to go play in the XFL. In extreme cases where a HS recruit was so obviously a can't miss prospect, they would offer him a contract for 3 years until he was eligible to go to the NFL. This would mean the Leonard Fournette's of the world would have their breakout year and then go get paid in the XFL.
Hmmmmmmm.... well I don't like the poaching college players aspect of it haha.

But you bring up an argument I've never understood, which I hear people say a lot. Even some of my friends say it. "I want to watch the BEST players play. That's why I always watch NFL and NBA over college football / basketball."

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't subscribe to this view. I want to see the following:
- competitive
- great atmosphere
- fun style of play

I really love the college football game because of the second and third items on my list. The college game is a lot more wide open right now than the NFL. The NFL has turned into a dink and dunk league. It's a lot of underneath routes, hitting the running back in the flat, etc. The college game is wide-open with reverses, deep bombs, end-arounds, high-scoring, etc. etc.

I think if the new XFL can put these teams in small, manageable-size stadiums they can pack (~15,000 capacity), it could make for a really good TV product.

I agree with that, but I don't know that anyone is being forced. I think if people don't want to stand for the anthem they can just wait in the locker room or whatever. That's the politically neutral way to handle it. To make yourself seen and then kneel is absolutely political.
I don't disagree with anyone who agrees with that.

That's an interesting idea. If that were to happen, it would almost be the equivalent of minor league baseball.

Let's talk rule changes you'd like to see in XFL that the NFL doesn't allow. For me:

  1. Make jumping over the line to block a FG or punt legal again
  2. Fix. The. Catch. Rule. Two feet (or one forearm, butt) down + possession. The end.
  3. No booth reviews
  4. Allow the DBs to make much more contact with the WR than the NFL allows
  5. Less restrictive roughing the QB rules.
  6. Call me crazy, but I like the college "when you're down, the play ends" rule. It also makes the catch rule easier to call for college than for NFL.
  7. No extra points. You have to go for 2. Don't half-ass it like the NFL and make it a completely random 37 yard try, or whatever it is.

I think it'd be good for the parody of college football. Now when the Bama's, OSU's, Clemson's, etc. get monster recruits - they'll lose some of them after their freshman year, and then some more after their sophomore year. Barring something unforeseen, the UNC's of the world won't have any players poached.

Roy's style would be perfect for this - as he gets the best players that will stick around 3-4 years. If this actually happens, coaches would need to decide between getting a top 25 recruit that they'll likely only have for a year or two, or taking a 25-100 recruit that they'd have for 3-4 years.

Also interesting is that it may help expose some of the "dirty money" in college football. Sure, there will be the kids who value going to college, don't need the money, love the college coach, etc. But for the ones that it's obvious they're in it for the money - if one of them gets offered say $500K to play a season in the XFL and they turn it down, that would raise questions as to whether they were getting similar payment to stay at the school.

The only one I would disagree with is #6. I don't like it when a blade of grass is responsible for stopping the play.

All good points. This also gives @gunslingerdick another sport to bitch about only wanting recruits who want to stay in school and become neurosurgeons.

We need more plays where the FOOT is involved in a pivotal way... so the name "FOOTball" even applies. American football is actually "Tackle Ball."

This coming from the guy who is stalking the rock band tournament.

It's a thread on the board. It's perfectly normal for me to read and poast comments in the thread.

However, you can't go 5 poasts without mentioning me in some fashion. I'm not mad. I think your crush on me is darlin'.

Isn't mentioning each other and calling each other out most of what we do on this board?

Is it Bizarro Day or something?

It's ok man. You don't have to be embarrassed. Almost everyone I know has a crush on me at some point. Just own it.
I was hoping that your terrible posting year of 2017 was just due to you hoarding likes. I had high hopes that 2018 would be better for you. Unfortunately that hasn't worked out.

Well to be fair. They only traded Fuller and the pick for Smith. Not Cousins.
I'm glad KC is gone.

Washingotn will still suck, but Kirk Cousins was like a less-popular Tony Romo. Washington has an owner/FO issue. Bruce Allen sucks and Snyder has always been in the way. So frustrating to be a Redskins fan and know that you cannot get rid of an owner and the owner is the source of the perpetual under-performance of the team.
