Hmmmmmmm.... well I don't like the poaching college players aspect of it haha.I think this is great for the viewer. I was listening to some analysis on this today - and the main problem people had was quality of talent in the league, and that people like to see the best players (who would presumably be in the NFL) and that would be the demise of the product. However, the belief is that the XFL would get people who weren't eligible to play in the NFL. They would wait for players to have breakout freshman seasons in college football - and then go offer them something like $1.5M over two years to forego their soph/jr. seasons in college to go play in the XFL. In extreme cases where a HS recruit was so obviously a can't miss prospect, they would offer him a contract for 3 years until he was eligible to go to the NFL. This would mean the Leonard Fournette's of the world would have their breakout year and then go get paid in the XFL.
But you bring up an argument I've never understood, which I hear people say a lot. Even some of my friends say it. "I want to watch the BEST players play. That's why I always watch NFL and NBA over college football / basketball."
Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't subscribe to this view. I want to see the following:
- competitive
- great atmosphere
- fun style of play
I really love the college football game because of the second and third items on my list. The college game is a lot more wide open right now than the NFL. The NFL has turned into a dink and dunk league. It's a lot of underneath routes, hitting the running back in the flat, etc. The college game is wide-open with reverses, deep bombs, end-arounds, high-scoring, etc. etc.
I think if the new XFL can put these teams in small, manageable-size stadiums they can pack (~15,000 capacity), it could make for a really good TV product.
