NFL Offseason Thread

Looks like Mitch won't be going to the 49ers. I can't imagine them drafting a QB right after they signed a backup. I still think he goes in the first round, but at this point I have no idea who is going to pick him.

Yeah with all that free agency moves going down, you can't help but gleam that GMs from teams who need QBs are thinking "this year's QB class sucks" OR "this year's QB draft class will take 3-5 years to develop into a starter and I don't have 3-5 years to wait."

That's fine by me, because that most likely means he falls to a team that is in a better position to prepare Mitch to be successful long term. I think he has the talent to be a really good QB, but I don't know if he has enough talent to start from day one. A Rodgers/Favre situation is what I hope happens for him.

Best comment you've made in this thread. The absolute best situation for MT is somewhere he can sit behind an aging veteran and learn the ropes. Example...if he were to get drafted by Pittsburgh, where it's no secret that Big Ben "might" have 2 years left...and he has even hinted at this publicly...that would be a slam dunk for MT.

Agreed, but selfishly I want him to get drafted as high as possible because:

1.) the higher drafted he is, the bigger his guaranteed signing bonus will be
2). the higher drafted he is, the more it's a feather in Fedora's cap that he/we can use in recruiting.

I realize this is an NFL thread and not a Carolina Football thread, but y'all can go ahead and FYITA

True, but if he stays in the first round then he's still going to pick up a nice check.

2). the higher drafted he is, the more it's a feather in Fedora's cap that he/we can use in recruiting.
He can certainly use it, but he hasn't had any issues getting good QBs, so I'm not sure how much it will help. Also, just like in basketball, it's not just about where you are drafted. You have to succeed. If Mitch is drafted and flops that doesn't help Fedora out as much. The style of offense he runs is his biggest asset in recruiting QBs in my opinion.

By the way -- looks like Julius Peppers is signing with the Panthers today. Hope this is Jared Allen, part II...not much left in the tank but can still be productive and make a play in the crucial moment. Good to see him retire a Panther, too.
I have always hoped he would return and finish his career with the Panthers. Is he still expecting a million a game like he was when he left?

They keeping him at LB or moving him back to DE?

My guess is they are building depth at the DE position b/c last year, injuries just killed this group. They were signing guys off the practice squad left and right just trying to create some type of pass rush. Peppers and Johnson are neither "every down" backs anymore, so they should split time this year. They have GOT to get something...anything...out of Kony Ealy.

Sounds like they have made an offer to Captain Munnerlyn as well...hell, might as well try to lure Steve Smith out of retirement too. This is becoming a bit of a homecoming.

my all-time favorite presser was when larry eustachy admitted this...

"And I can’t have two or three beers. I’ve got to have 10 or 12 and when I do that, you see a side of me that is well documented."

some might be too yong to recall, but dude was busted partying with sorority chicks after games and on the road.

not trying to hijack, but what a great quote.

Thomas Davis needs a statue outside BOA Stadium. No one outside of Sam Mills has meant more to this organization.

Gettleman is on a roll. Panthers sign Safety Mike Adams (underrated player...solid signing) to a 2 year deal.

Looks more and more like a RB pick at #8. Welcome to Charlotte, Mr Fournette.

Surprising plot twist...rumors swirling that the hesitation surrounding Tony Romo is that if a trade isn't reached, he may simply retire.

If that is the case.... Houston...HAHAHAHAHA

that would be great for dallas because he'd have to pay back a % of that contract...not as good as a draft pick, but i'd be okay with it.

Money aside...I think it's time. I can't bring myself to feel sorry for him given the fact that he basically lives a life of perfection...lol. But he is IMO the most over-scrutinized, under-appreciated QB of my lifetime. He was a perennial All Pro talent who had to run for his life for all but 2 years of his career in Dallas (the 13-3 season with TO...and a few years ago in the "Dez Caught It" year). It's no wonder his body has given out on him. No shame in just hanging it up at this point.

@Hark_The_Sound_2010

Panthers have traded Kony Ealy and 3rd round pick to New England for their 2nd round pick.

Great move. Hope your guys can get more out of Ealy, but he's been a complete bust in Carolina. He could have even gotten cut in training camp next year IMO.

Wow, didn't see that one coming. I wish him success, but the Patriots can sit on a pin for all I care.

Gettleman really making moves. Hope it pays off.

Ya. Great value at $803K/year for the player for one year. None of it is guaranteed and they can just cut him in training camp themselves if they don't like him. All that for moving down 8 slots in the draft (from pick #64 to pick #72) - seems like no downside with some solid upside potential.

Basically. Shows how much the Panthers value him at this point. Basically gave him away, but at least they get something in return.

It's nice to see Carolina actually doing something this offseason. Shows last year was completely unacceptable.

I like bringing back Peppers and signing Adams. But Matt Kalil has been injury prone for awhile. I'm not sure we should have given him that kind of money.

Not entirely disagreeing but that was the market rate -- an OL was signed before Kalil for $10m per year, which essentially determined what the rest of the left tackles could get. After last year's disaster, I don't think Gettleman could sit back and watch. He had to make a move.

for some reason i feel ealy will breakout there...that's just what the patriots do, good grief.

I thought the same thing about Chad Johnson ("Ochocinco"). Bottom line...Kony was given every chance last year with one of the top defensive coaches in the game and couldn't get it done. It was time.

Y'all wouldn't have successfully signed him if you didn't. That's how free agency works. You knowingly overpay for Player X because you desperately need someone at that position.

i don't disagree with you re: ealy and his lack of production...but ochocinco was pretty done, no?...not to mention the fact that he was ochocinco, or mini-t.o.

Tom Brady got Deion Branch to produce at a high level. I rest my case. ;)

Exactly. That's how auctions (what free agency is) work, by definition. Whoever signs the player overpays him compared to what the other 31 teams value him at (otherwise, another team would have signed him if they valued him more).

^This only works for true free agency obviously, when a player goes to the highest bidder. Not necessarily the case if the player takes a discount to go to a preferred team, or if a player is a RFA.

Ochocinco was washed up by the time he got to the Pats. Martellus Bennett, Randy Moss, and Aqib Talib are better examples of guys who were signed/traded for pennies on the dollar and reinvented themselves in NE.

you can't compare branch, a perennial role player/slot guy, to one of the biggest divas ever to play receiver...i understand your point, but receivers are a different breed.

and as a panthers fan, you know all about that having watched 89.

Yeah I don't think a lot of NFL fans know that that's how UFA works. People are like "why are you paying Glennon that much money?!?" Well, because the other interested teams bid just below the number your team finally had to reach lol.

It's not like the Bears just arbitrarily picked the number $15 million when all other teams were offering $7 million

So, Brandon Cooks for the #32 pick, and sliding back 15 spots from our #103 pick. While keeping Butler and having enough cash to still sign Hightower....

Chess vs checkers.

Basically. Cooks could really be scary good with NE.

I'm just stoked at the moves Carolina made today. Vastly improved their roster today. Added D-Line depth, filled the hole at Nickel, signed their LT (which has been a weak spot for years), replaced speedy Ted Ginn with speedy Charles Johnson (the other one), signed a Safety with multiple pro bowl seasons...
They filled a lot of weak spots from last year.
