NFL Offseason Thread

so the texans are playing coy while cbs has let romo's people know if he wants the booth job for games it's there.

if i'm romo i retire and take the tv job...however, i'm is competitive side is looking for one more shot...dallas must be asking for higher compensation than believed...i thought a 3rd rounder would be sufficient, but maybe a 4th or 5th and a conditional in 2018 if he starts a % of games.

Looks like there is still a chance Mitch gets drafted first overall. I hope not because I think it would ruin his career, but it would be nice to be able to say UNC has a number one pick. Has that ever happened before? If I recall correctly Peppers was our highest pick at #2.

I think if the Browns take Mitch, it will be with their second first round pick. Just been hearing too much about Garrett. But I would love Mitch to go #1 just for the sake of having a #1 pick from UNC, couldn't hurt recruiting.

Apparently there is a chance the 49ers could take him with the second pick, so that might be changing their plans. I always thought that they would take Garrett first and then take a QB with their second pick. That whole plan could change if Mitch is the QB they really want. Would they be ok settling for another QB with the second pick or maybe take a chance he isn't gone when they get their second pick?

As far as recruiting goes it certainly wouldn't hurt recruiting, but I'm not sure how much it will help it. Fedora hasn't really had an issue getting good QB's and with the system we run I don't see that changing in the future.

I could see the Browns drafting him first overall because of San Francisco being right behind them. Trubisky is a really, really good fit for Kyle Shanahan's offense. He can make all the throws and he's got mobility to roll out of the pocket and do all the little things KS likes his QB to do.

I heard a good conversation a couple weeks ago about the reason for taking a QB instead of a DE, even if the DE is considered a "sure thing" like Garrett:

The Rams have had the best defensive line in football for the past few years but haven't sniffed the playoffs. Why? They don't have a QB. A defensive line improves your team, but it only improves it so much. In the NFL, you have to have a franchise QB or you're not winning a Super Bowl or even going far in the playoffs, period.

So yeah, Mitchell might be more of a risk and might be more of a project, but the "sure thing" Garrett won't drastically improve the Browns if they still don't have a star QB.

Peppers, Lawrence Taylor, and Ken Willard are all #2 overall picks from UNC, but yes - we've never had a #1 overall.

While I'd like to see Mitch succeed in the NFL, if he's going to a dumpster fire of a program (CLE, SF, CHI, NYJ, etc.) his career is porked before it begins anyways, and at that point I'd like to see him get the notoriety and the contract/money of a #1 overall pick. I think it would look good for UNC as well, regardless of whether that translates to recruiting or not.

If he can slide down to the Steelers, Saints, or Chargers to learn behind an aging great QB that could work out well for him, or even going to the Texans where they have a solid team except for the QB.

Ya exactly. They probably have a 75% chance of hitting on a DE there, and a 25% chance of hitting on a QB there - which is why the DE is the "safer" thing. Except that hitting on a DE might give you a 5% chance of being franchise altering and setting yourself up for a consistent run of playoff appearances, whereas hitting on a QB would give you a 75% chance of setting yourself up for a consistent run of playoff appearances.

I'm certainly not Nostradamus, but I think y'all are doing a disservice to MT by saying he's doomed if he goes to Cleveland or a few others. Trubisky has nothing to do with those past QB's failures. I'm not saying he will succeed, but he has just a good of chance of succeeding as he does of failing.

As for UNC never having a #1 pick... eh, it's overrated if you don't have one, but cool if you do have one. Julius Pepper has had an incredible pro career as a #2 pick, whereas #1 pick Mario Williams has been meh his whole career. Never lived up to the hype.

Agreed that Trubisky has nothing to do with the past failures, it's just that organizations that are shittily run such as those have a tough time fielding successful teams, even if their QB play is decent.

It's nothing against MT - I don't think anyone would know the name Tom Brady if he had gone to Cleveland.

That's certainly a possibility. Apparently SF is strongly considering taking Mitch at number two, so that could force the Browns hand.

I sort of agree with this statement. Yes, you do have to have at least an above average QB to win in the playoffs. That being said, you have to give the guy some weapons and a line to protect him. You can't just count on the QB. See Luck, Andrew for an example of that.

I'm certainly not Nostradamus, but I think y'all are doing a disservice to MT by saying he's doomed if he goes to Cleveland or a few others. Trubisky has nothing to do with those past QB's failures. That doesn't apply to the Browns. Their problem is they mismanage every aspect of professional football and that spells trouble for any QB. We are talking about a franchise that has gone through 8,543 QB's in the last three quarters of football because they have no clue how to build a team.

The Patriots are with President Trump at the White House today for their Super Bowl visit.

DJT made a point to commend about 10 different players (from special teamers, to the O-line, to Edelman, etc.) by name on specific plays they made to help the team win. He again talked about the support that both Belichick and Robert Kraft gave him on the campaign trail, how they're born winners, and all that jazz.

One very notable omission from Trump on both the players that made key plays in the win, as well as the leaders of the team that were vocal in their support for him during his campaign - was Tom Brady.

I'm guessing that is more than just a mistake of omission, and stems from the fact that Brady bagged out on the visit yesterday citing family issues. Especially when it has been clear from the get-go, that his wife Super G has wanted to distance her and Tom from Trump and has reprimanded him for speaking publicly in favor of Trump in the past. It's assumed she believes that a tie to Trump is bad for her/their brand/s.

I wonder if this will become a big hooplah in the media for a couple days now, or if it will just get brushed under the rug. Either way, it's clear that Trump's message to TB12 is:

The spin I heard was that TB's mom has cancer and they chose to spend one of their few days off to be with her.

I don't buy it, but the public will. This will likely be a non story.

It's true that she has cancer, but I don't buy that as a legit excuse either. He's been traveling around doing various things over the past couple months that he could have easily avoided or pushed back if he was really concerned with getting in an extra day with Mom while she was going through treatment. Not even a full day, he could have flown down in the morning and left in the afternoon.

He was caught in the age-old dilemma of choosing between a friend (Trump) and his wife. And like any smart man - he sided with his wife.

He should check into cushioning.

As possibly the greatest football player of all time at this point, he should be able to tell his woman to STFU and go make a sammich.

Not that this route works for me or anything.

If his mom dies within the next couple weeks, you're gonna be a front runner for the inaugural OOTB Dick of the Year Award.

As much as I would love to win that award, I'm hopeful that she makes it through. I'm sure I can get myself nominated in other ways - I'm quite talented when it comes to being a dick (must be my yankee blood, huh @TarHeelNation11 )

I had to look up this word and holy crap that's dark.
So you're not in? And I heard about the concept from Archer WHICH DIDN'T MAKE THE EFFING ANIMATION BRACKET.

One reason I enjoy it so much is because it's witty AF and has a ton of jokes for the more cerebral portion of the audience.

Well I was the one who suggested an OOTB Death Pool, but winner take all is another degree of sickness.

So you're not going to bring up the story about the Patriots laying the smack down on the NY Times?

regarding the draft next week...i'll probably start a thread for it anyway, but i've watched a lot of breakdowns on players the last six weeks.

i don't think mitch gets drafted first...and if he doesn't go 2nd, i think he will fall all the way to houston or maybe even kc.

also, i'm starting to think corey davis is the best receiver in the draft.

So who should the Panthers draft?

Some are saying Fournette or Howard. Mel Kiper recently said of neither one of those two are available by the time it's our turn to pick we should go with Christian McAffrey.

I heard that too. It Would be an interesting choice since he can play slot, return kicks, punts too.

I'm thinking I'd rather have him or Cook instead of Fournette anyway as they are more versatile. However the Panthers run game is more of a power attack so I would expect them to take LF if he is available.

i rate the 2017 rb's:

cook/mixon
mcaffrey
fournette

the only reason i don't have fournette higher is because he needs three yards to get going and that rarely happens in the league...he's more eddie george than jamal lewis

mcaffrey would be perfect if he had 10 lbs more in the right spots, yanno?

if i'm the panthers i draft corey davis in the 1st and then mixon or kamara, both rb's will be there.
